You can add emergency contacts to your Florida driver license for free through the state’s MyDMV Portal. The Emergency Contact Information (ECI) program, run by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, lets you link up to two people to your license or state ID so law enforcement can reach them if you’re in a crash or another emergency and can’t speak for yourself. What to Have Ready
You need a valid Florida driver license or state-issued ID card to register. Before you log in, gather:
- Your license or ID card number (the alphanumeric string on your card, formatted like Z123-456-78-901-0)
- Your date of birth as it appears on your record
- Full name, relationship, and a reliable phone number for each contact you want to list (up to two)

How to Register Online

Once you’re in, enter each contact’s full name, relationship to you, and phone number. You can list two, but even one is worth doing. If a trooper is standing at an accident scene with your license in hand, one working phone number is all they need.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Submit the form and the information saves to the state record. It won’t appear on the physical card, so no one who handles your license can see it.
Updating or Removing a Contact
Return to the same MyDMV Portal page whenever something changes. Log in the same way and you can edit a phone number, swap the order of your two contacts, replace one person with someone else, or delete a listing. The most common reason ECI fails during an emergency is a phone number that’s no longer in service. A good habit: check your listing whenever a contact changes their number, and again when you renew your license.
Who Can See Your Contacts
Law enforcement officers nationwide can pull up your ECI data, and only during an emergency. Since July 1, 2022, Florida law also gives narrow access to hospitals, receiving facilities, and licensed detoxification or addiction-treatment facilities. Those facilities can view your contacts only to notify them of your location after an emergency admission under the Baker Act or the Marchman Act.4Florida Senate. Emergency contact information in a motor vehicle record is classified as confidential and exempt from public records disclosure under Florida law. Without your express consent, it can be released only to law enforcement for emergency notification or to the medical facilities described above.4Florida Senate.
