Florida Driver’s License Requirements, Fees, and Renewal

To get a Florida driver’s license, you bring proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two documents showing your Florida residential address to a county tax collector’s office or FLHSMV service center, pay $48, and pass a vision screening, a 50-question written exam, and a road test. The standard Class E license is valid for eight years, and since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant version (the one with a gold star in the upper right corner) to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building.1TSA. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025 The Florida driver’s license requirements below cover what to bring, what you’ll pay, what you’ll be tested on, and how renewal works.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

Your first in-person visit requires originals in three categories: proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two separate proofs of your Florida residential address.2Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring

For identity, most U.S. citizens use a certified birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport. Your Social Security number can be verified with the original Social Security card, a W-2, or a pay stub showing the full number. Address proof might be a utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement — you need two different documents, not two copies of the same one.

If your name doesn’t match across these records because of a marriage, divorce, or court-ordered change, bring the original marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order that connects the names. Mismatched names are one of the most common reasons people get turned away at the counter, so check every document before you go.

REAL ID Compliance

The federal REAL ID Act set minimum security standards for state-issued licenses, and enforcement began on May 7, 2025.1TSA. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025 A compliant Florida license has a gold star in the upper right corner. Without it, or another federally accepted ID like a passport, you cannot board a commercial flight or enter certain federal facilities.

If your current license lacks the gold star, you’ll need to visit a service center in person with all three document categories above. You cannot upgrade to REAL ID online. Public Law 109-13 requires each state to verify identity, Social Security number, and address before issuing a compliant credential.3Government Publishing Office. REAL ID Act of 2005

Fees

Florida’s licensing fees are set by statute and apply statewide:4Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees

  • Original Class E license: $48.00
  • Renewal: $48.00
  • Replacement (lost or stolen): $25.00
  • Late renewal within 12 months of expiration: $48.00 plus a $15.00 delinquent fee5The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.21 – License Fees

Most people go to a county tax collector’s office rather than a state-run FLHSMV center. Tax collector offices add a $6.25 service fee per transaction on top of the state fee.4Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees Veterans who provide proof of veteran status are exempt from that $6.25 charge.

Testing: Vision, Written, and Road

First-time applicants should schedule an appointment through the GoRenew portal or the local tax collector’s website. Walk-ins are possible at some locations, but wait times can be significant. Three evaluations happen at the office.

Vision Screening

Every applicant takes a basic vision test. Florida’s minimum standard is 20/40 acuity; if either eye falls below that threshold, even with corrective lenses, you’ll be referred to a licensed eye specialist for further evaluation.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Report of Eye Examination Bring your glasses or contacts if you wear them. Florida does not require a hearing test for a standard Class E license.

Knowledge Exam

The written test has 50 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws and road signs. You need at least 40 correct — an 80 percent score — to pass.7Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Licensing Requirements for Teens, Graduated Driver License Laws, Driving Curfews If you fail, you can retake it, but each attempt requires paying the fee again. FLHSMV’s official driver license handbook, available free online, covers everything on the test.

Road Test

The road test evaluates turning, backing, lane changes, and stopping in real traffic situations. An examiner rides along and scores your performance. Once you pass all three evaluations, you’ll receive a paper temporary permit on the spot. Your permanent card is mailed to the address on your application, and FLHSMV estimates delivery within 7 to 10 business days.8Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. FAQ

Renewal: Cycle, Options, and Late Fees

A standard Florida Class E license is valid for eight years from your birthday following the date of issue. Drivers aged 80 and older receive a six-year license instead.9The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Sinkholes; Delinquent Licenses

Florida allows online renewal every other cycle through the MyDMV Portal.10Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Renew or Replace Your Florida Driver License or ID Card If you renewed online last time, your next renewal must be in person. You also must go in person if you need to update your photo, change your name, add or remove a credential designation, or become REAL ID-compliant for the first time.

If your license has already expired, you have a 12-month window to renew it. Within that window, you’ll pay the standard $48 plus a $15 delinquent fee.11The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses; Delinquent Licenses Beyond 12 months you may need to reapply as a new applicant.

Drivers Under 18

Teens go through a graduated system with different rules than adult applicants. A learner’s permit is available at 15, but only during daylight for the first three months, with the window extending to 10 p.m. after that. A licensed driver aged 21 or older must always be in the front passenger seat, and the learner’s license must be held for at least 12 months or until you turn 18, whichever comes first.7Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Licensing Requirements for Teens, Graduated Driver License Laws, Driving Curfews

Before upgrading to a full license, a parent or guardian must certify 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 at night. At 16, no driving between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless you’re going to or from work, or a licensed adult 21 or older is in the car. At 17, the curfew loosens to 1 a.m. through 5 a.m. All curfew restrictions drop at 18.

Drivers 80 and Older

Drivers who reach 80 receive a six-year license instead of the standard eight-year term.11The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses; Delinquent Licenses If you’re 80 or older and not eligible to renew online, you must pass a vision test at a service center or have one administered by a Florida-licensed physician or optometrist.12Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Driver License Renewal Requirements/Options for Older Drivers Some drivers in this age group may still qualify for online renewal through the MyDMV Portal, so check eligibility there before making a trip to the office.

Non-U.S. Citizens

Florida issues driver’s licenses to non-citizens who can prove lawful presence in the United States, but the rules differ from those for citizens. You’ll need immigration documents such as a valid Employment Authorization Card, an I-94 with supporting attachments and a valid passport, or other USCIS documentation confirming your status.13Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Non-Immigrant

The key difference is expiration. Your Florida license will be issued for the period specified on your immigration documents, up to a maximum of one year.13Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Non-Immigrant When your immigration status is extended, you’ll need to return with updated documents to get a new license. Non-citizens applying for an original license receive a 60-day temporary paper permit while FLHSMV verifies identity and legal status; the permanent card is mailed within that 60-day window if verification succeeds. Your immigration documents must have at least 30 days of validity remaining at the time you apply.

Digital License

Florida authorizes a digital version of your license through its electronic credentialing system, commonly called the Florida Smart ID. The credential lives on your phone and uses encrypted verification so that businesses or law enforcement can confirm your identity without handling your device.14The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.032 – Digital Proof of Driver License or Identification Card

You can present a digital license during a traffic stop, but if the officer cannot immediately verify it, you must produce your printed license on demand.15Florida Public Law. Florida Statutes 322.15 – License to Be Carried and Exhibited on Demand Carrying the physical card as a backup is the safest approach. You also cannot get a digital credential until you’ve been issued a printed license first.14The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.032 – Digital Proof of Driver License or Identification Card

What Keeps the License Valid Between Renewals

Driving legally in Florida requires more than a license — you need active insurance. Florida mandates two minimum coverages:16The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 627.736 – Required Personal Injury Protection Benefits; Exclusions; Priority; Claims

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): $10,000 minimum
  • Property Damage Liability (PDL): $10,000 minimum

Florida is a no-fault state, so your own PIP pays your medical bills after an accident regardless of who caused it, up to the policy limit. Bodily injury liability is not required for most drivers.

Traffic violations feed a point system, and enough points trigger a mandatory suspension:17Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 322.27 – Authority of Department to Suspend or Revoke Driver License

  • 12 points within 12 months: suspension of up to 30 days
  • 18 points within 18 months: suspension of up to 3 months
  • 24 points within 36 months: suspension of up to 1 year

A single speeding ticket can carry 3 or 4 points depending on how far over the limit you were, so it doesn’t take many violations to put your license at risk. If you receive a suspension, you may be eligible for a hardship license that allows driving to work or school, but you’ll need to apply through FLHSMV.
