Florida License Change of Address: 30-Day Rule and MyDMV Portal

If you’ve moved anywhere inside Florida, you have 30 calendar days to complete a Florida license change of address, and the fastest way to do it is through the DHSMV’s MyDMV Portal. The update itself is free; ordering a new physical card that shows the new address is optional and costs $25. Miss the 30-day window and you’re looking at a $30 nonmoving violation.

The 30-Day Deadline and What Happens If You Miss It

Florida Statute 322.19 is more demanding than a simple notification rule. It requires you to “obtain a replacement license or card that reflects the change” within 30 days of moving.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status In practice, the DHSMV treats an address change made through its online portal or at a local office as satisfying the statute, even if you don’t order a new physical card.

Blow past 30 days and it’s a nonmoving traffic violation carrying a $30 fine under Florida Statute 318.18.2The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 318.18 – Amount of Penalties It doesn’t add points to your record, but it’s the kind of thing you don’t want to learn about during a traffic stop.

Documents You’ll Need

You need two documents from different sources showing your name and new Florida residential address. Printouts and faxes are fine.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen Have your current Florida license number and date of birth ready to pull up your record.

Accepted proofs include:

  • A deed, mortgage document, monthly mortgage statement, or current residential lease
  • A water, gas, electric, cell phone, or cable bill dated within the last 60 days
  • A homeowner’s or auto insurance policy or bill dated within the last 60 days
  • A bank, credit card, or investment account statement dated within the last 60 days
  • A Florida vehicle registration or title
  • A Florida voter registration card

The 60-day freshness rule on bills and statements is where people trip up most. A bank statement from three months ago won’t count, even if the address on it is right.3Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen

If the Documents Aren’t in Your Name

Living with a spouse, parent, or partner and nothing comes in your name? The person whose name is on the household documents can complete a Certification of Address affidavit (HSMV Form 71120). They provide one household document such as a deed or lease in their name, one supporting document such as a utility bill, and the signed affidavit stating that you live there.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Three Ways to Make the Change

Online Through the MyDMV Portal

This is the fastest route. The DHSMV directs address changes to its MyDMV Portal, where you enter your license number, date of birth, and new address.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Name and Address Changes The state record updates immediately and you’ll get a confirmation receipt. If you want a new physical card mailed to you, you can add that to the same transaction for $25 plus a $2 non-refundable online convenience fee.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. GoRenew

In Person at a Local Office

Walk into any Florida Driver License Office or a County Tax Collector’s office that handles licensing. Bring your two proofs of address so staff can verify them. A replacement card ordered in person is $25, and tax collector offices may add up to a $6.25 service charge.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees

By Mail

The statute allows a written request listing your old address, new address, and license number.8Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status In practice, the DHSMV reserves this for active-duty military members and dependents stationed out of state. Processing takes much longer than the other options, so send it well before the 30-day window closes.

One boundary worth knowing: if you originally established your identity using certain document types referenced under Florida Statute 322.08, you cannot change your address online or by mail. You have to appear in person and present the same category of document again.8Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status

Do You Need a New Physical Card?

Here’s where most of the confusion lives. Changing your address in the DHSMV database doesn’t automatically produce a new card. The state record updates right away and the confirmation receipt documents the change, but the card in your wallet will still show the old address unless you pay for a replacement.

  • Online convenience fee: $2 non-refundable6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. GoRenew
  • Tax collector service charge: up to $6.25 at tax collector offices7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees
  • Replacement ID card: $25

If you skip the new card, your old one is still physically valid. An officer who runs your license during a stop will see the updated address in the system. Carrying the confirmation receipt with the old card bridges the gap until you decide whether the new plastic is worth paying for.

Your Vehicle Registration Is a Separate Update

The DHSMV is explicit: the 30-day deadline applies to both your driver license and your vehicle title and registration.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Name and Address Changes Updating the license does not update the registration.

The new address does flow automatically to an electronic title when you change your license. If you hold a paper title, it will still show the old address until you apply for a new one using HSMV Form 82040. The registration certificate is its own update, through HSMV Form 82101.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Name and Address Changes Handle the license first, then the vehicle paperwork.

Voter Registration, Insurance, and REAL ID

Under federal law, a driver license address change also updates your voter registration for federal elections, unless you specifically indicate the change isn’t for voter registration purposes.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. Title 52 Chapter 205 – National Voter Registration If an election is close, confirm with your county Supervisor of Elections after you file the license update.

Auto insurance is worth a separate call. Premiums are partly based on where the car is parked overnight, so a move between ZIP codes can shift your rate. Notify your insurer promptly so your coverage reflects where you actually live.

Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, and a REAL ID-compliant license or another approved ID is now required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your Florida license already shows a gold star in the upper right corner, a simple address change keeps that status intact. If it doesn’t, ordering a replacement card with the new address is a reasonable moment to upgrade, but you’ll need to visit an office in person with the full REAL ID document set: proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of Florida residential address.
