The Standard Fine and How to Get It Dismissed
Utah law prohibits operating any vehicle on a public road unless it’s properly registered.3Utah Legislature. Here’s the part most people miss. The fine schedule allows the citation to be dismissed entirely if two things are true: the officer wrote the ticket within two months of the registration’s expiration date, and you renew within 14 days of getting cited.1Utah State Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule Renewing the same week you’re pulled over is the single best move you can make.
Expired registration is also a non-moving violation, so it’s generally not reported to the Driver License Division.6Utah State Courts. Traffic Offenses A single ticket, on its own, won’t add points to your driving record.
For an infraction, you can usually pay the fine without a court appearance. Utah lets defendants remit the fine for any Class B misdemeanor or lower through the uniform schedule.7Utah Legislature. Paying the fine counts as a conviction, treated the same as a no contest plea. If a court date is assigned and you skip it, a judge can issue a bench warrant.8Utah Legislature. When the Car Gets Impounded
A briefly expired registration will not get your car towed on the spot. Utah law only authorizes officers to seize a vehicle without a warrant when one of three things is true: the registration has been expired for more than three months, the current owner has never registered it, or the registration has been suspended or revoked.9Utah Legislature. If your tags expired last month, expect a citation and an order to fix it. If they expired six months ago, the car may leave on a flatbed. Once it’s impounded, you’re responsible for all towing and storage fees before the lot will release it.10Utah Legislature. Those bills add up quickly, especially when you also need cash for the renewal itself. You’ll have to show proof of current registration before the lot lets the vehicle go.
When It Stops Being a Simple Infraction
The $50 ticket covers a garden-variety expired registration. Several related situations carry real criminal charges instead.
New Residents Who Skip Registering
If you establish residency in Utah and don’t register your vehicle within 60 days, you face a Class C misdemeanor under a separate statute, with a $1,000 minimum fine. Registering the vehicle after you’ve been caught does not make the charge disappear. A court can reduce the fine to $200 if you show the vehicle is now registered and the violation lasted less than a year, but the conviction stands.2Utah Legislature. Plate and Sticker Games
Displaying plates or a sticker that belong to a different vehicle, making a fake plate, or failing to return plates that have been cancelled or revoked are Class C misdemeanors under their own statute, with fines up to $750.12Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-1a-1305 – License Plate and Registration Card Violations — Class C Misdemeanor It doesn’t matter whether you swapped plates from another car you own or borrowed a friend’s tags to skip renewal.
Fake or Altered Documents
Counterfeiting a registration sticker or altering registration paperwork can bring much harsher charges. Tampering with records, which includes falsifying any record with intent to deceive, is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine up to $1,000.13Utah Legislature. Renewing Before It Gets Worse
If your registration expired recently, you can renew online through Utah’s RenewalExpress system with your VIN and PIN. Online renewal opens 60 days before expiration and closes once the registration has been expired for more than six months. Several counties require emissions testing before renewal. Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, and Cache counties impose Air Pollution Control fees and generally require vehicles to pass emissions as a condition of renewal.16Utah Division of Motor Vehicles. Registration Taxes and Fees If the vehicle fails, the DMV will not process the renewal and the car stays illegal to drive until the emissions issue is fixed. If you’ve been cited and need to legally drive the vehicle to get it inspected, Utah offers a 30-day temporary operating permit for $6 plus any applicable renewal fees.18Utah.gov. Temporary Permits You can request one online if the registration has expired or will expire within seven days. It gives you cover to get to an emissions station without collecting another ticket.
Come back to the dismissal window. If the citation was written within two months of expiration and you renew within 14 days of the citation, the court may throw the charge out.1Utah State Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule That two-week clock is the reason to act now instead of next month.
What the Traffic Stop Looks Like
Officers can pull you over if they see an expired plate sticker or if a database check flags the vehicle. When you’re signaled to stop, you’re legally required not to flee. Utah treats willfully disregarding an officer’s signal as a separate and far more serious offense than whatever prompted the stop.19Utah Legislature. The officer will ask for your license, proof of insurance, and registration. Utah law says owners are “encouraged” to carry the registration card in the vehicle rather than requiring it outright.20Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-1a-214 – Registration Card to Be Exhibited Officers can verify registration electronically, so leaving the card at home is a smaller problem than having no valid registration at all. If the tags look altered or don’t match the vehicle, the stop will escalate quickly toward the misdemeanor-level charges above.
The DMV sends renewal notices as a courtesy, but the legal duty to renew on time belongs to the owner whether that notice ever shows up.3Utah Legislature.
