Does Davidson County Still Require Emissions Testing?

Davidson County emissions testing is no longer required. The Metro Council voted unanimously to end the program, and the last day of required testing was February 5, 2022.1Nashville.gov. Davidson County Vehicle Inspection Program If you’re registering a car or renewing your plates, you can go straight to the county clerk or renew online. No test, no certificate, no visit to an inspection station.

How to Renew Your Registration Now

Without the emissions step, renewal in Davidson County is straightforward. You don’t need to bring a passing result or any inspection paperwork. Tennessee gives you several options:2TN.gov. Renewals

  • Online at tncountyclerk.com, selecting Davidson County from the dropdown.
  • At a self-service kiosk, located throughout the county.
  • Through the Auto Assistant phone app.
  • By mail, sending payment and your renewal notice to the Davidson County Clerk.
  • In person at the county clerk’s office with your renewal notice or current registration.

Davidson County also collects a $55 annual wheel tax on passenger vehicles as part of your renewal. That’s separate from the state registration fee and goes to local government.

No Safety Inspection Either

Tennessee doesn’t require annual safety inspections on standard passenger vehicles. The state’s safety inspection law covers only commercial vehicles over 10,001 pounds gross weight and vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers. For a regular car, SUV, or light truck, nothing needs to be inspected before you register or renew in Davidson County.

Why the Program Ended

The end of testing traces back to a 2018 amendment to the Tennessee Air Quality Act, which barred vehicle inspection and maintenance programs in the state 120 days after EPA approved a revised state implementation plan.3Justia. Tennessee Code 68-201-119 – Rules Regarding Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program EPA published its approval on August 17, 2021, which ended testing in most affected counties on January 14, 2022.4Federal Register. Davidson County held on longer under a local carve-out, then voted in January 2022 to shut the program down. A 30-day wind-down for the testing contractor took it to the February 5 end date. No Tennessee county currently requires emissions testing.

Your Federal Emissions Warranty Still Applies

Even without a county test, your car’s emissions equipment is still covered by two federal warranties the manufacturer has to honor nationwide:5US EPA. Frequent Questions Related to Transportation, Air Pollution, and Climate Change

  • A general emissions warranty covering repairs tied to defective emissions parts for 2 years or 24,000 miles from original sale, whichever comes first.
  • A major components warranty covering the catalytic converter, the electronic emissions control unit, and the onboard diagnostics computer for 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The 8-year coverage is the one that tends to matter. A catalytic converter replacement can run over $1,000, so if your vehicle is within the age and mileage limits and the converter fails, the manufacturer has to cover it. Aftermarket work on the car doesn’t void the coverage on its own; if the dealer wants to deny the claim on that basis, the burden is on the dealer to show the aftermarket part caused the failure.
