Does Bright Futures Cover Housing or Just Tuition?

Does Bright Futures cover housing? Not directly. Florida’s Bright Futures Scholarship pays tuition and mandatory fees only, with no line item for dorms, rent, or meal plans.1Florida Senate. Florida Code 1009.534 – Florida Academic Scholars Award The one way the scholarship ends up paying for housing is indirect: if your other aid already covers tuition, Bright Futures creates a credit on your account that the school refunds to you, and you can spend that refund on housing or anything else.

How a Bright Futures Refund Can Pay Your Rent

Your school applies Bright Futures to your outstanding tuition and fee balance first. If scholarships, grants, or a prepaid plan have already paid part or all of that balance, the Bright Futures money has nowhere to go on the tuition line, so it sits on your account as a credit. The school then sends that credit to you through its standard refund method, usually direct deposit or a mailed check. Once the money reaches your account, it is yours to spend on rent, a dorm payment, groceries, textbooks, or anything else.

Refunds generally go out after the drop/add period ends, because the school waits to confirm your enrollment and credit hours before disbursing scholarship funds.2UF Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. 2025 Fall Disbursements Timing varies by institution, so ask your financial aid office for its specific disbursement schedule if you are counting on the refund to cover a rent payment early in the semester.

When a Refund Is Likely, and When It Isn’t

Whether you see a refund at all depends on two things: how much your Bright Futures award is worth, and how much of your tuition is already paid from another source. The scholarship has four tiers, and each pays a different share of your bill.

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) is the top tier and covers 100 percent of tuition and applicable fees at eligible Florida public institutions, including activity, health, athletic, financial aid, capital improvement, transportation, technology, and tuition differential fees.1Florida Senate. Florida Code 1009.534 – Florida Academic Scholars Award Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) covers 75 percent of the same tuition and fees.3Florida Senate. Florida Code 1009.535 – Florida Medallion Scholars Award Gold Seal Vocational and Gold Seal CAPE Scholars receive a flat per-credit-hour amount set by the annual state budget, which for 2025–26 ranges from $39 to $48 per semester credit hour depending on the program.4Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. Bright Futures Student Handbook – Chapter 2 At eligible private institutions, FAS recipients receive $212 per semester credit hour at four-year schools and $105 at two-year schools for 2025–26, with FMS at $159 per credit hour at four-year private colleges.5Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. Bright Futures Private Institution Award Amounts

A full-time FAS student whose tuition is also covered by a Pell Grant or an institutional scholarship can see a meaningful refund every semester. An FMS student with no other aid may find that the 75 percent award just covers part of tuition, leaving nothing to refund. Gold Seal recipients, who get smaller flat amounts, are the least likely to generate a surplus unless they are also receiving other aid. The math is simple: a refund only exists when the money coming in exceeds the tuition and fees going out.

Pairing Bright Futures With Florida Prepaid

The clearest path to a housing-usable refund is holding both a Florida Prepaid College Plan and a Bright Futures award. In most cases, the university bills Florida Prepaid first for tuition. Bright Futures is then applied to any remaining mandatory charges, and whatever is left of the Bright Futures award becomes a credit the school deposits to the student’s bank account for housing and other living expenses.6Florida Prepaid College Board. The Prepaid plan account owner can also request a scholarship refund each semester, which pays out the same amount the plan would have sent to the school. Both Prepaid and Bright Futures funds can be used during summer terms as well.

Summer Housing

Bright Futures is available during summer terms for FAS and FMS recipients, which gives you another term where a potential refund can help offset housing costs. You must be enrolled in at least six non-remedial credit hours to receive funding for any term, including summer, unless you have fewer than six hours left in your degree or fewer than six funded hours remaining on your scholarship.4Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. Bright Futures Student Handbook – Chapter 2 Taking summer classes does draw down your lifetime funded hours, so weigh the housing benefit against that cap.

What Can Cost You the Refund

If you lose the scholarship, you also lose the refund that pays your rent. Two renewal rules trip students up most often.

First, your GPA and credit hours. FAS recipients must maintain a cumulative college GPA of at least 3.0, and FMS recipients must maintain at least a 2.75.7Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. Initial Eligibility Requirements for Florida Academic Scholars and Florida Medallion Scholars You also have to earn at least as many credit hours as you were funded for during the academic year. A full-time student funded in fall and spring needs to finish the year with at least 24 credit hours.

Second, dropped courses. If you drop or withdraw from a course after the drop/add period ends, you must reimburse your school for the Bright Futures funds that paid for those credits. The scholarship will not renew the following year until you repay or set up a repayment arrangement. Once you repay, those hours are added back to your remaining funded hours, and students who withdrew because of a verifiable illness or emergency can appeal to have the repayment requirement waived.4Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. FAS and FMS funding is capped at 120 semester hours toward a first bachelor’s degree, with a five-year time limit from high school graduation; longer programs can apply for an extended-hours exception. Gold Seal funding caps at 72 semester hours for associate degrees and certificate programs, or 60 hours for applied technology diplomas.4Florida Student Scholarship and Grant Programs. Bright Futures Student Handbook – Chapter 2 Running out of funded hours ends the refund stream too.

Bright Futures will not write you a check for housing, and it will not pay your landlord. But stacked with other aid, especially a Prepaid plan, it often leaves a credit on your student account that the school refunds in cash. That refund is the real answer to the housing question, and keeping it means keeping the scholarship: hit the GPA floor, earn the credits you were funded for, and think twice before dropping a class after the add/drop deadline.
