What to Have Ready Before You Call
Have your cause number in front of you. Without it, staff often can’t pull your file quickly, and you may get bounced between departments trying to find the right court. If you don’t know your cause number, look it up first on Indiana’s free case search at mycase.in.gov; Elkhart County records are included.6Indiana Judicial Branch. Elkhart County
Each judge has distinct local rules and scheduling procedures, so reaching the correct courtroom matters. If you’re not sure which court your case is assigned to, Clerk’s staff at the main number can look it up for you. Write your questions down before you call. A focused call gets better answers than an open-ended one.
If you’re requesting certified copies of court documents, such as a divorce decree, have the case number ready too. Indiana law caps the fee for copies of court records at $1 per page.7Indiana Supreme Court. Indiana Trial Court Fee Manual
When You Don’t Need to Call
For basic case information, skip the phone. The mycase.in.gov portal is free and lets you search by party name, case number, or attorney name, and it includes some court documents as well.6Indiana Judicial Branch. Elkhart County
Attorneys must file documents electronically through Indiana’s e-filing system at courts.in.gov/efile. Self-represented parties are encouraged to e-file but can still file on paper at the Clerk’s window.6Indiana Judicial Branch. Elkhart County
