The Estes Park sales tax is 8.95% on most retail purchases, combining a 5.0% town tax, Colorado’s 2.9% state tax, and Larimer County’s 1.05% tax. Short-term lodging is taxed at 14.45% once the Local Marketing District surcharge is added. Sellers collect the full amount at the register and remit it through the Colorado Department of Revenue.1Town of Estes Park. Sales Tax
How the 8.95% Breaks Down
Three separate taxes stack on every taxable sale inside town limits:
- Town of Estes Park: 5.0%
- Colorado state: 2.9%
- Larimer County: 1.05%
On a $100 taxable purchase, that works out to $5.00 to the town, $2.90 to the state, and $1.05 to the county, for $8.95 in tax.1Town of Estes Park. Sales Tax The buyer sees one line on the receipt; the seller files one return.
Lodging and Short-Term Rentals Pay 14.45%
Hotels, bed and breakfasts, vacation homes, and other short-term rentals carry a combined rate of 14.45%. That includes the standard 8.95% plus a 5.5% Local Marketing District tax that funds the Visit Estes Park tourism promotion program.1Town of Estes Park. Sales Tax
The LMD portion applies only to lodging, not to ordinary retail. If you rent a vacation unit, it comes off every night’s stay and is reported alongside your regular sales tax. Overlooking it is a common error for new operators, and the balance owed grows fast through the summer season.
What Is Taxable and What Is Not
The town’s sales tax applies to tangible personal property and specific services, including telecommunications, gas, and electricity furnished to consumers. Municipal Code Chapter 3.08 defines the tax base by reference to Colorado’s framework.2Town of Estes Park. Estes Park Municipal Code Ordinance 16-81
Groceries vs. Prepared Food
Food bought for home consumption is exempt from all three layers: state, county, and town. The exemption stops at the deli counter. Restaurant meals, catered events, convenience-store hot food, and grocery store prepared items are taxable at the full 8.95%.3Larimer County. Sales Tax Frequently Asked Questions A pack of raw chicken from the meat case is exempt. A rotisserie chicken from the hot bar is not.
Services
Most services that don’t transfer a physical product or deliver a taxed utility fall outside the sales tax. Accounting, legal work, and consulting are not taxable. The test is whether the transaction involves tangible property or one of the enumerated service categories.
If You Sell in Estes Park

- General business license: $50
- Accommodations license: $50 for five units or fewer, $100 for six to twenty units, $150 for twenty-one or more

- Vacation home: $200 base plus $50 per bedroom, plus a workforce housing regulatory linkage fee
- Bed and breakfast inn: $200 base plus $50 per guest bedroom

Filing and Paying
Sales tax collected in Estes Park is remitted through the Colorado Department of Revenue.1Town of Estes Park. Sales Tax You report gross sales, calculate what’s owed for the period, and submit electronically. The state accepts E-checks and credit cards.
Your filing frequency depends on volume. Higher-volume businesses file monthly; smaller operations may be assigned quarterly or annual schedules. Every return is due by the deadline for its period, and late filings pick up penalties and interest. Delaying doesn’t help, even if cash is tight.
Keeping Records
Hold onto sales records, exemption certificates, and tax payment documentation for at least three years after filing. That matches the general audit lookback. If income is underreported, the window can stretch to six or seven years, so keeping records longer is the safer move. Clean records also make a county or state audit far less painful.
Selling into Colorado from Out of State
If you don’t have a physical presence in Colorado but ship to customers here, you still have collection obligations once you cross the state’s economic nexus threshold. Retail sales into Colorado above $100,000 in either the current or previous calendar year require you to register for a Colorado sales tax license and begin collecting.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Out-of-State Businesses
Timing works like this. If you cross the $100,000 line in the current year, you must apply for a license and start collecting by the first day of the month that falls at least 90 days after you crossed. If your previous year’s sales exceeded $100,000, you collect from January 1 of the current year.6Colorado Department of Revenue. Out-of-State Businesses
Colorado’s marketplace facilitator law, in effect since October 2019, shifts collection to platforms like Amazon or Etsy when the platform itself has nexus. Sales you make through your own website or a physical location stay your responsibility to collect and remit.
Use Tax: The Other Side of the Coin
Use tax applies when you buy taxable goods and the seller doesn’t charge Colorado or Estes Park sales tax. It runs at the same rate as sales tax, and the obligation sits entirely on the buyer. The common triggers: ordering supplies from an out-of-state vendor with no Colorado nexus, buying in a lower-tax jurisdiction, or pulling items out of your own inventory for business use instead of resale.
Pulling promotional merchandise from inventory to hand out at a trade show triggers use tax, because those items were originally bought tax-free for resale. Same for office supplies or furniture you first purchased as inventory and then decided to keep. Larimer County’s 1.05% use tax applies alongside the state and town portions, so the total matches the 8.95% sales tax rate.7Larimer County. Sales and Use Tax
