A DORA license renewal in Colorado runs through the Division of Professions and Occupations online portal, opens about four to five weeks before your expiration date, and takes roughly ten minutes if your continuing education records and payment method are ready.1Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations. When the Renewal Window Opens
The window opens roughly four to five weeks before your license expires.3Divisions of Professions and Occupations. Colorado Nursing Applications and Forms Until then, the “Renew” link simply doesn’t appear next to your license in the portal. DORA emails a reminder to the address on file when the window opens, which is why keeping your contact information current matters more than most licensees realize. Change email providers and forget to update DPO? You won’t get the notice.
Expiration dates vary by profession. Real estate brokers run on a three-year cycle; other credentials renew every one or two years. Your date is printed on your current license and shown on your portal dashboard.
What to Have Ready Before You Log In
Pull these together before you start:
- Your DPO Online Services username and password. If you’ve forgotten either, use the recovery links on the login page before renewal day so you aren’t fighting the system on a deadline.
- Your continuing education records, if your board requires CE. You almost certainly won’t upload them — most boards use an attestation model where you certify compliance — but you need them accessible for a possible audit.
- Honest answers to the disclosure questions. The portal will ask about criminal convictions, out-of-state disciplinary actions, and changes to your legal standing since your last renewal. Inaccurate answers can lead to denial or formal discipline.
- A credit card or electronic check for the renewal fee. Fees are set by each board and change periodically, so check your board’s page on the DPO site for the current amount.
Renewing Through the Portal
Log in to DPO Online Services. Your dashboard lists every license you hold with its current status and expiration date. When the window is open, a “Renew” link appears next to the eligible license. The flow walks you through verifying your personal information, answering the disclosure questions, attesting to continuing education compliance if applicable, reviewing everything, and paying.
The payment screen takes major credit cards and electronic checks. Once it processes, the system generates a receipt with a tracking number tied to your account. Save it. If anything goes sideways with the database update, that receipt is your proof you renewed on time. Let the confirmation screen load fully before you close the browser; interrupting the process can leave the renewal in an incomplete state that takes a phone call to fix.
Updated licenses are printable from the portal within one business day of final approval through the “Print Your License” option. A wallet card or wall certificate is available for a fee through DORA’s vendor, NASBA.4Divisions of Professions and Occupations. Colorado DPO Print Your License
Continuing Education and the Audit Risk
Whether CE is required at all depends on your profession. Real estate brokers owe 24 hours per three-year cycle.5Division of Real Estate. Broker Continuing Education CPAs owe 80 hours per reporting period.6Divisions of Professions and Occupations. Colorado Accountancy CPE Licensed professional counselors owe 40 professional development hours per license period, prorated at 1.66 hours per month if your initial license came partway through the cycle.7Divisions of Professions and Occupations. Colorado Professional Counselor CPC Colorado does not currently require CE for RN or LPN renewal.
Your board’s page spells out exactly what’s required, including approved providers and any mandatory topics. Because the portal only asks you to attest, not upload, it’s easy to be casual about record-keeping. Don’t. Boards run random audits, and if you can’t produce documentation when they ask, your license is at risk.8Legal Information Institute. Colorado Code 3 CCR 712-1.7 – License Renewal Procedures
Missing the Deadline: The 60-Day Grace Period
If your expiration date passes without a renewal, Colorado law gives you 60 days to renew without being disciplined for practicing on an expired credential.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement You still use the normal online renewal, but you owe a delinquency fee on top of the standard renewal fee. The delinquency amount is set by your specific board under C.R.S. § 12-20-105 and varies by profession.
The protection is real but narrow. During those 60 days you won’t be sanctioned solely because the license had technically expired. After day 60, the license lapses, you become ineligible to practice, and the regulator can impose discipline if it finds you kept working.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement
Reinstatement After the Grace Period
Once the 60 days pass, renewal is no longer an option. You have to submit a reinstatement application, which is more involved and more expensive.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement The requirements scale with how long you’ve been expired.
If the license has been expired less than two years, you submit the reinstatement application, pay all applicable renewal and reinstatement fees, and meet your board’s current requirements. If the board discovers you practiced during that lapse, it can discipline you on top of those fees.
If the license has been expired more than two years, you also have to demonstrate current competency to practice. What that looks like depends on the board: proof of active practice in another state, additional continuing education, or in some cases retaking the licensing exam.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement The longer you wait, the harder reinstatement gets. Treat the 60-day grace period as a hard deadline, not a soft one.
Military, Veteran, and Military-Spouse Exceptions
Colorado law carves out two separate protections for people connected to military service. If your license lapsed while you were on active duty, the regulator is required to reinstate it as long as you meet the basic application requirements. The rule covers active-duty personnel, National Guard members, and reservists on active duty for at least 30 days, as well as veterans who were not dishonorably discharged.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement
Military spouses, gold star military spouses, and military dependents get a different track. If you hold an active, good-standing license from another state, Colorado will issue you a license on application with proof of that out-of-state credential, without additional testing or a waiting period. The application fee is waived, and the license runs six years rather than the standard cycle.2Justia. Colorado Code 12-20-202 – Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations – Renewal – Reinstatement Colorado regulators are also required to count military education, training, and service toward the qualifications for any license, with the specific documentation determined by each board.
