A speeding ticket in a Florida school zone costs double what the same violation would cost on a regular road. Florida school zone speed limit fines start at $50 for going just a few miles per hour over and climb to $500 in base fines for driving 30 mph or more above the posted limit, before court costs and surcharges push the real out-of-pocket total higher. An officer-issued ticket also adds points to your license; a camera-issued ticket does not.
When the Reduced Limit Is Actually in Effect
School zone limits in Florida run between 15 and 20 mph, but they are not active all day. Under Section 316.1895, the reduced limit applies from 30 minutes before students begin arriving (including for a scheduled breakfast program), throughout arrival and departure periods, and for 30 minutes after students leave.1Florida Senate. Signs must show when the limit is active by listing specific hours, saying “When Children Are Present,” or flashing.2Federal Highway Administration. MUTCD Part 7 Traffic Control for School Areas A flashing beacon that is dark means the school zone limit is not in force. This matters for the fine: if the zone was not active when you were stopped, the doubled fine should not apply.
Doubled Fines by Speed Over the Limit
Florida Statute 318.18 doubles the base speeding fine for any violation in a school zone or school crossing. Even 1 to 5 mph over, which is usually a warning elsewhere, becomes a $50 ticket. The statutory base fines are:3Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 318.18 – Amount of Penalties
- 1–5 mph over: $50
- 6–9 mph over: $50
- 10–14 mph over: $200
- 15–19 mph over: $300
- 20–29 mph over: $350
- 30 mph or more over: $500, plus a mandatory court hearing
What You Actually Pay
Those are base fines only. Every county adds court costs, technology surcharges, and other fees that roughly double the amount again. A driver cited for 10 to 14 mph over the school zone limit should realistically expect around $300 total. Someone in the 15 to 19 mph range could face roughly $400. The exact figure depends on the county’s fee schedule.
Points on Your License
An officer-issued school zone speeding ticket adds points to your Florida driving record. A standard speeding violation is 3 points. Anything clocked at more than 50 mph over the posted limit is 4 points.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Points and Point Suspensions Points stack up, and hitting these thresholds triggers a suspension:
- 12 points in 12 months: 30-day suspension
- 18 points in 18 months: 3-month suspension
- 24 points in 36 months: 1-year suspension
Insurers see the points too. Most run license checks at renewal, and a single 3-point school zone ticket can move your premium. Underwriters tend to flag school zone violations because the doubled fine signals the location’s severity.
Traffic School to Keep Points Off Your Record
If you do not hold a commercial driver’s license, Section 318.14(9) lets you elect a state-approved basic driver improvement course instead of taking the ticket on your record. Complete the course and adjudication is withheld, no points are assessed, and your base fine is reduced by 9 percent.5The Florida Legislature. There are limits. You can only elect once every 12 months and no more than five times in your lifetime. You must elect within 30 days of the citation and pay the fine and fees within that same 30 days. Miss the deadline and you lose the option, and your license can be suspended for nonpayment.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement Schools Traffic school is not available if you were cited for 30 mph or more over the limit, because that violation requires a court appearance.
Camera-Issued Tickets Work Differently
Since 2023, Section 316.1896 has allowed counties and cities to install speed cameras in school zones. Cameras capture vehicles going more than 10 mph over the posted school zone limit during school hours and mail a notice of violation to the registered owner.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. A camera violation is a flat $100 fine, split between the local government ($77), the state General Revenue Fund ($20), and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Trust Fund ($3).8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Contesting a School Zone Ticket
You have 30 days from the citation date to either pay or request a hearing.5The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 318.14 – Noncriminal Traffic Infractions Hearings are requested through the clerk of the county court where the ticket was written. School zone speeding is a noncriminal traffic infraction, so you are not facing criminal charges, but the state still has to prove the violation.
The most common defense attacks the speed reading. Under Section 316.1906, radar evidence is inadmissible unless the device was properly calibrated and tested. If the officer cannot produce calibration records, or the device was outside its testing schedule, the reading can be excluded. You can also argue that the school zone was not properly signed, that the reduced limit was not actually in effect at the time, or that the officer identified the wrong vehicle.
Camera violations follow a separate track. You can contest them through an administrative hearing rather than county court. Because there are no points at stake, many drivers pay the $100 rather than take time off to fight.
When It Escalates to Reckless Driving
Florida does not automatically upgrade a school zone ticket to a criminal charge at any particular speed.10The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.183 – Unlawful Speed An officer can, however, charge reckless driving under Section 316.192 if your speed shows “willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property,” and a school zone full of children makes that call much more likely than an empty highway.
Reckless driving is a criminal misdemeanor. A first conviction carries up to 90 days in jail and a fine of $25 to $500. A second offense increases the maximum to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Reckless driving that causes property damage or injury becomes a first-degree misdemeanor with stiffer penalties.11The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 316.192 – Reckless Driving
CDL Holders
Commercial drivers face harsher consequences and cannot use traffic school. Federal regulations at 49 CFR 383.51 treat speeding 15 mph or more over the posted limit in a commercial motor vehicle as a serious traffic violation. A second serious violation within three years triggers a 60-day CDL disqualification, and a third within three years means 120 days off the road. Those disqualifications apply no matter which state wrote the ticket. Because CDL holders cannot elect the driver improvement course, every school zone ticket sticks to the record with full points.
Out-of-State Drivers
A Florida school zone ticket follows you home. Florida has belonged to the Driver License Compact since 1967, so the conviction is reported to your home state, which then applies its own points and insurance treatment as if the offense happened there.12National Center for Interstate Compacts.
