The Missouri MO-CRP form, formally the Certification of Rent Paid, is a one-page document the Missouri Department of Revenue uses to verify how much rent you paid during the year so you can claim the Property Tax Credit worth up to $750. You fill in your rental details and rent totals, your landlord signs to certify the figures, and you attach the completed form to either Form MO-PTC (if you’re not filing a Missouri income tax return) or Form MO-PTS (if you are). Without it, the Department has no way to confirm the rent numbers on your claim.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Form MO-CRP – 2025 Certification of Rent Paid
You need one MO-CRP for every rental address you occupied during the tax year. If you moved, track down each former landlord separately.
Before You Start: Are You Eligible for the Credit?
The MO-CRP is only useful if you qualify for the Property Tax Credit itself. To claim it as a renter, you or your spouse must meet one of these tests:
- Age 65 or older by December 31 of the tax year, and a Missouri resident for the entire year
- Age 60 or older and receiving surviving spouse Social Security benefits during the year
- 100 percent disabled as determined by the Social Security Administration or another qualifying agency
- 100 percent service-connected disabled veteran
For veterans, the threshold is a full 100 percent service-connected rating, not a lower one.2Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Revised Statutes of Missouri, RSMo Section 135.010
Household income must also fall at or below $27,200 for single filers or $29,200 for married filing combined. Household income here is broader than the federal definition and includes Social Security, pensions, public assistance, and other sources most people leave off a federal return, so run the numbers before you spend time on the form.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Property Tax Credit FAQs
One important boundary: if you live in tax-exempt housing, such as a government-owned building or certain nonprofit facilities, the landlord pays no property tax on the dwelling. There’s no property tax cost embedded in your rent for the credit to reimburse, so the claim can be denied even if you otherwise qualify.
What to Gather Before You Fill It Out
Get the current-year form from the Department of Revenue’s site at dor.mo.gov, or request a paper copy from a local tax assistance office. Then pull together, for each rental address:
- Your landlord’s full legal name and current mailing address
- Your landlord’s Social Security Number or Federal Employer Identification Number
- The physical address of the rental unit
- The exact dates you lived there during the tax year
- Your total rent payments for those months
The landlord identification number is where most claims stall. Some landlords don’t want to share a Social Security Number, and individual landlords may not have an FEIN. The form itself is blunt about the consequences: “Failure to provide landlord information may result in denial or delay of your claim.”1Missouri Department of Revenue. Filling In the Form
Rent Amounts
The credit covers only the shelter portion of your rent. Subtract any amounts included in your rent that pay for utilities, furniture, meals, or services such as nursing care. What’s left is your net rent paid, and that figure is what flows into the credit calculation on Form MO-PTC or MO-PTS.
Under Missouri law, 20 percent of your gross rent is treated as the portion attributable to property taxes. That percentage is already built into the credit formula, so you don’t compute it on the MO-CRP itself.2Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Revised Statutes of Missouri, RSMo Section 135.010
Shared Residence (Box G)
If you share the rental with someone other than your spouse or your children under 18, use the Shared Residence option in Box G. Select the percentage that matches how many additional people share the rent:
- One additional person: 50%
- Two additional persons: 33%
- Three additional persons: 25%
That percentage goes on Line 7 and is multiplied by the gross rent on Line 6 to produce your share of net rent on Line 8. Each roommate who claims the credit files their own MO-CRP showing their allocated portion.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Form MO-CRP – 2025 Certification of Rent Paid
Landlord Signature
Once the rent figures are on the form, take it to your landlord. Their signature certifies that the amounts are accurate. Because this is a legal certification, expect some landlords to want to check the numbers against their own records first.
If Your Landlord Won’t Sign or Provide an ID Number
The MO-PTC instructions reference Form 5674, Verification of Rent Paid, alongside the MO-CRP as a document you may need to attach.4Missouri Department of Revenue. 2025 Property Tax Credit Claim Instructions Form 5674 is a separate Department of Revenue form that serves as an alternative verification of rent payments.5Missouri Department of Revenue. Form 5674 – Tenant and Rental Information Verification of Rent Paid
If your landlord refuses to sign or won’t share an identification number, keep every piece of backup you can find: canceled checks, bank statements showing recurring rent payments, money order receipts, and your written lease. The MO-CRP itself does not spell out a formal alternative process, so the strongest move is to submit as much supporting documentation as possible and let the Department verify the claim through its own resources.
How and Where to File
Attach your completed, signed MO-CRP to either Form MO-PTC or Form MO-PTS. Use MO-PTC if you aren’t filing a Missouri income tax return. Use MO-PTS if you are; it attaches to your Form MO-1040.6Missouri Department of Revenue. Form MO-PTS – 2025 Property Tax Credit Schedule Either path leads to the same credit.
