Renewing a Florida CDL costs $75 and can be done up to 12 months before your expiration date, either online through the MyDMV Portal or in person at a driver license service center. A standard commercial driver license is valid for eight years; a HazMat endorsement cuts that to four. The two requirements most likely to derail an otherwise straightforward Florida CDL renewal are a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate and an accurate self-certification category on file with the state.
When Your Florida CDL Expires
A standard Florida CDL expires eight years after your last birthday before the license was issued or renewed.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.18 – Renewal; Expiration of Licenses Two things shorten that:
- A HazMat endorsement makes the license expire four years after your last birthday before issuance or renewal.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.18 – Renewal; Expiration of Licenses
- Drivers 80 and older receive a six-year renewal instead of eight.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.18 – Renewal; Expiration of Licenses
FLHSMV mails a renewal notice to the address on file at least 30 days before your birthday. The 12-month advance window is worth using if your work schedule is tight or you need to line up a DOT physical.
Medical Certification and Self-Certification
Before a renewal can be processed, two things must be on file with FLHSMV: a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (if your self-certification category requires one) and a current self-certification declaring the type of commercial driving you do.
Medical Examiner’s Certificate
Interstate CDL holders must get their physical from a provider listed on the FMCSA’s National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.2Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners If you’re physically qualified, the examiner issues Form MCSA-5876, the Medical Examiner’s Certificate.3Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical Examiners Certificate MEC, Form MCSA-5876 As of June 2025, medical examiners transmit DOT exam information to the state electronically, so the certificate should appear in FLHSMV’s system without you having to deliver paperwork yourself.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information
Letting the medical card lapse is one of the fastest ways to lose a CDL. If the certificate expires and no new one is filed, FLHSMV can disqualify your commercial driving privilege even though the license itself hasn’t expired.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information
Your Self-Certification Category
Every Florida CDL holder must declare one of four categories describing the type of driving they do and whether a medical card is required:4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information
- Non-excepted interstate (Category A): driving across state lines, federal medical card required.
- Excepted interstate (Category B): driving across state lines under a federal exception, no medical card required.
- Non-excepted intrastate (Category C): driving only within Florida, state medical card required.
- Excepted intrastate (Category D): driving only within Florida under a state exception, no medical card required.
In Category A or C, your medical card has to stay current at all times. If your type of operation has changed since your last renewal, update the category before you file.
How to Renew Online
Eligible drivers can renew through the MyDMV Portal.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. MyDMV Portal You create an account and verify your identity against FLHSMV’s records. If the system can’t verify you, it will send you to a service center. Online renewal works well if your documents are already on file and you don’t need to upgrade to REAL ID compliance.
How to Renew in Person
At a service center, expect a vision screening. Florida law requires both an eyesight test and a hearing test for CDL applicants, administered by a department examiner or a licensed physician.6The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.12 – Examination of Applicants You surrender your current license and receive a temporary paper permit that lets you keep driving while the permanent card is produced and mailed, which takes roughly seven to ten business days.
Documents You May Need
If you already hold a REAL ID-compliant CDL and your name and address haven’t changed, you don’t need to re-present identity documents at renewal.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring If your license isn’t REAL ID-compliant, or if your information has changed, bring the full set:
- One identity and legal-presence document, such as a valid U.S. passport or an original or certified birth certificate.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
- One document showing your full Social Security number with your name, such as the card itself or a W-2.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
- Two documents showing your current Florida address, such as utility bills, mortgage statements, or lease agreements.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
- Certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders if your legal name differs from the one on your birth certificate or passport.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID
Renewal Fees
The base CDL renewal fee is $75.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.21 – License Fees; Procedure for Handling and Collecting Fees On top of that:
- Each endorsement (tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) adds $7.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.21 – License Fees; Procedure for Handling and Collecting Fees
- The HazMat endorsement carries a separate state fee for the fingerprint-based background check. The state fee is set by FLHSMV rule and cannot exceed $100; the department currently charges $91.9The Florida Legislature. - Renewing within 12 months after expiration adds a $15 delinquent fee.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.21 – License Fees; Procedure for Handling and Collecting Fees
Teachers and school system employees who hold a CDL for their job may qualify for a reduced renewal fee equal to the standard Class E license fee.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.21 – License Fees; Procedure for Handling and Collecting Fees
HazMat Renewal Needs Extra Lead Time
Every HazMat renewal triggers a fresh TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment, which requires fingerprinting and a background check. TSA recommends starting at least 60 days before you need the determination because processing can exceed 45 days during busy periods.11Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement
The TSA threat assessment fee is $85.25, or $41 if you already hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).12TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA. HAZMAT Endorsement HME Threat Assessment Program That is separate from the $91 state fee FLHSMV charges.10Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Hazmat Information Florida’s administrative code requires HazMat applicants to undergo fingerprint-based background checks consistent with 49 CFR Part 1572 and the USA PATRIOT Act, and the check must clear before the license expiration date.13Legal Information Institute. If Your CDL Has Already Expired
Penalties for driving a commercial vehicle on an expired CDL escalate quickly:
- Expired 30 days or less: a nonmoving violation.14The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.03 – Drivers Must Be Licensed; Penalties
- Expired more than 30 days: a first-degree misdemeanor, up to one year in jail or a fine up to $1,000.14The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.03 – Drivers Must Be Licensed; Penalties
- Expired one year or more: a straight renewal is no longer available. FLHSMV requires you to retake all applicable CDL knowledge and skills exams and apply for an original CDL.15Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Commercial Driver License
Offenses That Block a Renewal
You can’t renew a CDL that’s under an active disqualification. Florida treats speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, following too closely, texting while driving, and using a handheld phone while driving as serious traffic violations for CDL purposes. Two of these within three years trigger a 60-day disqualification; three within three years trigger 120 days. The disqualifications apply even if the violations occurred in a personal vehicle, so long as the convictions result in a suspension, revocation, or cancellation.16The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.61 – Disqualification From Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle
A DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, or committing a felony involving a motor vehicle while operating a commercial vehicle brings at least a one-year disqualification for a first offense; three years if the vehicle was carrying hazardous materials. A second major offense is a lifetime disqualification.16The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.61 – Disqualification From Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle
Adding an Endorsement at Renewal
Renewal is a reasonable time to add an endorsement. For a first-time passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training through a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before testing for the endorsement; the requirement took effect in February 2022. Drivers who held the endorsement before that date aren’t subject to ELDT at renewal; the training requirement applies to first-time endorsement applicants only.17Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Each new endorsement adds $7 to the renewal cost.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.21 – License Fees; Procedure for Handling and Collecting Fees
Military Skills Test Waiver
Active-duty service members and recently discharged veterans can skip the CDL skills test when applying or renewing if they meet the criteria. You must have been honorably discharged within one year of applying and have operated a vehicle equivalent to the CDL class you’re seeking for at least two years immediately before separating.18Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Certification for Waiver of CDL Skills Test for Military Personnel
Eligible service includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, their reserve components, the Florida National Guard, and the Florida Air National Guard. Form HSMV 71054 must be completed by you and your commanding officer and submitted with a U.S. Armed Forces ID card or DD-214.18Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Certification for Waiver of CDL Skills Test for Military Personnel Your driving record has to be clean: no prior license suspensions, no disqualifying offenses, and no more than one serious traffic violation. If you qualify, you take only the applicable CDL knowledge exams.
