Proxy Marriage
Montana is one of the few states allowing proxy marriage, where someone stands in for an absent party. Filing the Certificate After the Wedding
The officiant (or a party to the marriage, if you self-solemnized) completes the marriage certificate and returns it to the Flathead County Clerk of District Court within 30 days.9Montana Code Annotated. Montana Code Annotated 40-1-321 – Registration of Marriage Follow up with your officiant if you haven’t confirmed the filing; late submission carries a small statutory fine, but the real risk is a missing record when you need one.

Changing Your Name
Your certified marriage certificate is the legal proof of a name change, but several agencies need to be updated separately. Start with the Social Security Administration using Form SS-5. Bring your certified marriage certificate and proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or passport. You can begin the process online, but originals or certified copies must be submitted in person or by mail; photocopies are not accepted. The new card usually arrives within 10 to 14 business days, and SSA notifies the IRS automatically.
After your Social Security record is updated, take your certified certificate to the Montana Motor Vehicle Division for a new driver’s license. If you have a passport, update it through the U.S. Department of State. Waiting about 48 hours after the SSA visit before going to the MVD lets the systems sync and avoids processing holds at the counter.

If you want an official record without a ceremony, you can file a Declaration of Marriage Without Solemnization with the Clerk of District Court.4Montana Judicial Branch.
