Yes. Ohio accepts a federal extension for individuals automatically, with no separate state form to file. If the IRS gives you until October 15, 2026 to file, Ohio honors that same date for your IT 1040 and, if you owe it, your SD 100 school district return. One thing the extension does not do: push back your payment. Any Ohio tax you owe is still due April 15, 2026, and interest starts running the next day on whatever is unpaid.
How the Automatic Extension Works
Ohio Administrative Code Rule 5703-7-05 provides that a taxpayer who receives a federal filing extension automatically receives an identical extension for the corresponding Ohio return, as long as the federal extended deadline falls after Ohio’s original due date.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Rule 5703-7-05 Income Tax Extensions Penalties and Interest The authority for that rule comes from Ohio Revised Code Section 5747.08(G), which lets the tax commissioner extend filing periods.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. In practice, Ohio has no state extension request form at all. The state looks only at whether the IRS granted you an extension. For tax year 2025, that moves the Ohio deadline from April 15, 2026 to October 15, 2026.3Ohio Department of Taxation. Individual Filing Season Tips The same extended date applies to the SD 100 if you live in a taxing school district.4Ohio Department of Taxation. Any valid method of obtaining the federal extension works for Ohio. That includes e-filing IRS Form 4868, mailing a paper Form 4868, or simply making an electronic payment to the IRS and designating it as an extension payment. The IRS treats that electronic payment as the extension itself; no paper 4868 is required.5Internal Revenue Service. Your Payment Is Still Due April 15
This is where the extension catches people. More time to file is not more time to pay. Ohio requires all tax to be paid by the original April 15 deadline, and interest accrues on anything unpaid after that.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Rule 5703-7-05 Income Tax Extensions Penalties and Interest The rule works the same way for school district tax.
For 2026, the Ohio interest rate is 7% per year, or roughly 0.58% per month.6Ohio Department of Taxation. Annual Certified Interest Rates On a $2,000 balance left unpaid from April 15 to October 15, that is about $70 in interest. Not catastrophic, but entirely avoidable if you pay by the original deadline.
You can pay electronically through Ohio’s online tax portal, or by mailing a check with the Ohio Universal Payment Coupon (OUPC), which has replaced the older IT 40P and several other payment vouchers.7Ohio Department of Taxation. Electronic Payments Reference the correct tax year and your Social Security number so the payment is credited to the right account. Make checks payable to the Ohio Treasurer of State.
Getting the extension still matters even if you cannot pay in full. Without a valid extension, Ohio can assess a late filing penalty of the greater of $50 or 5% of the tax due for each month the return is late, capped at $500 or 50% of the tax, and that penalty applies even if you were owed a refund.8Ohio Department of Taxation. Ohio Individual Income Tax Failure to File Notice A valid federal extension removes that exposure.
What to Do When You File the Extended Return
Two steps show Ohio that your extension was valid. First, check the box at the top of the IT 1040 marking you as a federal extension filer. Second, attach a copy of your IRS extension, your IRS acknowledgment, or your electronic confirmation number.9Ohio Department of Taxation. Instructions for Filing Original and Amended Individual Income Tax IT 1040 School District Income Tax SD 100 Tax Year 2025 If you also file an SD 100, check the equivalent box and include the same documentation.
Keep your e-file acknowledgment number or your mailed Form 4868 copy somewhere you can find it. Ohio cross-references extension claims against federal records, and a mismatch can cause the state to treat your return as late. Confirm that your name and Social Security number appear exactly the same way on the federal extension and the Ohio return.
Special Situations
Living Abroad on April 15
If you are an Ohio resident outside the country on April 15, the IRS automatically gives you until June 15 to file and pay. Filing Form 4868 by June 15 can then push the federal deadline to October 15.5Internal Revenue Service. Military Service in a Combat Zone
Service members in combat zones get an automatic federal extension lasting the entire period of service plus 180 days after leaving the zone, with no interest or penalties during that window. The relief also covers the service member’s spouse.10Internal Revenue Service. Extension of Deadlines Combat Zone Service Because Ohio’s extension follows the federal one, the same treatment carries over to the Ohio return.
Federal Disaster Declarations
When the IRS postpones deadlines for a federally declared disaster area, those postponements can flow through to Ohio. The IRS, for instance, extended deadlines for Louisiana taxpayers affected by winter storms in early 2026.11Internal Revenue Service. When a Federal Extension Fails
If the IRS rejects your electronic Form 4868, usually for a mismatched Social Security number, misspelled name, or duplicate filing, you have no valid federal extension and Ohio will not recognize one either.12Internal Revenue Service. Age Name SSN Rejects Errors Correction Procedures Rejection notices for mailed extensions go out by letter, which can take time to arrive.13Internal Revenue Service. Confirm that you actually received an electronic acknowledgment after e-filing. No acknowledgment means the submission may not have gone through. Taxpayers who assume an early-April extension was accepted sometimes find out months later that Ohio is treating the return as late because the federal extension never cleared. Thirty seconds of verification is cheap insurance.
