Florida Gold Sportsman License: Cost, Coverage, and Exclusions

The Florida Gold Sportsman License is a $100 annual resident package from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) that combines three core licenses and nine specialized permits, covering nearly every recreational hunting and fishing activity in the state. If you hunt and fish across seasons and species, it’s the most complete option Florida sells.

What’s Bundled Into the License

The package starts with the three licenses most Florida outdoorsmen would otherwise buy separately: the statewide Hunting License, the Freshwater Fishing License, and the Saltwater Fishing License. On top of those, nine permits are included:

  • Deer Permit
  • Turkey Permit
  • Florida Waterfowl Permit
  • Archery Season Permit
  • Muzzleloading Gun Season Permit
  • Crossbow Season Permit
  • Wildlife Management Area Permit, required for hunting on most state-managed public lands
  • Snook Permit, required to harvest snook in saltwater
  • Spiny Lobster Permit, required to harvest spiny lobster

With all twelve items in hand, a license holder can take part in general gun, archery, muzzleloading, and crossbow seasons, pursue deer, turkey, and waterfowl, access wildlife management areas, and fish both fresh and saltwater for virtually every species that doesn’t require a separate tag. Seasonal dates, bag limits, and size limits still apply to each activity.

Cost and Duration

The annual resident Gold Sportsman License is $100, including the statutory issuance fee built into the price shown on the FWC website.1Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Recreational Hunting Licenses and Permits Buying through a retail license agent such as a bait shop or sporting goods store may add a 50¢ vendor fee. Online orders at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com carry handling fees of $2.25, or $1.75 plus a 2.95% surcharge on the total sale.2Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A five-year version costs $494, which saves about $6 over five single-year purchases before transaction fees.1Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Recreational Hunting Licenses and Permits

Lifetime Option

Florida also sells a Lifetime Gold Sportsman License with the same privileges and no expiration. The price depends on age at purchase:

  • Age 4 or younger: $401.50
  • Ages 5 through 12: $701.50
  • Age 13 or older: $1,001.50

Lifetime buyers receive a credit card-style plastic license.3Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lifetime Licenses For an adult, the $1,001.50 adult tier breaks even against annual purchases in roughly ten years.

Military Rate

Active duty and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Armed Forces Reserve, Florida National Guard, Coast Guard, or Coast Guard Reserve can buy the Gold Sportsman License for $20 per year, provided they are stationed in Florida or claim Florida as their primary residence.4Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Military Gold Sportsman’s License Proof of residency and a current military ID are required. Retired members may use a white Next Generation Uniformed Services ID or a red or blue military ID. The military version is sold at county tax collector’s offices.

Who Qualifies

The Gold Sportsman License is resident-only. The usual proof is a Florida driver’s license or state identification card showing a Florida address verified by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. If you don’t have one, the FWC accepts:5Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. What Qualifies as Florida Residency

  • Florida military orders, for active-duty personnel and immediate family stationed in the state
  • A current Florida voter registration card
  • A declaration of domicile from the county clerk’s office
  • A Florida homestead exemption

Landlord certifications are no longer accepted.

Age Exemptions

Florida residents under 16 and residents age 65 or older are exempt from all hunting and fishing license and permit requirements through June 30, 2026. Exempt anglers and hunters still have to follow bag limits, size limits, and seasonal restrictions, and some permits such as the shore-based shark fishing permit apply regardless of age.

What the License Still Doesn’t Cover

The bundle is broad, but a handful of activities need something extra. Missing one of these is the easiest way to end up out of compliance with a Gold Sportsman License in your pocket.

Federal Duck Stamp

The Florida Waterfowl Permit is in the bundle, but federal law separately requires every waterfowl hunter age 16 or older to carry a signed Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, usually called the Duck Stamp.6U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Buy a Duck Stamp or Electronic Duck Stamp The 2025–2026 stamp costs $25 and is sold through the U.S. Postal Service and approved electronic retailers.7USPS. Spectacled Eiders 2025-2026 Federal Duck Stamps

Tarpon Tag

Landing a tarpon requires a separate $51.50 annual tag with no license-based exemptions. Tags are only sold at county tax collector’s offices, not online or through retail agents.8Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Saltwater Recreational Licenses and Permits Catch-and-release tarpon fishing doesn’t require the tag.

Alligator Harvest

Alligator hunting runs on its own system: an alligator trapping license, a statewide alligator harvest permit, and two CITES hide validation tags, totaling $272 for Florida residents. Permits go out through a random drawing held in several phases each spring, applicants must be at least 18, and roughly 7,000 permits are issued statewide each year.9Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Quota and Limited-Entry Hunts

The Wildlife Management Area Permit in the bundle gets you onto public land in general, but specific high-demand hunts on certain management areas are limited through quota permits awarded by random drawing. A general gun quota permit, for example, is required for designated hunts on select areas.10Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. General Gun

Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit

Anyone 16 or older fishing for sharks from shore needs a free annual Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit, which requires completing an online educational course and quiz. The same requirement kicks in when fishing from shore with a metal leader longer than four feet, with a fighting belt or harness, or when deploying bait by means other than casting while using a hook 1.5 inches or wider. It applies even to residents 65 and older.

Hunter Safety Course Comes First

Owning the license doesn’t by itself authorize you to hunt. Anyone born on or after June 1, 1975, who is 16 or older, must complete a hunter safety course before buying a hunting license.11Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Hunter Safety and Education A deferral option lets you hunt under the direct supervision of a qualified hunter while you complete the course, which combines online study and in-person instruction and covers firearm safety, wildlife conservation, and outdoor ethics. Anyone born before June 1, 1975, is exempt from the course requirement.

Penalties for Going Without

Hunting or fishing without a required license or permit is a Level One violation under Florida law, with penalties that climb for repeats:

  • First offense: a $50 civil penalty plus the cost of the license or permit you should have had. You can also buy the license after the fact, show proof, and pay only the $50 penalty.
  • Second offense within 36 months: a $250 civil penalty plus the cost of the license, or $250 if you purchase the license afterward and provide proof.
  • Failure to pay or appear in court turns the violation into a second-degree misdemeanor.

Hunting or fishing while your license is suspended or revoked is far more serious. That’s a Level Three violation carrying a mandatory $1,000 fine and a five-year suspension of all hunting and fishing privileges.14The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 379.401 – Penalties and Violations
