Whether Florida Blue covers eye exams depends on which plan you have. Routine adult eye exams are not included in standard individual medical plans like BlueOptions and require a separate vision plan called BlueVision. Children’s eye exams are covered at no charge on marketplace plans because federal law requires it. Most Florida Blue Medicare Advantage plans include a routine eye exam at a $0 copay.
Adults on Individual and Marketplace Plans
If you’re an adult on a standard Florida Blue individual plan, a routine eye exam is not a covered benefit. The Summary of Benefits and Coverage for BlueOptions lists “Routine eye care (Adult)” among the services the plan does not cover.1Florida Blue. Vision coverage is typically sold as a separate plan rather than bundled into medical coverage.2Florida Blue. Children’s Eye Exams
Pediatric vision care is treated differently. Under the Affordable Care Act, every Health Insurance Marketplace plan has to cover pediatric services, including vision, as one of ten essential health benefits.4HealthCare.gov. What Marketplace Plans Cover5CMS. Essential Health Benefits
On BlueOptions, that works out to one children’s eye exam every 12 months at no charge, plus one pair of children’s glasses every 12 months at no charge. Additional costs may apply for frames outside the plan’s selection.1Florida Blue. BlueOptions Summary of Benefits and Coverage
