Does UPMC For You Cover Weight Loss Medication?

UPMC For You does not cover weight loss medication in the GLP-1 class for adults. As of January 1, 2026, Pennsylvania Medicaid, including UPMC For You, no longer pays for drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound when they are prescribed to treat overweight or obesity in anyone 21 or older.1Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Medical Assistance Bulletin – GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Coverage Some non-GLP-1 obesity drugs are still covered, GLP-1s remain available for certain other medical conditions, and members under 21 are judged by a different standard.

GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Are Excluded for Adults

Any drug containing a GLP-1 receptor agonist is off the benefit when prescribed for overweight or obesity in adults. That includes Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide). Saxenda (liraglutide) was dropped further and is no longer covered for any indication at all.1Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Medical Assistance Bulletin – GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Coverage The rule applies across Pennsylvania Medical Assistance, so switching managed care plans will not change the answer.

Non-GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs That Are Still Covered

Obesity medications that do not contain a GLP-1 remain a covered benefit. Drugs listed as “preferred” on the Pennsylvania Statewide Preferred Drug List can be filled without prior authorization, provided quantity and daily dose limits are respected. Phentermine capsules and phentermine tablets are specifically named as preferred agents.1Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Medical Assistance Bulletin – GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Coverage Non-preferred obesity drugs that already had an active prior authorization in place before January 1, 2026, were not disturbed and continue in effect.

When GLP-1s Are Still Covered

A GLP-1 can still be filled through UPMC For You if it is prescribed for a qualifying condition other than weight loss. The approved indications and the maximum length of each authorization are:

  • Type 2 diabetes, up to 12 months.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea in patients with obesity, up to 6 months.
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction in people with overweight or obesity, up to 6 months.
  • MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis), up to 6 months.1Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. Medical Assistance Bulletin – GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Coverage

Every GLP-1 prescription now needs a fresh prior authorization. Any approval that existed before January 1, 2026, was voided, so patients taking a GLP-1 for diabetes or another covered condition had to have their prescriber submit a new request to avoid a gap at the pharmacy.2Pennsylvania Health Law Project. Members Under Age 21

The adult exclusion does not apply to children and young adults. Federal law requires Medicaid to cover any medically necessary treatment for people under 21 through the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment program, so UPMC For You cannot categorically refuse a GLP-1 for weight loss in this age group. The plan must look at each young patient individually and decide whether the drug is medically necessary.2Pennsylvania Health Law Project. What To Do if a Prescription Is Denied

If UPMC For You denies a GLP-1 that was prescribed for a qualifying non-weight-loss condition, or denies a GLP-1 for a member under 21, you can file a grievance directly with the plan. If you request the appeal within 15 days of the date on the denial letter, your coverage should continue while the grievance is pending.2Pennsylvania Health Law Project. After the plan issues a final adverse benefit determination, you have four months to request a free external review through the Pennsylvania Insurance Department. External review is limited to denials based on medical necessity or appropriateness of care. Services that the plan excludes by design are not eligible for external review,4Pennsylvania Department of Insurance. Request a Review if Your Health Insurance Denied a Treatment, Medication, or Service which is the practical reason an adult cannot use this route to get a GLP-1 covered for weight loss.
