Florida REAL ID: Required Documents, Fees, and How to Apply

A Florida REAL ID is a driver license or identification card that meets the federal security standards of the REAL ID Act of 2005, marked by a gold star in the upper right corner. Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies no longer accept a standard Florida license without that star for boarding domestic flights, entering certain federal buildings, or accessing nuclear power plants.1Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Florida has issued compliant cards since January 1, 2010, so if you renewed or replaced your license after that date and brought the right paperwork, you may already have one.

How to Check Your Current Card

Look at the upper right corner of your Florida driver license or ID. A gold star means it’s REAL ID compliant.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID No star, and the card will say “Not for Federal Identification” on its face. That wording is your signal that the card won’t get you through a TSA checkpoint on its own.

Do You Actually Need One?

The REAL ID Act covers three official purposes: boarding a federally regulated commercial aircraft, accessing certain federal facilities, and entering nuclear power plants.3Transportation Security Administration. About REAL ID For most Floridians, domestic air travel is the one that matters. Children under 18 don’t need identification for domestic flights, so this is an adult concern.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

The upgrade is not the only way to fly. TSA also accepts:

  • A U.S. passport or passport card
  • A U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs
  • A DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
  • A permanent resident card
  • A Transportation Worker Identification Credential
  • A Veteran Health Identification Card
  • A foreign passport4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

If you already carry a valid passport and don’t visit federal buildings, the star is optional. Upgrading makes sense mainly if you want one wallet card that handles everything.

Documents to Bring

Paperwork trips people up more than anything else. Florida asks for documents in three categories, and every item must be an original or certified copy. Photocopies get rejected at the counter.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring

Proof of Identity and Legal Presence

One document showing who you are and that you are lawfully in the United States. Common choices are a U.S. birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or a certificate of naturalization. The birth certificate must be an original or a certified copy from the vital records office. The decorative hospital certificate with the footprints doesn’t count.

Proof of Social Security Number

One document showing your full Social Security number. Your Social Security card is the simplest option. If you’ve lost it, a W-2, a 1099, or a pay stub showing your full number and legal name will also work.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring

Two Proofs of Florida Residential Address

Two separate documents showing where you live in Florida. Acceptable options include utility bills (water, electric, gas, or cell phone), a bank or credit card statement, a Florida voter registration card, a Florida vehicle registration, a lease agreement, a mortgage statement, or government correspondence. Utility bills, pay stubs, and financial statements must be dated within the last 30 days. A voter registration card or vehicle registration can be older as long as it shows your current address.

Name Change Documentation

If your name today differs from what’s on your birth certificate, you need paperwork that connects the two. A marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing both your former and current names handles it in one step. If your name changed more than once and no single document bridges the gap, bring the full chain covering every change.5Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring This is the requirement that surprises people most often, especially when a prior marriage certificate is buried in storage. Find it before your appointment.

How to Apply

Your first REAL ID has to be obtained in person at a Florida DHSMV service center or a county tax collector’s office that offers driver license services.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. REAL ID FLHSMV recommends booking an appointment through its website, though some offices take walk-ins. Appointments save significant wait time now that enforcement has increased demand.

At the visit, staff review your documents, scan them into state records, and take a new photograph. You leave with a paper temporary license that’s valid while the permanent card is printed and mailed. The plastic card with the gold star typically arrives at your home address within 7 to 10 business days.

Fees

Upgrading to a REAL ID doesn’t add a surcharge to the normal license fee. You pay the same amount either way:

  • Class E driver license (original or renewal): $48.00
  • Identification card (original, renewal, or replacement): $25.00

If you apply at a county tax collector’s office rather than a state-run DHSMV center, expect an additional $6.25 service fee. Veterans who have previously provided proof of veteran status to FLHSMV are exempt from that surcharge.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees Offices accept credit cards, debit cards, checks, and cash.

How Long It Stays Valid

A Florida driver license lasts eight years for most adults. If you are 80 or older, the validity period drops to six years.7Online Sunshine. Florida Statutes 322.18 – Expiration of Licenses Noncitizens with temporary immigration status receive a license tied to their authorized stay, expiring either one year from issuance or when their immigration documents expire, whichever comes first. When your card expires, you’ll go through the renewal process and reverify documents to keep the REAL ID designation.

What About the Florida Mobile Driver License?

Florida offers a digital license through the Florida Smart ID app, but as of early 2026, TSA doesn’t accept it at airport checkpoints. TSA keeps a list of participating states whose mobile licenses work at security, and Florida isn’t on it.8Transportation Security Administration. Participating States and Eligible Digital IDs TSA advises carrying a physical ID whenever you fly. The digital version may work for other purposes like traffic stops, but don’t rely on it at the airport.
