Florida Law Enforcement Bonus: Eligibility, Payment, and 2026 Deadline

The Florida law enforcement bonus is a one-time payment of up to $5,000, after taxes, for newly hired full-time officers at a Florida criminal justice agency. The state issues a gross-up check of roughly $6,694 so that about $5,000 lands in your pocket once FICA withholdings come out.1FloridaCommerce. Who Counts as a Newly Employed Officer

The statute defines a “newly employed officer” as someone who begins full-time work as a certified law enforcement officer with a Florida criminal justice agency on or after July 1, 2022, and who has never previously served as a law enforcement officer in Florida.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 445.08 – Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program Three groups fit that description: Florida residents entering policing for the first time, officers moving in from another state, and people who held a different Florida criminal justice role but never worked as a sworn law enforcement officer.

Former correctional officers can qualify. Florida treats “law enforcement officer” and “correctional officer” as separate classifications, with different primary duties.3Florida Senate. Florida Code 943.10 – Definitions Years spent working inside a Florida prison do not disqualify you from being “newly employed” on the law enforcement side.

Part-time positions do not count. The job must be full-time with an agency that has constitutional or statutory authority to employ law enforcement officers, which covers municipal police departments, county sheriff’s offices, and state-level agencies.3Florida Senate. Florida Code 943.10 – Definitions You also must hold active certification from the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission before any payment can issue.2Florida Senate. Moving to Florida From Another State

Experienced officers from out of state do not have to repeat an entire Florida basic recruit academy. The Equivalency of Training process lets you skip the full academy if you have at least one year of full-time sworn experience, training comparable to Florida’s basic recruit curriculum, and no more than an eight-year gap since your last sworn position.4Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Equivalency of Training

Once your equivalency form is approved, you have one year to demonstrate proficiency in high-liability areas and pass the Florida state certification exam. Your hiring agency or training center handles the paperwork. After certification, you are eligible for the bonus on the same terms as any other newly employed officer.4Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Equivalency of Training

How You Actually Get Paid

You do not apply yourself. Your employing agency submits the request to FloridaCommerce through the state’s reporting system, using your Social Security number, hire date, and Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certification number.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 445.08 – Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program Before the agency files, confirm that your hire date and certification details match the Commission’s records exactly. Mismatches are the usual reason payments stall.

Once approved, FloridaCommerce mails a physical check to the address on file. The payment is taxable supplemental income and will show up on your W-2. Florida has no state income tax, but depending on your total earnings for the year, you may owe additional federal income tax beyond the FICA amount the state already covered.

The statute authorizes up to $5,000 per eligible officer, and payments can be prorated if demand outruns the available appropriation in a given fiscal year.2Florida Senate. The Two-Year Service Commitment

Taking the bonus binds you to two years of full-time law enforcement work in Florida. The clock starts on the date you obtained your certification, not your hire date, which matters because certification sometimes lands after your first day on the job.2Florida Senate. Two useful details. You can satisfy the two years at more than one agency; if you switch departments, the clock keeps running as long as you stay in a full-time sworn role in Florida. And a break in service of up to 180 calendar days does not reset the clock. A gap longer than 180 days does, and the retention requirement is no longer considered met.2Florida Senate. When You Have to Pay It Back

Leaving law enforcement before your two years are up generally triggers reimbursement. The exact repayment method follows FloridaCommerce’s annual plan for the program rather than a fixed statutory amount.2Florida Senate. There is one carve-out. Repayment is not required if your agency discharges you for a reason other than misconduct, as reflected in the affidavit of separation your former employer files with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. A layoff or a performance-related termination that does not rise to misconduct should not create a debt. A voluntary resignation or a firing for misconduct does.2Florida Senate. The July 1, 2026 Deadline

The program is scheduled to sunset on July 1, 2026. Without legislative action, no new bonus payments will be authorized after that date.2Florida Senate. Florida Code 445.08 – Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program Officers who already received the bonus stay bound by the two-year retention and repayment terms whether or not the program itself continues. If the bonus is part of your reason for pursuing a Florida badge, the window to be hired, certified, and processed is closing.
