You can renew your FDNY Certificate of Fitness starting 60 days before the printed expiration date, and the standard fee is $15 handled online through the FDNY portal. If the certificate has already expired, you have up to one year to renew with a $25 late penalty tacked on after day 90. Miss that one-year window and the certificate is permanently voided, meaning you start over as a first-time applicant. FDNY COF renewal is almost always an online transaction now; walk-in renewals at headquarters are no longer accepted.
When the Renewal Window Opens
The portal will not accept your application until 60 calendar days before expiration. The FDNY sends a reminder roughly 90 days out by email or mail, but the reminder is not the green light; the 60-day mark is.1UpCodes. If Your Certificate Has Already Expired
An expired certificate is not immediately dead. The NYC Fire Code gives you up to one year after the expiration date to submit a renewal. Renewals filed more than 90 days past expiration carry a $25 late penalty on top of the $15 fee, for a total of $40.2NYC Business. How to Renew Online
The FDNY offers two online paths. Pick the right one before you log in.
The simplified renewal is for holders whose certificate is not fee-exempt and whose personal information has not changed. It runs through the FDNY’s online portal and does not require an NYC ID account. It is the faster route for most people.
The comprehensive renewal runs through NYC.gov with an NYC ID login. Use it if you need to update your name, address, or employer, or if your certificate is fee-exempt. Fee-exempt renewals always go through this path, even when nothing else has changed.3NYC Fire Department. How to Renew a Certificate of Fitness
Renewing by Mail
Mail renewals go to the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention at 9 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Send the completed form, the fee by check or money order payable to the “New York City Fire Department,” and any required employer recommendation letter in a single envelope. Keep a copy and any tracking information; you will not have an online confirmation to fall back on. Processing times are not published, so do not wait until the final week before expiration to drop it in the mail.4Fire Department of New York. Certificates of Fitness
What You’ll Need to Submit
Every renewal requires your current Certificate of Fitness number and a valid email address. The FDNY may require you to be photographed or to submit two passport-size photos for an updated ID card. Some certificate types require an employer recommendation letter. If yours does, the letter must be typed, printed on company letterhead, and signed by hand. The employer’s printed name and title go beneath the signature. Unsigned letters are rejected outright, and the FDNY has not indicated that electronic signatures are accepted.6NYC Fire Department. Fee Waivers for NYC Agency Employees
If you work for a New York City agency, your renewal is fee-exempt. Claiming the exemption means using the comprehensive renewal path with an NYC ID account and submitting a recommendation letter on your agency’s official letterhead along with proof of current employment. The simplified path cannot process fee-exempt renewals, so plan for the extra login step.4Fire Department of New York. Certificates of Fitness
Working on an Expired Certificate
Performing any duty that requires a certificate of fitness after the certificate has expired is unlawful under the NYC Fire Code.1UpCodes. FDNY inspectors check for valid certificates during routine inspections, and violations commonly carry fines of $1,000 or more. A violation on a building’s record can also complicate future permit renewals and insurance coverage for the owner.
The department can additionally deny, suspend, or revoke a certificate for misconduct, including false statements on an application.
