Florida Driver License Address Change: 30-Day Deadline and Steps

To complete a Florida driver license address change, you have 30 calendar days from the date you move. You can do it online through the MyDMV Portal or in person at a county tax collector’s office that handles driver licenses. The replacement card costs $25, plus a small transaction fee. Miss the 30-day window and you’re looking at a $30 nonmoving violation.

The 30-Day Deadline and the Penalty for Missing It

Florida Statutes Section 322.19 requires anyone who moves to a new legal residence or mailing address to obtain a replacement license reflecting the change within 30 calendar days.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status The clock starts on move day, not when you finish unpacking. Your written request has to include the old address, the new address, and your license number.

Missing the deadline is a nonmoving violation under Section 318.18(2), which sets the base fine at $30 before any county surcharges or court costs.2The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 318.18 – Amount of Penalties An officer at a traffic stop who sees an outdated address can write the citation right there. The quieter cost is mail: court summonses, registration renewal notices, and toll violation letters all go to the old place, and one missed notice can compound into a bigger problem than the fine itself.

Changing Your Address Online

The MyDMV Portal at mydmvportal.flhsmv.gov is the fastest option. Log in with your license number and date of birth, then follow the prompts to submit your new address. Standard online changes don’t require uploaded documents, because the system checks your new information against existing state records.

The replacement license fee is $25, and online transactions add a $2 non-refundable convenience fee.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The new card arrives by mail in roughly 7 to 10 business days, and your existing card stays valid until then.4Manatee County Tax Collector. One boundary to know: if you originally established your identity using immigration documents, Florida law requires the change to be made in person.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status The online portal won’t handle it.

Changing Your Address in Person

Go to a tax collector’s office that processes driver licenses. Many counties let you book an appointment online, and some require one. Walk-ins are accepted in a lot of locations, but wait times swing widely by county and time of day.

Bring your current license and the documents listed in the next section. A clerk reviews everything, captures your signature, and usually prints the new license while you wait, so you leave with the card in hand. The fee is the same $25, with a $6.25 service fee added by the tax collector’s office.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees Veterans who’ve previously provided proof of veteran status have that $6.25 fee waived.

Documents to Bring for an In-Person Change

Florida operates under REAL ID rules, and FLHSMV requires you to re-present identity documents whenever your residential address changes.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring U.S. citizens need to bring:

  • One primary ID: an original U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or certificate of naturalization.
  • One proof of Social Security number: a Social Security card, W-2, or 1099.
  • Two proofs of the new residential address, and they have to be two different document types.

FLHSMV splits the two address documents into categories. One has to be a “household information” document such as a deed, mortgage statement, or lease. The second is a “supporting” document like a utility bill dated within the last 60 days, a bank statement, or a vehicle registration.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Certification of Address If you live with someone else and the household documents are in their name, they can complete a Certification of Address form (HSMV 71120) to vouch for your residency.

Every document has to show your full legal name exactly as it appears on your license. Name mismatches between the license and a supporting document are the most common reason clerks turn people away, so verify before you leave home.

Non-U.S. Citizens Must Change Their Address in Person

If your identity was originally established with immigration documents, you cannot use the online portal.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status Alongside the proof of Social Security number and two residential address documents required of everyone, non-immigrants also have to present a valid primary immigration document. Accepted documents include:

  • An employment authorization card (DHS Form I-766 or I-688B).
  • A valid I-94 with a valid passport carrying an entry stamp. F-1 or M-1 students also need the I-20; J-1 exchange visitors need the DS-2019.
  • An I-571 travel document or an immigration judge’s order granting asylum, each with a valid passport.

All immigration documents have to be valid for more than 30 days from the date you apply. FLHSMV verifies status through the federal SAVE program.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Non-Immigrant If verification takes time, you receive a 60-day temporary paper permit while the check runs.

Separately, if you’ve become a U.S. citizen since your last license was issued, Section 322.19 requires you to obtain a replacement license reflecting that change within 30 days.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status

Vehicle Registration Doesn’t Update Automatically

This is where people get caught out. Changing your driver license address does not update the address on your vehicle registration. You handle that separately, and also within 30 days of moving.9Manatee County Tax Collector. Need to Change Your Address? The MyDMV Portal handles it, or you can do it at a tax collector’s office.

Your electronic title on file with the state will reflect the new address once you update the registration. Any previously printed paper title keeps the old address until you apply for a corrected one, which matters if you plan to sell or trade the vehicle soon.

Voter Registration Usually Updates With It

Under the National Voter Registration Act, an address change submitted through a motor vehicle agency also functions as a voter registration address change, unless you specifically opt out.10United States Department of Justice. The National Voter Registration Act Of 1993 (NVRA) That applies to online submissions as well as in-person visits.

Still, verify. You can check or update your voter registration at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov or through any supervisor of elections office.11Florida Division of Elections. Voter Registration – Register to Vote or Update Your Information Confirm before the next election, especially if you moved to a different county, because your polling location changes with it.

Tell Your Auto Insurer Separately

Your insurance company doesn’t get notified when you update your license, so call or message them directly. Insurers price policies partly on your garaging address, the zip code where the car sits overnight. A move from a rural area into downtown Orlando or Miami can push the premium up; moving the other direction can bring it down.

The larger risk is not reporting the move at all. Most auto policies include a provision requiring you to notify the insurer of address changes. If you file a claim and the company discovers you’ve been living at a different address than the one on file, it may deny the claim on the grounds that you misrepresented a material fact, even if the accident had nothing to do with your address.

Military and Student Exceptions

Service Members Stationed Outside Florida

Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, active-duty military stationed outside their home state on orders are not treated as residents of the state where they’re stationed for driver license purposes. If Florida is your home of record, you can keep your Florida license current without updating it to a temporary duty station address in another state. You still have to keep the license from expiring, and Florida offers remote renewal options for deployed service members.

If you move within Florida, say from one base to another, the standard 30-day rule applies. The SCRA keeps you out of another state’s licensing system; it doesn’t excuse you from keeping Florida records accurate when you move inside the state.

Full-Time Students

Florida law gives students a useful presumption: anyone with a valid, current student ID issued by a Florida educational institution is presumed not to have changed their legal residence or mailing address.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status If you live in a dorm or off-campus apartment but still treat your parents’ home as your permanent address, you generally don’t need to update the license each time you move between semesters. The presumption covers the driver license only. If you want to vote where your campus is, you register there separately.
