Does Blue Shield of California Cover Dental? Plans, Costs, Medicare

Blue Shield of California does cover dental, but for most adults it is not built into a medical plan. Children under 19 get pediatric dental automatically inside any Blue Shield individual or family medical plan. Everyone else buys a standalone Blue Shield dental plan, either a PPO or an HMO, and can do so directly from the insurer year-round.1Blue Shield of California. Dental Plans

Dental Coverage for Children Under 19

Pediatric dental benefits are embedded in every Blue Shield individual and family medical plan, including plans purchased through Covered California. Preventive and diagnostic services are free, and fillings, root canals, and crowns are cost-shared between the plan and the family.2Blue Shield of California. Pediatric Dental and Vision3Covered California. Children’s Dental

Out-of-pocket costs for pediatric dental are capped at $350 for one child and $700 for two or more children per year.3Covered California. Children’s Dental Which dental network the child uses depends on the parent’s medical plan. Families on a medical PPO use the Dental PPO network with the medical ID card. Families on a Trio HMO medical plan get a separate dental ID card and may use the Dental HMO or Dental PPO network depending on their metal tier.2Blue Shield of California. When a dependent turns 19, this embedded coverage ends. They will need their own standalone dental plan going forward.2Blue Shield of California. Pediatric Dental and Vision

Standalone Dental Plans: PPO or HMO

Adults who want Blue Shield dental buy a separate policy. There are two structures, and they behave very differently.

Dental PPO

A PPO gives you a large network and the option to see out-of-network dentists at a higher cost. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs are higher than an HMO. Plans carry a calendar-year deductible, typically $50 per person, and an annual benefit maximum of $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the tier. Once you hit that maximum, you pay 100% of anything else that year.1Blue Shield of California. Dental Plans4Blue Shield of California. Family Dental PPO Summary of Benefits

Cleanings, exams, and X-rays cost $0 and do not eat into the annual maximum. Basic services like fillings and extractions carry set copayments or coinsurance; major services like crowns and implants cost more. On the Dental PPO 1500 plan, for example, a molar root canal runs $234 with a participating dentist and a crown runs $160 to $320 depending on material.5Blue Shield of California. Dental PPO 1500 Summary of Benefits If you see a non-participating dentist, Blue Shield pays up to its allowable amount and you owe the balance plus your share.6Blue Shield of California. Enhanced PPO tiers push the annual maximum to $2,000 and use percentage coinsurance: 20% for basic services and 50% for major services with a participating dentist. Dental HMO

An HMO costs less each month but restricts you to in-network dentists. You pick a primary care dentist who handles referrals to specialists, and if you go outside the network you pay the entire bill yourself.10Blue Shield of California. Dental HMO Plan Information6Blue Shield of California. Your Dental Plan

HMO plans have no deductible and no annual maximum, so the plan keeps paying its share no matter how much dental work you need in a year. You pay flat copayments per service: roughly $15 to $29 for fillings, $155 to $290 for a root canal depending on the tooth, and $300 for a porcelain crown.1Blue Shield of California. What Blue Shield Dental Actually Covers

Across both plan types, the covered categories are similar; the cost-sharing is what varies.

  • Preventive and diagnostic care, including two cleanings a year, exams, X-rays, fluoride, and sealants, at no cost on all plans.1Blue Shield of California. Dental Plans
  • Basic services such as fillings, simple extractions, periodontal scaling, and oral surgery, with HMO copays or PPO coinsurance of 20% to 50%.5Blue Shield of California. Dental PPO 1500 Summary of Benefits

Common exclusions apply across the plans. Cosmetic work such as whitening and veneers is out, and so is TMJ treatment. Congenital conditions, including orthognathic surgery and cleft palate treatment, are not covered. Wisdom tooth removal is excluded unless medically necessary for specific conditions such as horizontal impaction or cystic involvement. Crowns, bridges, and dentures cannot be replaced within five years, and experimental procedures are not covered.15Blue Shield of California. Family Dental Plan Disclosure

Waiting Periods You Should Know About

Many Blue Shield dental plans delay coverage for anything beyond preventive care. Basic services generally wait three to six months, and major services wait six to twelve months, depending on the plan.1Blue Shield of California. Dental Plans

If you had comprehensive dental coverage that ended within 60 days of your Blue Shield effective date, you can get the waiting period waived by calling customer service at (888) 271-4880. Some PPO plan versions are sold explicitly “without waiting periods” and skip the delay entirely.16Blue Shield of California. Broker Dental Plans17Blue Shield of California. Member Documents
