Total tax on a gallon of gasoline in Florida runs from 56.3 cents to 62.3 cents in 2026, and which end of that range you pay depends on your county. Florida gas taxes by county vary because of local option fuel taxes that each county commission decides whether to impose. The federal tax and Florida’s state-level taxes are identical in all 67 counties; the local layer is the only piece that moves.1Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel
What Every Florida Driver Pays Regardless of County
Before any local tax is added, every gallon of gasoline sold in Florida carries the same stack of federal and state charges.
The federal excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. Congress last changed that rate in 1993, and it is not adjusted for inflation.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 510 (12/2025), Excise Taxes3Federal Highway Administration. When Did the Federal Government Begin Collecting the Gas Tax?
On top of that, Florida applies four statewide components that reach every county:
- A flat state excise tax of 4 cents per gallon, set by statute and not adjusted for inflation.
- The State Comprehensive Enhanced Transportation System (SCETS) tax, which is 9.9 cents per gallon for 2026, up from 9.7 cents the prior year. This rate adjusts annually based on CPI changes measured through the preceding September 30.4The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 206.41 – Levy of Tax
- A fuel sales tax, also CPI-adjusted annually from a 1989 statutory base of 6.9 cents per gallon. It is collected at the wholesale level rather than at the pump.
- An inspection fee of 0.125 cents per gallon that funds fuel-quality testing.
Two of these components move each January 1 with inflation, so Florida’s state fuel tax creeps up most years without a legislative vote. The Three Local Option Taxes That Create County-by-County Differences
Florida law gives county commissions three separate levers to raise fuel tax revenue for local roads and transit. Combined, they can add up to 12 cents per gallon on gasoline.6Florida Dept. of Revenue. Local Option Taxes Whether a county pulls all three levers, some, or none is what produces the price gap between filling up in Orlando and filling up in Fort Lauderdale.
Ninth-Cent Fuel Tax
Any county may impose a 1-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline by a supermajority vote of its commission or through a voter referendum.7The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 336.021 – County Transportation System; Levy of Ninth-Cent Fuel Tax on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel Revenue must go toward transportation such as road maintenance, public transit, and bridge work.
1-to-6-Cent Local Option Tax
Counties can levy between 1 and 6 cents per gallon on both gasoline and diesel. The commission chooses a whole-cent rate within that range, and the money is restricted to transportation uses including road construction, street lighting, traffic signals, drainage, and debt service on transportation capital projects.8The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 336.025 – County Transportation System; Levy of Local Option Fuel Tax on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel
1-to-5-Cent Local Option Tax
A third layer allows up to 5 additional cents per gallon on gasoline only. Diesel is excluded from this one.6Florida Dept. of Revenue. Local Option Taxes Counties with fewer than 50,000 residents as of April 1992 have slightly broader spending flexibility, including the ability to fund non-transportation infrastructure after a public hearing and a certification that all transportation needs in the county’s comprehensive plan have been met.8The Florida Legislature. 2026 Gasoline Tax Totals by County
In 2026, the combined federal, state, and local tax on gasoline falls into one of two tiers for nearly every Florida county.1Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel
Counties at the 56.3-cent floor include Orange (Orlando), Hillsborough (Tampa), Pinellas (St. Petersburg), Brevard (Melbourne), Lake, Indian River, and St. Johns. These counties impose fewer or lower local option taxes on gasoline.
Counties at the 62.3-cent ceiling include Broward (Fort Lauderdale), Palm Beach, Duval (Jacksonville), Collier (Naples), Lee (Fort Myers), Leon (Tallahassee), Sarasota, Seminole, Volusia (Daytona Beach), and Monroe (the Keys). These counties have maximized or nearly maximized their local option levies.
Diesel Is the Same in Every County
Diesel does not vary across Florida. The ninth-cent tax is mandatory statewide on diesel rather than optional,9Florida House of Representatives. 2025 Florida Statutes 206.87 – Levy of Tax and the 1-to-5-cent option does not apply to diesel at all. The federal diesel rate is 24.4 cents per gallon.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 510 (12/2025), Excise Taxes The result is a uniform total diesel tax of 63.3 cents per gallon in every Florida county.1Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel
Looking Up Your County’s Exact Rate
Two official sources publish the full county-by-county breakdown each year. The Florida Department of Revenue issues a chart titled “Florida Fuel Tax, Collection Allowance, Refund, and Pollutants Tax Rates” that lists every component for every county, with a “Total Tax Imposed” column showing the combined per-gallon amount.5Florida Department of Revenue. 2026 Florida Fuel Tax, Collection Allowance, Refund, and Pollutants Tax Rates The Office of Economic and Demographic Research publishes a condensed companion table with the same data.1Florida Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel Both are updated before January 1, when the CPI-adjusted components take effect for the new year.
