What to Have Ready Before You Call
If you’re calling about an existing case, keep your Social Security number or DTA Agency ID handy, along with any notice you’ve received from DTA. The notice usually spells out exactly what the agency needs from you and gives you a reference the case manager can look up quickly.
If you’re calling to apply, DTA will eventually ask for documentation to verify your household. You don’t need everything in hand to start, but having these ready shortens the back-and-forth:
- A government-issued photo ID for the primary applicant.
- Social Security numbers for every household member applying.
- Recent pay stubs (typically the last four weeks) and documentation of any other income such as Social Security, child support, or unemployment.
- Your lease or mortgage statement and recent utility bills. Housing and utility costs factor into deductions that can raise your benefit.
- Receipts for child care costs and, for elderly or disabled household members, out-of-pocket medical expenses. These deductions are easy to miss.
DTA has 30 days to process a standard SNAP application.5Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Application Processing Timeliness Households with very low income or almost no cash on hand may qualify for expedited processing within seven days.3Mass.gov. Faster Alternatives to Calling
Phone hold times at DTA can run long, especially around the first of the month. Two routes often work better.
DTA Connect is the agency’s online portal and mobile app. You can apply for benefits, upload documents, check your case status, complete interim reports and recertifications, and view your EBT balance without talking to anyone. The web portal is at dtaconnect.eohhs.mass.gov, and the app is available on both major phone platforms. Uploaded documents land in the system immediately, which beats waiting for mail delivery or fax processing.
Mail to the Document Processing Center. If you can’t fax or upload, mail paperwork to the DTA Document Processing Center at PO Box 4406, Taunton, MA 02780-0420. This is the centralized scanning hub for the entire state, and documents sent here get digitized and attached to your case faster than paper dropped at a local office.6Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance. For a lost or stolen EBT card, skip the DTA lines entirely and call EBT Customer Service at (800) 997-2555, which runs 24/7 and will deactivate the card right away so no one else can spend your benefits.
