The sales tax rate in Dodge City, KS is 9.0 percent on most retail purchases. Groceries are the big exception: qualifying food and food ingredients are taxed at 2.5 percent, because Kansas eliminated the state portion on food as of January 1, 2025.
How the 9 Percent Breaks Down
Three taxing authorities each add a slice to every non-exempt sale in Dodge City:
- Kansas state sales tax: 6.5 percent, set by K.S.A. 79-3603 and applied statewide.1Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Code 79-3603 – Retailers Sales Tax Imposed Rate
- Ford County sales tax: 1.0 percent, funding county services across Ford County.
- Dodge City municipal sales tax: 1.5 percent, authorized under K.S.A. 12-187. Voters approved a 0.5 percent increase in November 2022 that took effect April 1, 2023, raising the city’s share from 1.0 to 1.5 percent and the combined rate from 8.5 to 9.0 percent.2Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. On a receipt the three layers usually show up as one line. A $100 taxable purchase comes to $109.00. Some locations sit inside a Community Improvement District and carry a small additional surcharge above 9 percent to finance local projects, so the register total at a few addresses runs a little higher.
Groceries at 2.5 Percent
Kansas completely eliminated the state sales tax on food and food ingredients as of January 1, 2025.4Kansas Office of the Governor. Governor Kelly Announces Food Sales Tax Completely Eliminated Local taxes still apply, so qualifying grocery items in Dodge City are taxed at 2.5 percent — the Ford County and city shares combined — instead of the full 9 percent.
The exemption covers food and food ingredients broadly, and your receipt will usually show two tax rates: one for qualifying food and one for everything else. Prepared meals, alcohol, and dietary supplements generally do not qualify for the reduced rate and stay at 9 percent.
What the Full 9 Percent Applies To
Kansas casts a wide net. The 9 percent rate covers tangible personal property sold at retail: clothing, electronics, furniture, appliances, and household goods. It also reaches admissions to entertainment, sporting events, and movies; equipment rentals and leases; and labor charges for installing, repairing, or maintaining tangible personal property, depending on the specific work.5Kansas Department of Revenue. Residential Utilities
Residential electricity and gas have an unusual split. The 6.5 percent state portion is exempt for noncommercial home use, but local sales tax still applies, so Dodge City home electric and gas bills carry 2.5 percent rather than 9 percent.6Kansas Department of Revenue. Hotels and Short-Term Lodging
Visitors pay the standard 9 percent sales tax on hotel and short-term rental stays, plus a separate transient guest tax of 8 percent.8Kansas Department of Revenue. Common Exemptions
Several categories of purchases avoid the 9 percent rate entirely:
- Resale inventory. Businesses buying goods to resell don’t pay sales tax if they present a valid Kansas resale exemption certificate (Form ST-28A) at purchase.9Kansas Department of Revenue. Kansas Form ST-28A Resale Exemption Certificate
- Prescription drugs. Medications dispensed under a prescription are exempt statewide.10Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Code 79-3606 – Property and Services Exempt From Tax
- Farm machinery and equipment. Agricultural machinery, repair parts, and maintenance services qualify, including precision farming equipment like GPS systems and yield monitors. Passenger vehicles and standard trucks do not.10Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Code 79-3606 – Property and Services Exempt From Tax
- Manufacturing machinery used as an integral part of an integrated production operation.10Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Code 79-3606 – Property and Services Exempt From Tax
- Nonprofit organizations holding a valid exempt status letter from the Kansas Department of Revenue. Public schools, religious organizations, and qualifying youth groups commonly use these.6Kansas Department of Revenue. Exemption Certificates Pub KS-1520
Kansas does not hold an annual sales tax holiday for back-to-school or emergency supplies, so these exemptions are the main ways to avoid tax on qualifying purchases throughout the year.
Online Purchases
If you buy something online and the retailer doesn’t collect Kansas sales tax, you owe what Kansas calls a compensating use tax at the same combined rate: 9 percent for Dodge City residents. The use tax applies whenever you buy tangible personal property from an out-of-state seller and the transaction would have been taxable had it occurred in Kansas.11Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes. Kansas Code 79-3703 – Compensating Tax Imposed
Most large online retailers already collect Kansas sales tax because the state requires any remote seller with at least $100,000 in cumulative gross receipts from Kansas customers to register and collect. Kansas uses a revenue-only standard with no separate transaction count threshold. Smaller out-of-state sellers may not collect, and when they don’t, the legal obligation to pay falls on the buyer.
