Elko County tax rates for fiscal year 2025–2026 come down to two numbers for most residents: a combined sales and use tax of roughly 7.1 percent on taxable goods, and property tax rates that range from about $2.58 to $3.66 per $100 of assessed valuation depending on which city or district the property sits in. Property is assessed at 35 percent of taxable value, and annual increases on your tax bill are capped by state law.
Sales and Use Tax
Every taxable retail purchase in Elko County carries a combined rate of about 7.1 percent. That figure is built from Nevada’s 6.85 percent statewide minimum (state sales tax, local school support tax, and two city-county relief taxes under NRS 372, 374, and 377) plus a local option levy of roughly 0.25 percent added by Elko County.1Nevada Department of Taxation. Components of Sales and Use Tax Rates The same rate applies in Elko, Carlin, Wells, West Wendover, and the unincorporated parts of the county.
Not everything you buy is taxed. Groceries purchased for home consumption, prescription medicine, and prosthetic devices are exempt under NRS 372 and NRS 374.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes Prepared food, restaurant meals, and most other retail purchases are fully taxable.
If you buy something from an out-of-state seller who doesn’t collect Nevada tax, including most online purchases, you owe use tax at the same combined rate. You can file through the state’s “My Nevada Tax” portal or mail a Consumer Use Tax Return to the Nevada Department of Taxation.3Nevada Department of Taxation. Consumer Use Tax Return
Property Tax Rates by City and District
Property tax rates are expressed as a dollar amount per $100 of assessed valuation and are certified each year by the Nevada Department of Taxation. For fiscal year 2025–2026, the rates across Elko County are:4Nevada Department of Taxation. Property Tax Rates for Nevada Local Governments Fiscal Year 2025-2026

The incorporated cities add their own municipal levy on top for services such as roads, parks, and emergency response. Unincorporated areas pay less because they receive fewer municipal services, though they still include the county fire protection district levy.
How Your Property Tax Bill Is Figured
The county assessor first determines the taxable value of your property, accounting for the land value and the replacement cost of improvements minus depreciation. The tax rate is then applied not to that taxable value but to the assessed value, which by statute equals exactly 35 percent of taxable value.5Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 361.225 – Rate of Assessment
In practice: if the assessor values your home at $300,000, the assessed value is $105,000. At the City of Elko rate of 3.6600, the gross tax before any abatement comes out to roughly $3,843. The tax cap described next limits how much of that figure actually shows up on your bill year to year.
The 3 Percent and 8 Percent Tax Caps
Nevada law ceilings the annual increase in your property tax bill no matter how fast values climb. If the property is your primary residence, your bill cannot rise by more than 3 percent over the prior year’s bill. The Legislature treated anything above that as a severe economic hardship on homeowners and built a partial abatement to prevent it.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 361 – NRS 361.4723
All other property, including rentals, commercial buildings, vacation homes, and vacant land, falls under a higher cap of 8 percent. The actual cap under NRS 361.4722 is the lesser of 8 percent or a formula tied to the ten-year average change in assessed values across the county, so in some years owners get a lower figure.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 361.4722 – Partial Abatement of Taxes
The caps apply to the total tax bill, not to the assessed value. Your assessed value can jump 15 percent and your bill still rises only by 3 or 8 percent. The abatement is automatic for most properties, but owners claiming the 3 percent cap on a primary residence may need to confirm residency with the assessor.
Exemptions That Lower the Bill
Nevada offers several property tax exemptions that reduce the assessed value subject to tax. The base statutory amounts are adjusted annually for inflation from a July 2003 baseline.
Veterans
Any honorably discharged veteran qualifies for an exemption under NRS 361.090. The base amount is $2,000 of assessed value, which comes to approximately $3,540 after CPI adjustments for 2025–2026.8Nevada Department of Taxation. Veterans Exemptions FAQs
Veterans with a permanent service-connected disability receive a larger exemption under NRS 361.091, scaled to the degree of disability. Approximate inflation-adjusted figures for 2025–2026:
- 100 percent disabled: about $35,400 of assessed value
- 80 to 99 percent disabled: about $26,550
- 60 to 79 percent disabled: about $17,700
Blind Residents and Surviving Spouses
Legally blind residents qualify for an exemption worth approximately $5,310 in assessed valuation for 2025–2026, roughly $189 in annual tax savings. Surviving spouses of eligible individuals may qualify for an exemption on a base of $1,000 in assessed valuation, also adjusted for inflation. These exemptions are reduced to the extent the applicant already receives an exemption from the governmental services tax on vehicle registration. Applications must be filed with the county assessor by June 15 for the following fiscal year.

If You Pay Late
You get a 10-day grace period after each installment date. Miss that window and penalties under NRS 361.483 stack as more installments go unpaid:11Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Title 32 Revenue and Taxation 361.483
- One installment delinquent: 4 percent penalty on the amount owed
- Two installments delinquent: an additional 5 percent on both
- Three installments delinquent: an additional 6 percent on all three
- All four installments delinquent: an additional 7 percent on the full year’s taxes
Mobile and manufactured homes carry a flat 10 percent penalty on the delinquent amount instead.
Prolonged delinquency puts the property itself at risk. Under NRS 361.570, the county treasurer receives a trustee’s certificate for each property with unpaid taxes, penalties, and costs, and then holds the property in trust for two years from the first Monday in June of the year the certificate is issued. During that window, you can redeem by paying everything owed plus 10 percent annual interest assessed monthly.12Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 361 – Property Tax After the redemption period runs, the county deeds the property into trust for the state and county and can sell it. Even in the final 90 days before sale, paying all accrued amounts still reclaims the property.
Challenging Your Assessment
If you think the assessor overvalued your property, you can appeal to the county board of equalization. Appeals of values on the secured roll must be filed by the board’s annual deadline; appeals of denied exemption claims must be filed by January 15.13Nevada Department of Taxation. State Board of Equalization Appeal Deadlines
The burden of proof is on you. You have to show that the assessor’s taxable value is incorrect or exceeds full cash value. Request a written copy of the information the assessor used, including comparable sales and the appraisal methodology; the assessor must provide it within 15 days for a nominal copying fee. If the county board rules against you, you can escalate to the state board of equalization and then to state court, so keep the official transcript from the county hearing.
