Who Still Qualifies After July 1, 2026

CVS Caremark’s prior authorization criteria for Wegovy are specific. For weight management, you must have a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related comorbid condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. You also need to have participated in a comprehensive weight management program involving behavioral modification, diet, and physical activity for at least six months before starting the drug.4CVS Caremark. To renew authorization, you must have completed at least three months at a stable maintenance dose and either lost 5% from your baseline weight or maintained an initial 5% loss. Wegovy can also be approved for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults aged 45 or older with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI above 27, provided the patient does not have type 2 diabetes. What You Pay Without Coverage
Patients who lose GLP-1 coverage face out-of-pocket costs of up to $450 per month.5WBUR. Mass. How to Appeal a Wegovy Denial
If CVS Caremark denies prior authorization for Wegovy, you can appeal. Why Coverage Is Ending
The GIC board voted 10–7 on February 26, 2026 to drop GLP-1 coverage for weight loss, following a directive from Governor Maura Healey to find roughly $120 million in savings on health care costs driven in large part by these drugs. GIC Director of Health Policy and Analytics Margaret Anshutz said 22,000 members were taking GLP-1 drugs for weight loss at a total cost of $46 million. GIC Executive Director Matt Veno acknowledged the change would be “substantially disruptive” and said the agency was exploring transition options for affected members.2WBUR. The Massachusetts Teachers Association and other public employee unions have organized a campaign to restore coverage, and Novo Nordisk, which manufactures Wegovy, called the decision “irresponsible.”7Massachusetts Teachers Association. Switching Insurers Won’t Fix It
Most major Massachusetts insurers have made the same move. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts stopped covering Wegovy, Saxenda, and Zepbound for weight loss on January 1, 2026, after reporting more than $300 million in GLP-1 spending in 2024.8WBUR.
