The Florida CDL Help Desk phone number is 850-617-2606. It is run by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and handles the administrative problems that keep commercial drivers off the road: medical certification updates, self-certification changes, license downgrades, disqualifications, Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse holds, hazmat endorsement timing, and errors on your driving record.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Contact Us If your CDL status changed without warning or a document you submitted hasn’t posted, this is the office that can tell you why and fix it.
What the Help Desk Can Fix
Medical Certification and Self-Certification
Every CDL holder operating in non-excepted interstate or non-excepted intrastate commerce must keep a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) on file with FLHSMV.2Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical Examiners Certificate (MEC), Form MCSA-5876 When the certificate expires or an updated one hasn’t been received, your status flips from “certified” to “not-certified.” Help Desk staff can tell you exactly where a submission stalled.
You also self-certify your operating category: non-excepted interstate, excepted interstate, non-excepted intrastate, or excepted intrastate.3eCFR. 49 CFR 383.71 – Driver Application and Certification Procedures Drivers in the two excepted categories are not required to submit a medical certificate at all.4Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical If your work changes and you need to switch categories, the Help Desk updates the record.
Disqualifications and Downgrades
Under Florida law, two serious traffic violations within three years result in a 60-day CDL disqualification, and three within the same period extend that to 120 days. Serious violations include reckless driving, speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, improper lane changes, following too closely, texting while driving, and operating a commercial vehicle without proper credentials.5Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.61 – Disqualification From Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle Federal rules add another layer: major offenses such as DUI, leaving the scene of a crash, or using a commercial vehicle to commit a felony trigger a one-year disqualification for a first offense and a lifetime disqualification for a second.6eCFR. 49 CFR 383.51 – Disqualification of Drivers
If you think a disqualification came from a coding mistake in your driving history, the Help Desk reviews the underlying court and law enforcement records. Those mistakes happen more often than drivers realize, and they can be the difference between an active CDL and a Class E downgrade.
Clearinghouse Holds
Since November 18, 2024, FLHSMV must remove commercial driving privileges from any driver whose status in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is “prohibited” (a positive drug or alcohol test, or a refusal).7Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Clearinghouse II and CDL Downgrades – State Compliance Begins The state must query the Clearinghouse before issuing, renewing, upgrading, or transferring any CDL or commercial learner’s permit, and if the result is “prohibited,” it must begin a downgrade within 60 days.8eCFR. 49 CFR 383.73 – State Procedures Your CDL stays downgraded until you complete the full return-to-duty process under 49 CFR Part 40. Once your status reads “not prohibited,” the Help Desk can walk you through reinstatement.9Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. CDL Downgrades The state acts on the Clearinghouse flag independently of your employer, so calling early is often how drivers first learn why a renewal was blocked.
Hazmat Endorsement Timing
Adding or renewing a hazmat endorsement involves a TSA background check and fingerprinting, done in Florida through a driver license office rather than TSA’s standard online pre-enrollment.10Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement After TSA approval, FLHSMV mails the updated CDL from Tallahassee, which can take up to 90 days. If your current endorsement is about to expire while you wait, call the Help Desk at 850-617-2606 to request an extension letter. Appeals of a TSA denial go through TSA directly at 833-848-4759, not through the state.
Entry-Level Driver Training Holds
First-time CDL applicants, upgrades to a higher class, and certain endorsements require completion of Entry-Level Driver Training through a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, and the state verifies that record before letting you test.11Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. FMCSA Launches Training Provider Registry to Ensure Entry-Level Truck and Bus Drivers If your provider hasn’t uploaded your completion, the Help Desk can tell you whether the hold-up is on the provider’s end or the state’s.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
Staff verify your identity before changing anything, so incomplete information means a call-back. Gather these first:
- Your full legal name as it appears on your current Florida license.
- Your Florida driver license number: one letter followed by 12 digits.
- Your Social Security number, used to confirm you’re the record holder.
- Your current Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) if you’re updating medical certification. The examining provider must be listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, and the national registry number on the form needs to be legible.2Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical Examiners Certificate (MEC), Form MCSA-5876
- Your self-certification category. The FMCSA FAQ walks through the four options if you’re unsure.12Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. How Do I Determine Which of the 4 Categories of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Operation I Should Self-Certify to With My State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA)?
Expect an automated menu before you reach a live agent. Calling early in the week and early in the day tends to be faster.
Other Numbers You Might Need
A separate CDL retest help line is available at 850-617-2707, specifically for test-related questions.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Contact Us For hazmat endorsement denials, call TSA at 833-848-4759. The main Help Desk line, 850-617-2606, is the right number for everything else described above.
Submitting Documents Without Calling
Not every issue needs a phone call. Medical certificates can be submitted through the dedicated FLHSMV online portal or in person at any Florida driver license office. The state does not accept medical certificates by email, fax, or regular mail.13Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. State-by-state Instructions for Submitting Medical Certificates to the State Driver Licensing Agencies The online portal is the fastest option when you can’t visit an office.
The MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov handles CDL renewals, replacements, commercial learner’s permit replacements, and voluntary downgrades.14Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. MyDMV Portal Medical certificate uploads go through the separate medical certification portal, not through MyDMV.
What a Lapsed Medical Certification Costs You
A lapsed medical certificate is the most common reason drivers end up calling the Help Desk. If FLHSMV does not receive your updated certification in time, your CDL is downgraded to a non-commercial Class E license, and you’re disqualified from operating any commercial motor vehicle until you either refile or switch to an excepted self-certification category.13Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. State-by-state Instructions for Submitting Medical Certificates to the State Driver Licensing Agencies
Driving on a downgraded CDL carries real risk. Roadside inspections pull your license status electronically, and a citation for operating a commercial vehicle without proper credentials counts as a serious traffic violation under Florida Code 322.61, which can trigger the 60-day and 120-day disqualification tiers.5Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.61 – Disqualification From Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle To restore the CDL, submit a current medical certificate through the online portal or at a driver license office and pay any reinstatement fee. If too much time passes, you may have to reapply from scratch, including retaking the knowledge and skills tests.
Confirming the Fix Took
After you submit documents or finish a Help Desk call, check your license status with the FLHSMV Driver License Check tool at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov. Enter your license number and the system shows whether your license is valid and whether your medical certification is current.15Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Driver License Check A “VALID” status means your record is clear. Confirm this before getting behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle.
If the Help Desk needs more from you, they send a notice to the email or mailing address on your record. Keep that contact information current, because a missed notice does not stop the downgrade clock.
