Mississippi’s fast track title program delivers a vehicle title in 72 business hours instead of the usual three to four weeks, for a flat $30 on top of standard titling costs.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Title Procedure The program is authorized under Mississippi Code 63-21-15 and covers original titles for new purchases, transfers between private parties, and replacement titles for lost or damaged documents. The 72-hour clock only starts once the Department of Revenue has a complete application in hand, so the real work is getting the paperwork right the first time.
What You’ll Pay
The expedited surcharge is $30, added to whatever your transaction would normally cost.2Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title
- Original title for a new purchase or transfer: standard title fee plus the $30 fast track fee. You’ll also owe privilege tax, ad valorem taxes, registration fees, and possibly sales or use tax when you register.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions
- Fast track replacement title: $39 total, combining the $9 replacement fee with the $30 expedited fee.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions
Ad valorem taxes are set at the county level, so your county tax collector is the right place to call for an exact total.
Which Form to Use
The form depends on what you’re trying to do.
For a new purchase or a transfer between owners, use the Application for Certificate of Title, Form 78-002.4Legal Information Institute. 35 Mississippi Code R 7-05-10-100 – Application for Certificate of Title You’ll list the vehicle’s year, make, model, body type, VIN, and odometer reading.2Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title If two buyers appear on the bill of sale or manufacturer’s statement of origin, both names and both signatures must be on the application. If a bank or finance company holds a lien, include the lienholder’s name and mailing address.
For a lost, stolen, or damaged title you want expedited, use the Application for Fast Track Replacement Certificate of Title, Form 78-026, not the standard replacement form.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions Only file a replacement if you’re certain a Mississippi title already exists for the vehicle.5Mississippi Department of Revenue. Application for Replacement Certificate of Title If speed is not critical, the standard replacement form, 78-006, costs $9.6Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Titles
If someone else is handling the paperwork for you, they’ll need a Power of Attorney to Transfer Motor Vehicle, Form 78-003, signed by you in front of a notary. The form has to include the vehicle’s make, VIN, year, body type, title number, and odometer reading, and it travels with the title application as a supporting document.7Mississippi Department of Revenue. All forms are available at any county tax collector’s office or on the Department of Revenue’s website.
Where to Submit
You have three options, and they’re not equal on speed.
Walk-in is fastest. The Motor Vehicle Services office is at 500 Clinton Center Drive, Clinton, MS 39056, about ten miles west of downtown Jackson.8Mississippi Department of Revenue. You can also file through your county tax collector, who reviews your documents and forwards them to the central office. Convenient if you’re also paying registration and taxes, but it adds transit time.
What the 72-Hour Clock Actually Measures
The statute requires the Department of Revenue to finish processing within 72 hours, excluding weekends and holidays, once a complete application and payment are physically in hand.2Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title Three things fall outside that window:
- Mailing time to Jackson. If you mail from the Coast or the Delta, you can lose three to five days before the clock even starts.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Title Procedure
- Transit time from your county tax collector to the central office, if you filed locally.
- Return mail time. The finished title is mailed to the owner, or to the lienholder if a lien is recorded.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Title Procedure
For comparison, standard processing takes three to four weeks after the Department of Revenue receives the application.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions The $30 fee moves you to the front of that line.
Why Applications Get Rejected
“Complete” is doing heavy lifting in the statute. A missing signature, a transposed digit in the VIN, or a missing supporting document means the application isn’t complete, the 72-hour guarantee doesn’t apply, and you’re starting over. The $30 doesn’t buy forgiveness on paperwork; it only buys speed on paperwork that’s already right.
Check the VIN character by character against the vehicle itself. If there are co-owners, confirm both signatures are present. If there’s a lien, confirm the lienholder’s name and address are correct. If a power of attorney is involved, confirm it’s notarized and attached.
Situations Fast Track Won’t Help With
A few things sit outside this program:
- Boats. Watercraft are registered through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, not the Department of Revenue.9Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Boat Registration and Renewal
- Older ATVs. ATVs and utility task vehicles historically fell outside Department of Revenue titling. SB 2803, passed in 2025, brought them under the title law for units manufactured or first sold after July 1, 2025. If you own a newer ATV, check with your county tax collector before assuming fast track applies.10Mississippi Legislature. Senate Bill 2803 – 2025 Regular Session
- Transfers from a deceased owner. These require probate paperwork (a court-validated will, or Form 78-014 if there was no will) through the county tax collector, and the Department of Revenue’s fast track page doesn’t confirm the 72-hour window applies. Expect additional review even if you pay the expedited fee.
- Salvage-branded vehicles and anything outside Mississippi’s mandatory titling requirements, which may need documentation that doesn’t fit the 72-hour window.
Mobile and manufactured homes, on the other hand, do go through the same titling system as cars and trucks and are eligible for fast track processing.11Mississippi Department of Revenue. Mobile/Manufactured Homes
