In California, auto insurance covers windshield replacement only if you carry comprehensive coverage, which is optional under state law. If you have it, your insurer pays for the replacement after you cover your deductible. For small chips and cracks that can be repaired rather than replaced, most insurers waive the deductible and cover the fix at no cost to you.
Comprehensive Coverage Is the Deciding Factor
California’s minimum auto policy is 30/60/15 liability: $30,000 in bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 in property damage.1Insurance Geek. California Auto Insurance Liability pays for damage you cause to other people and their property. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle, including your windshield.

One thing to clear up: California is not a zero-deductible state for auto glass. Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina require insurers to waive the deductible on windshield claims, and Arizona extends that to all vehicle glass.4Policygenius. Repair or Replacement Changes What You Pay
A chip or crack can usually be repaired if it’s shorter than about six inches, doesn’t reach the edge of the glass, and isn’t directly in the driver’s line of sight. Larger damage, damage at the edge, or damage in the line of vision generally calls for a full replacement.6California Casualty. Windshield Repair or Replacement
Insurers treat the two very differently. For repairs, many carriers waive the deductible entirely. ADAS Recalibration
Many newer vehicles mount cameras and sensors on or near the windshield to run features like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. When the glass is replaced, those systems have to be recalibrated so they aim correctly. Recalibration typically adds $300 to $600 to the replacement, more on luxury vehicles with complex sensor arrays.12Abel Diagnostic Centers. ADAS Calibration After Windshield Replacement
Most comprehensive policies and glass coverage plans pay for recalibration as part of the replacement claim, and major insurers generally require the step.12Abel Diagnostic Centers. The Full Glass Endorsement Option
Some insurers offer an add-on, often called “full glass coverage” or a “glass endorsement,” that waives the deductible on windshield replacement. It’s separate from standard comprehensive and typically costs a few dollars a month.14The Hartford. Auto Glass Insurance Progressive, for instance, offers a $0 deductible option for glass-only replacement claims in some states.2Progressive. In California, almost certainly not. Proposition 103 prohibits insurers from surcharging policyholders for incidents where they were not at fault.15Consumer Watchdog. Driving on a Cracked Windshield Is Its Own Issue
Even if the cost of a replacement is debatable, driving on badly damaged glass is not. California Vehicle Code § 26710 makes it unlawful to drive on a highway with a windshield in such poor condition that it impairs the driver’s vision. An officer who sees a badly cracked windshield can issue a “fix-it ticket,” directing you to bring the glass into compliance within 48 hours.26FindLaw. California Vehicle Code § 26710
