Dryer Vent Code in California: Length, Termination, and Permits

The dryer vent code in California is set by Section 504 of the California Mechanical Code, Part 4 of Title 24, which requires a rigid metal exhaust duct of 4-inch nominal diameter running no more than 35 equivalent feet to an outside termination fitted with a backdraft damper.{1Cornell Law School. Duct Material and Diameter

The main exhaust run has to be rigid metal with a smooth interior. Nominal diameter is 4 inches, and the metal must be at least 0.016 inches thick, roughly 28-gauge. Galvanized steel and aluminum are the usual choices.

Plastic, vinyl, and other non-metal flexible materials are prohibited for the main run. A white vinyl hose running from the dryer to the wall does not meet California code and needs to be replaced.

The 35-Foot Length Rule and How Elbows Count

The maximum allowable length is 35 feet, measured from the transition duct connection to the outside termination. Every fitting eats into that limit:

  • A 45-degree elbow subtracts 2.5 feet.
  • A 90-degree elbow subtracts 5 feet.

A run with two 90-degree elbows leaves an effective 25 feet of straight duct. Three 90s drops it to 20. Many installations fail inspection because the installer measured only the physical duct and skipped the fitting math.

If the dryer manufacturer’s instructions specify a different limit and the code official approves them, those instructions govern. When the manufacturer’s number is more restrictive than 35 feet, the manufacturer’s number controls.

Where the duct is concealed behind drywall or inside a chase, a permanent label must be placed within 6 feet of the duct connection identifying the total equivalent length of the installed system. That label lets a future technician verify the system still meets code if the dryer is swapped for one with different specifications.

Booster Fans for Runs Over 35 Feet

When the building layout makes a compliant 35-foot run impossible, the code permits an exhaust duct power ventilator, or booster fan, to extend the allowable distance. The fan must be listed and labeled for dryer exhaust. Products certified under UL 705 are designed for this use and can support runs of up to 125 equivalent feet depending on the model. The Flexible Transition Duct

The transition duct is the short connector between the dryer and the rigid duct in the wall. Code allows it, with limits. It must be a single unbroken length, listed and labeled to UL 2158A, and no longer than 8 feet.{3UpCodes. Transition Duct} It cannot be concealed inside a wall, floor, or ceiling.

Flexible duct crushes easily when a dryer gets shoved against a wall, and the kinks that result trap lint and choke airflow. A recessed dryer outlet box set into the wall behind the dryer gives the transition duct room to make its connection without sharp bends.

Where the Duct Terminates

Every dryer exhaust duct has to terminate on the outside of the building with a backdraft damper at the exit. Screens or mesh at the termination are prohibited because they clog with lint, restrict airflow, and create the fire hazard the exhaust system is meant to prevent.

Minimum clearances at the termination point:

  • 3 feet from any opening into the building, including windows, doors, and soffit vents.
  • 3 feet from a property line.
  • 10 feet from any forced-air intake.

On the tight lots common in California’s urban neighborhoods, the 3-foot property-line setback often decides which wall the vent can exit through.

Support, Fasteners, and Joints

Ducts must be supported at intervals of no more than 4 feet and secured to prevent sagging. Joints should be oriented so the downstream section fits into the upstream section in the direction of airflow, and connections at wall or ceiling penetrations must be sealed with noncombustible material, approved fire caulking, or a noncombustible dryer exhaust duct wall receptacle.{4UpCodes. Sheet metal screws and other fasteners that protrude into the interior of the duct are not allowed. Even a small screw tip snags lint, and those snag points build into blockages. Use metal foil tape instead of cloth duct tape to seal joints. Slope the duct slightly downward toward the termination so condensation drains out rather than pooling.

Fire-Rated Walls and Ceilings

Where the duct passes through a fire-rated wall, floor, or ceiling, it must be galvanized steel or aluminum at the code-specified thickness, and the fire-resistance rating of the assembly must be maintained with approved firestop materials at the penetration.

Fire dampers, combination fire and smoke dampers, and similar devices that would obstruct exhaust flow are prohibited inside dryer ducts. A damper that closed during a fire would trap lint-laden air in a duct that is itself a fire risk, so the code relies on the duct material’s own fire resistance instead.

Permits for Dryer Vent Work

A mechanical permit is generally required in California whenever a mechanical system is installed, altered, or replaced, unless the work falls under a specific exemption.{5Santa Cruz County. Straight component replacement without a design change may be exempt, but exemptions vary by jurisdiction.

Skipping the permit carries real consequences. Permit fees for residential mechanical work vary by jurisdiction but are generally modest. The value in the process is the inspection: the building inspector verifies duct length, materials, termination clearances, and support during a permitted installation. Without that check, violations can sit behind drywall for years.
