The Fort Bend County sales tax rate is 8.25% in every incorporated city and in most of the surrounding area. That total is the 6.25% Texas state sales tax plus up to 2% in local taxes. A small number of unincorporated spots pay less, because the local portion depends on which special districts cover the exact address.
How the Rate Is Built
Every taxable sale in Texas starts at 6.25%, the statewide rate that applies uniformly. Local jurisdictions then add their own percentages on top: cities, the Metropolitan Transit Authority, county assistance districts, emergency services districts, and economic development corporations.1Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Sales and Use Tax
State law caps the combined local portion at 2%, so no Texas address pays more than 8.25%.2Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Local Sales and Use Tax Frequently Asked Questions How those two local percentage points are split differs from city to city, but the amount you pay at the register does not.

If you shop at a store inside any of these city limits, you pay 8.25% on taxable goods. Which local entities ultimately receive that money varies, but your total does not change.
Unincorporated Areas Can Be Lower
Outside city limits, the rate depends on which special purpose districts cover the parcel. Fort Bend County has dozens of these, including Emergency Services Districts, County Assistance Districts, and management districts, each imposing local taxes that range from 1% to 2%.8Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Special Purpose District Sales and Use Tax
An address inside Fort Bend County Emergency Services District No. 3 pays a 2% local rate and hits 8.25%. An address covered only by a 1% County Assistance District pays 7.25%. In the rare pocket with no special district at all, only the 6.25% state rate applies.
Mailing addresses mislead here. A Sugar Land postal address does not necessarily sit inside Sugar Land city limits, and district boundaries do not follow ZIP codes. What the 8.25% Does Not Apply To
Several large categories of purchases are exempt from Texas sales tax, which means 0% at the register in Fort Bend County, not a reduced rate.
Groceries
Most food meant for home preparation is tax-free: bread, produce, meat, dairy, and similar staples. Prepared food sold ready to eat, hot food, and soft drinks remain taxable.10Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Grocery and Convenience Stores Coffee beans from the grocery aisle are exempt; a hot cup from the deli counter is not.
Medicine and Medical Supplies
Prescription drugs, including insulin, are exempt. Over-the-counter medications are exempt as long as the FDA requires a Drug Facts panel on the label, which covers most pain relievers, cold medicine, and antacids.11Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Drug Facts Panel The exemption also reaches prosthetic devices, hearing aids, corrective lenses, hospital beds, wound care dressings, diapers, and baby wipes.12Texas Public Law. Texas Tax Code 151.313 – Health Care Supplies Vitamins and dietary supplements are taxable unless they carry a Drug Facts panel.
Agricultural and Timber Purchases
Farmers and ranchers can buy qualifying equipment, feed, and supplies tax-free, but this one takes paperwork. You need an Ag/Timber Number from the Comptroller and have to give the retailer a completed exemption certificate at purchase. Current Ag/Timber Numbers expire December 31, 2027, and renew every four years.13Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Agricultural and Timber Exemptions Farming, ranching, commercial nurseries, and feedlot operations qualify. Horse boarding, pet breeding, and hobby gardening do not.
Three Annual Tax Holidays
Texas suspends sales tax for all buyers on three weekends a year. Emergency preparedness supplies are exempt April 25–27, 2026, with price ceilings depending on the item (generators under $3,000, hurricane shutters and emergency ladders under $300, most other supplies under $75).14Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Online and Out-of-State Purchases
Buying from an out-of-state seller who does not collect Texas sales tax does not make the purchase tax-free. You owe use tax at the same combined rate as your home address, which is 8.25% for most of Fort Bend County. Since 2019, remote sellers with more than $500,000 in annual Texas sales must collect and remit Texas use tax, so most large online retailers already charge the correct rate.17Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Remote Sellers Smaller sellers below that threshold may not collect it, and the obligation falls to you.
If You’re the One Collecting the Tax
Any business selling taxable goods or services in Fort Bend County needs a Texas sales tax permit before its first sale. The permit is free and available through the Comptroller’s online registration.18Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Verifying the right rate is where sellers slip. Because of the overlapping special districts, two storefronts a mile apart in unincorporated Fort Bend County can sit under different local taxing jurisdictions. Check each location against the Comptroller’s rate locator rather than relying on the mailing address, and recheck whenever district boundaries shift.
