Results show the certificate’s current status (active, expired, or suspended), the effective and expiration dates, and every subject area the educator is authorized to teach.
School administrators use this during hiring, parents use it to check a teacher’s qualifications, and educators use it to confirm their own records are accurate. If a search returns nothing, the person either was never certified in Florida or may be listed under a different name than the one you tried. Search variations of the name before assuming there’s no record.
Checking for Disciplinary Actions
The standard lookup shows whether a license is active or suspended, but it doesn’t spell out misconduct history. For that, the DOE keeps a separate database at MyFloridaTeacher.com, where you can search by name to see whether any disciplinary action has been taken against a Florida educator’s certificate.4Florida Department of Education. The Education Practices Commission can impose several kinds of penalties when an educator violates professional conduct standards or the law:
- Suspension for up to five years, barring the educator from teaching or any student-contact role at a public school.
- Revocation for up to ten years, after which the educator may apply for reinstatement.
- Permanent revocation, a lifetime ban from holding a Florida educator certificate.
- Administrative fine of up to $2,000 per violation.
- Probation, letting the educator keep working under conditions set by the commission, including additional coursework and annual supervisor reports.
- Written reprimand placed in the educator’s certification file.

What a Florida Certification Number Looks Like
Every Florida educator certification number is a 10-digit numeric code. The ranges aren’t random; each corresponds to a different license category. Regular educator certificate numbers fall between 0000000001 and 6001999999. Speech-language license numbers sit in the 6002000001–6002999999 range, athletic coaching licenses use 6003000001–6003999999, and exchange teacher licenses run from 6004000001 to 6004999999.2Florida Department of Education. You may also run across placeholder codes inside school district reporting systems. 0000000000 means the employee has no assigned certificate number, and 7777777777 is a district-issued number for non-degreed career and technical education instructors. These aren’t real certification numbers issued by the Bureau; they’re internal reporting conventions used by districts. If a number someone gave you falls outside the ranges above or matches one of these placeholders, it won’t return a match in the public lookup.
Reading the Status and Certificate Type
The status field will show “active” only when the certificate hasn’t expired and all requirements are current. An expired certificate doesn’t disappear from the system; it just shows an expired status.
Florida issues two main types of educator certificates, and the certification number links to whichever type the person holds.
Professional Certificate
The Professional Certificate is Florida’s highest educator credential. It states whether the applicant is eligible for a Temporary or Professional Certificate and lists exactly which requirements remain.
