Missouri Form MO-FPT is the food pantry tax credit certificate that a qualifying food pantry, homeless shelter, or soup kitchen issues to you after you donate cash or food. You don’t fill it out yourself. The organization completes it, mails it to you (usually in January), and you attach it to your Missouri income tax return along with Form MO-TC to claim a credit worth 50% of your donation.1Missouri Department of Revenue. What the Credit Is Worth
Take the total value of your qualifying donations and cut it in half. That’s your credit, subject to two ceilings. It cannot exceed $2,500 per taxpayer in a single tax year, and it cannot exceed your actual Missouri income tax liability for that year. If you owe $1,800 in state tax and your calculated credit comes to $2,000, you get $1,800.1Missouri Department of Revenue. MO-FPT Missouri Tax Credit Form
Unused credit does not carry forward to the next year, and the credit cannot be sold or transferred. It applies only to Missouri state income tax, not to federal tax, sales tax, or local taxes. For married couples filing a combined Missouri return, the $2,500 cap applies per taxpayer, so a couple who both donate could potentially claim up to $5,000 combined.
What Donations Qualify
Cash contributions qualify. So do food donations, provided the food is not past its expiration date on the day it’s donated.1Missouri Department of Revenue. MO-FPT Missouri Tax Credit Form The recipient has to be a food pantry, homeless shelter, or soup kitchen. Other charities don’t count for this credit, even if they’re federally tax-exempt. The organization itself determines the value of any food donation and records that figure on the MO-FPT it issues to you.
If you gave to more than one qualifying organization during the year, each one should send you a separate MO-FPT. Attach all of them to your return. Only the combined total matters for the $2,500 cap.
Getting the Form from the Organization
MO-FPT isn’t something you download from the Department of Revenue. The organization that received your donation prepares and issues it. Most mail these certificates in January for the prior calendar year’s donations. If yours hasn’t arrived by early February, contact the organization and ask for it before the April filing deadline.
When it arrives, check it against your own records. The form lists the organization’s identifying information, a description of what you gave, and the dollar value. If the stated amount doesn’t match your bank statements or receipts, ask the organization to correct it before you file.
Filing the Credit with Your Missouri Return
Two documents go with your Missouri income tax return (Form MO-1040): the MO-FPT certificate from the organization, and Form MO-TC (Miscellaneous Income Tax Credits), where you enter the credit amount on the appropriate line. MO-TC is available on the Missouri Department of Revenue website. Without both, the Department can’t process the credit.
The filing deadline is the same as the standard Missouri income tax deadline, April 15 of the year after the tax year. If you e-file with compatible software, you enter the MO-FPT information in the credits section of your return. Paper filers include the physical MO-FPT and MO-TC with the MO-1040 and mail everything to the address in the MO-1040 instructions.
For questions specific to the credit, the Department of Revenue’s Tax Credit unit is at (573) 751-3220, fax (573) 522-8619, or taxcredit@dor.mo.gov.1Missouri Department of Revenue. MO-FPT Missouri Tax Credit Form
