If you serve in the military, Florida’s main fishing license discount is the Military Gold Sportsman’s License, which costs $20 a year instead of the $100 civilians pay for the same package.1Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Military Gold Sportsman’s License Service members home on leave for 30 days or less and honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or higher pay nothing at all. Which benefit you use depends on your duty status, where you live, and whether the VA has rated you disabled.
The $20 Military Gold Sportsman’s License
This is the benefit most eligible service members will want. For $20 a year, the Military Gold license covers everything the standard $100 Gold Sportsman’s License covers: freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, and hunting, bundled with the add-on permits for snook, spiny lobster, deer, turkey, Florida waterfowl, wildlife management areas, archery, crossbow, and muzzleloading gun.1Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Military Gold Sportsman’s License Even an angler who never hunts comes out ahead of buying separate licenses and stamps.
Who Qualifies
You must be a Florida resident and fall into one of two groups:2Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 379.354 – Recreational Licenses, Permits, and Authorization Numbers; Fees Established
- Active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Armed Forces Reserve, Florida National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, or Coast Guard Reserve.
- Retired members of any of those same branches.
Veterans who separated without retiring do not qualify for this specific license. The FWC’s online system verifies active duty or retired status electronically, not general veteran status.1Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Military Gold Sportsman’s License If you separated without retirement, you buy a regular resident license unless you qualify under the disabled veteran rules below.
Florida Residency If You’re Stationed Here
Residency for license purposes is broader than you might expect. Active duty members stationed in Florida with orders count as residents even if their home of record is another state, and the same goes for the spouse and dependent children living in the household.3Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. What Qualifies as Florida Residency? An airman at MacDill with a Georgia driver’s license can buy the same Military Gold license as someone born in Tampa. Retired members, reservists, and Guard members who claim Florida as their primary residence qualify regardless of where they’re currently stationed.

Free While Home on Leave
If you’re a Florida resident serving in the military but stationed outside the state, you need no license or permit while home on leave for 30 days or less.6The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 379.353 – Recreational License and Permit Exemptions The exemption covers freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, hunting, and all the associated permits for snook, spiny lobster, deer, turkey, waterfowl, and management areas.7Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Do I Need a License or Permit?
Carry your leave orders when you fish. If a wildlife officer checks you, those orders are the only proof of the exemption. Without them, you’re in the same position as any angler without a license.
Free for Disabled Veterans Rated 50 Percent or Higher
Florida offers a no-cost license for disabled veterans, but the threshold is specific. You must be all of the following:8Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Persons with Disabilities Resident Hunting and Fishing License
- A Florida resident.
- An honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or a military branch as having a service-connected disability rating of 50 percent or greater.
A veteran with a 40 percent rating does not qualify under the disabled veteran provision. The license is valid for five years and must be renewed at the end of each period.6The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 379.353 – Recreational License and Permit Exemptions It carries the same scope as the leave exemption: no fees for freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, hunting, or any of the associated permits.
To apply, go to GoOutdoorsFlorida.com, upload your VA disability certification and a Florida driver’s license or ID, and wait for FWC to review it. Once approved, the license populates in your account.8Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Persons with Disabilities Resident Hunting and Fishing License
Organized Event Exemption
If you participate in an organized outdoor event for disabled veterans or active and reserve service members, and the organizer has obtained a Military/Disabled Veteran Event License Exemption Permit from FWC, you don’t need a license for the event. The exemption also covers immediate family (parent, spouse, or child) and one designated assistant for any disabled veteran who needs help.6The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 379.353 – Recreational License and Permit Exemptions The organizer handles the paperwork; your attendance is what triggers the exemption.
Why Carrying Proof Matters
Fishing without a valid license in Florida is a Level One wildlife violation. First offense: a $50 civil penalty plus the cost of the license you should have had. A second offense within 36 months runs $250 plus the license cost.9Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 379.401 – Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation; Penalties
If you actually held a valid license and simply didn’t have proof on you, you can avoid conviction by producing it before or at your court hearing. The court clerk may charge a $10 processing fee for the verification.9Florida House of Representatives. Florida Code 379.401 – Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation; Penalties For anyone using the leave exemption, that same principle is why your orders need to be with you on the water. A wildlife officer has no way to verify your status without the paperwork.
