Florida Department of Health on TRAIN Florida
The Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Public Health Laboratories offers a medical errors module for the current biennium, listed as Medical Errors FY 2024–2026. It includes a video, transcript, and quiz, and it is available at no charge through the TRAIN Florida learning management system. TRAIN Florida hosts courses from multiple government agencies, and many carry CE credit. Before enrolling, pull the course’s CE Broker tracking number and confirm it is approved for your board.
AHRQ Patient Safety Network
The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality runs PSNet, which offers free interactive learning modules through its WebM&M Spotlight Cases. The important caveat: PSNet modules cover patient safety broadly and may not be specifically approved as a “prevention of medical errors” course by your Florida board. Contact your board or check CE Broker to confirm acceptance before relying on these credits for the medical errors requirement.
Your Employer or Professional Association
Large healthcare systems and professional associations sometimes offer the mandatory course free to their staff or members. If you work for a hospital, ask your education department. Facilities licensed under Chapter 395 can offer an in-house version where up to one hour is tailored to the facility’s own error-prevention protocols, with the other hour covering the general statutory content.

What the Course Must Cover, and Why Free Doesn’t Always Mean Compliant

If you are licensed under the Board of Medicine or the Board of Osteopathic Medicine, your course must also include information on the five most misdiagnosed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by your board.5Online Sunshine. This is the single most common way a free course fails at renewal time. Physicians and osteopathic physicians should confirm the misdiagnosed-conditions component is present before enrolling.
Who This Requirement Applies To
Florida Statute 456.013(7) requires every board under the Department of Health to mandate a two-hour medical errors prevention course as part of biennial renewal. When a profession has no board, the Department imposes the requirement itself. In practice, this covers virtually every licensed healthcare profession in the state, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, physician assistants, and osteopathic physicians.5Online Sunshine. You must complete the course in the 24 months before your renewal date, every renewal cycle. It is not a one-time obligation.
One point that saves confusion: the two hours count toward the total continuing education hours your profession requires. They are not stacked on top.5Online Sunshine. Reporting Your Free Course Through CE Broker
Florida uses CE Broker as the electronic tracking system for CE credits across all licensed healthcare professions. Most approved providers, including the Department of Health, report completions to CE Broker automatically. After finishing the course, log into your CE Broker account and check that the credit appears on your compliance transcript.
If the credit does not appear within a few days, self-report it. Log in, click “Report CE,” select your license, and enter the course details from your certificate: provider name or number, course tracking number, completion date, and hours. If the provider or course does not appear in CE Broker’s search results while you are self-reporting, that is a red flag. It may not be approved for your board. Resolve it before your renewal deadline, not after.
Keep the certificate of completion even after credit posts. If you are selected for a compliance audit, you may need to produce the original documentation.
What a Free Medical Errors Course Does Not Cover
Two other mandatory training obligations overlap enough with the medical errors requirement that practitioners sometimes assume one satisfies the other. It doesn’t.
If you are DEA-registered and authorized to prescribe controlled substances, Florida Statute 456.0301 requires a separate two-hour course on controlled substances prescribing at each biennial renewal. That course covers prescribing standards for opioids, alternatives, nonpharmacological therapies, emergency opioid antagonists, and addiction risks.6Online Sunshine. Separately, the federal Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment (MATE) Act requires all DEA-registered practitioners to complete a one-time eight-hour training on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
