Florida State Trooper Requirements and Disqualifiers: Pathways, Tests, and Pay

To become a Florida state trooper you must be at least 19 years old, a U.S. citizen with a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a valid Florida driver’s license, and satisfy one of four education or experience pathways set by the Florida Highway Patrol. From there, Florida state trooper requirements include a written exam, a timed physical abilities test, a polygraph, a background investigation, medical and psychological evaluations, and a 29-week training academy.1Florida Legislature. Baseline Eligibility

Florida Statute 943.13 sets the floor for every law enforcement officer in the state. You must be 19 or older at the time of application, with no maximum age. U.S. citizenship is required. A high school diploma or recognized equivalent is the minimum educational threshold.1Florida Legislature. Florida Code 943.13 – Officers Minimum Qualifications for Employment or Appointment

You also need a valid Florida driver’s license that is not suspended, canceled, or revoked, and any outstanding traffic fines in any state must be paid before you apply.2Be A Trooper. The Four Qualifying Pathways

Beyond the high school diploma, FHP requires every applicant to meet at least one of four pathways:4Be A Trooper. Requirements

  • One year of full-time sworn or non-sworn law enforcement experience in any jurisdiction.
  • Two years of active, continuous U.S. military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Two years of work experience involving regular interaction with the public, such as customer service, retail, or similar roles.
  • At least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours from an accredited college or university.

You only need one. The public contact pathway is broader than most applicants realize: two years at a front desk, a retail counter, or a call center can qualify you. Just know that FHP gives preference to candidates with an associate’s degree, two years of military service, or a year of law enforcement experience, so meeting only the bare minimum puts you at a competitive disadvantage.3Be A Trooper. Physical, Vision, and Appearance Standards

You must pass a physical examination from a licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice registered nurse using criteria set by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.1Florida Legislature. Florida Code 943.13 – Officers Minimum Qualifications for Employment or Appointment

Vision must be correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye, with normal color perception and a minimum field of vision of 140 degrees. Any visual condition that prevents performing essential duties and cannot be reasonably accommodated will disqualify you.4Be A Trooper. Requirements

Tattoos are regulated by a detailed FHP policy. No tattoos are permitted on the face, neck, head, or hands below the wrist bone. Elsewhere on the body, no tattoo may be visible in any FHP uniform; troopers with arm or wrist tattoos that would show in a short-sleeve uniform must wear the long-sleeve Class A or authorized Class C uniform at all times. Obscene, gang-related, or offensive tattoos are prohibited regardless of location.5Florida Highway Patrol Association. Florida Highway Patrol Tattoo and Body Modification Policy Agreement

FHP has historically required applicants to be tobacco-free for at least one year before applying. The timeframe can shift between hiring cycles, so confirm the current policy with your recruiter.

What Will Disqualify You

Several items will end your candidacy before anything else matters. Reviewing them now saves months of effort.

Criminal History

A felony conviction permanently disqualifies you. So does any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement. This covers guilty pleas, nolo contendere pleas, and findings of guilt even when the court withheld adjudication or suspended the sentence. A dishonorable discharge from the U.S. military is treated the same way.1Florida Legislature. Florida Code 943.13 – Officers Minimum Qualifications for Employment or Appointment

Driving Record

A DUI conviction is grounds for disqualification. Other traffic violations are weighed on seriousness and frequency rather than being automatic rejections, but a pattern of reckless driving or multiple suspensions will surface in the background investigation.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Dishonesty on the Application

Florida law requires every officer to show good moral character, determined through a background investigation.1Florida Legislature. Florida Code 943.13 – Officers Minimum Qualifications for Employment or Appointment Lying on your application, omitting a prior employer, or being caught in a lie during the polygraph can disqualify you even if you have no criminal record. Leaving information out may cause your file to be placed inactive or disqualified entirely.2Be A Trooper. FAQs

The Selection Process

From application to academy start, expect four to eight months.3Be A Trooper. State Trooper Applications go through the People First state employment portal. After that, candidates move through a sequence of tests that progressively thin the pool.

Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test

The CJBAT is a standardized Pearson VUE exam that measures baseline competencies for law enforcement work. It has 97 questions across three separately timed sections covering behavioral attributes, memorization, and written comprehension, written expression, deductive reasoning, and inductive reasoning. You get 90 minutes total.7Pearson VUE. Law Enforcement – FDLE Basic Abilities Test Exam Schedule it early; seat availability tightens during active recruitment cycles.

Physical Abilities Test

The PAT is a continuous-flow obstacle course of 11 events run back to back with no rest, and you must finish in 7 minutes and 30 seconds. The events simulate real field demands: a 300-yard run carrying a 15-pound go-bag, a wall climb, dragging a 150-pound dummy 50 feet, pushing a 180-pound sled, battle ropes, hurdles, a low crawl, and dry-firing a weapon with each hand.8Be A Trooper. Physical Abilities Test Train for the specific events rather than relying on general fitness.

Polygraph and Background Investigation

The polygraph covers your education, employment, finances, drug and alcohol use, and criminal behavior, including theft from prior employers and falsification of application information. Failing it disqualifies you, and you must wait a year before reapplying.

The background investigation goes further. Investigators verify your employment history, interview references and former supervisors, review your financial situation, and look for patterns that conflict with the moral character standard. This stage is where most otherwise-qualified candidates wash out, usually because something in the application does not match what investigators find.

Medical and Psychological Evaluations

The final steps are a comprehensive medical evaluation and a psychological assessment. Both must confirm you are fit for the job before any offer is made.

Documents to Have Ready

  • DD-214 (Member 4 copy) if you are qualifying on the military pathway.

The Training Academy

Recruits who do not already hold a valid Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certificate attend the 29-week Basic Recruit Class at the FHP Training Academy. Those who already hold a valid CJSTC certificate attend the Transitional Recruit Class, which runs about eight weeks.2Be A Trooper. FAQs

Recruits are full-time state employees from day one, so you earn salary and benefits starting the day you arrive.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What the Job Pays

FHP troopers earn a minimum base salary of $60,000 per year under the most recent posted pay schedules. Troopers in designated high-cost counties receive geographic differentials: roughly $65,000 annually in metro areas including Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and several dozen other counties, and approximately $68,000 in Monroe County.10State of Florida Careers. Troopers participate in the Florida Retirement System’s Special Risk Class, which accrues at 3% per year of creditable service for service after July 1, 1974, compared to 1.6% for regular state employees.11MyFRS.
