What’s Not Covered
Some common procedures sit outside the benefit. Bridges are generally excluded; the plan covers removable dentures instead. Dental implants are not covered except in rare trauma or cancer-surgery situations, and those cases require extensive prior authorization. Adult orthodontic treatment is not available regardless of medical necessity. Cosmetic work such as tooth whitening and veneers is also excluded.5Brevy. Tennessee Medicaid Dental Coverage

Services That Need Prior Approval
Coverage is limited to care that is medically necessary, meaning it must be recommended by a licensed provider, required for a diagnosed condition, safe and effective, and the least costly appropriate option.8KidCentral TN. Renaissance, the dental benefits manager, applies specific clinical criteria. A crown requires a tooth with extensive structural loss that a filling can’t restore. A denture requires that existing dentures are no longer serviceable, and any untreated disease must be addressed first. A root canal requires a tooth that is restorable with an acceptable prognosis.9Renaissance Benefits.
