Free pest control CE in California is available through three main channels: manufacturer-sponsored webinars, University of California Statewide IPM Program offerings, and no-cost sessions at industry conferences. The Department of Pesticide Regulation lists every approved course, free or paid, in a single searchable database, and that database is where any serious hunt for no-cost credit should start.1California Department of Pesticide Regulation. How Many Hours You’re Trying to Fill
Most Qualified Applicator License and Qualified Applicator Certificate holders need 20 hours of DPR-approved CE every two-year renewal cycle, with at least 4 of those hours covering pesticide laws and regulations.2Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 3-6511 – Continuing Education Requirements Agricultural Pest Control Advisers need 40 hours per cycle, also with the 4-hour laws-and-regulations minimum.3California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Continuing Education Hours Required for License and Certificate Holders Pest Control Aircraft Pilot certificate holders need 20 hours, including 4 in laws and regulations and 4 in aerial application topics.
A couple of narrower credentials carry much lighter loads. If you hold only category H or subcategory Q under the QAL/QAC program, your requirement drops to 4 or 8 hours respectively, with reduced laws-and-regulations minimums.3California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Two rules affect how aggressively you need to chase free hours. Extra laws-and-regulations hours can count toward your “other” total, but no hours carry over into the next renewal period.4California Department of Pesticide Regulation. If Your License Comes From the Structural Pest Control Board
Termite, general household pest, and fumigation work is licensed by the Structural Pest Control Board, not DPR. SPCB operates on a three-year renewal cycle with its own CE requirements, and SPCB hours are not interchangeable with DPR credit.5Structural Pest Control Board. Continuing Education If that’s your license, use the SPCB’s approved provider list rather than DPR’s database. Some providers hold approvals from both agencies, but you need to verify that for each course.
Using the DPR Course Database
Every CE course must receive DPR approval before it generates valid credit. Providers submit courses at least 30 days before the event, or 60 days for self-paced online courses.6California Department of Pesticide Regulation. How to Sponsor a Continuing Education Course The resulting approved list is public and searchable by course type, date range, location, and provider.1California Department of Pesticide Regulation. To find no-cost options, check the fee or cost information on each listing. Many providers mark their sessions as free. Each listing shows the course title, sponsor, date, and DPR course identification number, and you’ll need that identification number later for your renewal paperwork.
Start early. Free courses fill up, and many run on specific dates rather than on demand. Waiting until November of your expiration year leaves thin options.
Where the Free Hours Actually Come From
Manufacturer and Distributor Webinars
Pesticide manufacturers and distributors regularly sponsor DPR-approved webinars and in-person seminars at no charge. The content focuses on specific products and application techniques, so these sessions usually qualify for “other” hours rather than laws-and-regulations credit. They appear in the DPR database with their approval numbers alongside paid courses.
UC IPM
The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program hosts online courses and webinars on current pest management science and pesticide safety.7UC IPM. Online Training The content is free to access, though UC IPM may charge a fee to issue the DPR-approved certificate of completion that actually generates CE credit. You can learn the material at no cost, but the paperwork DPR will accept at renewal sometimes carries a price.
UC IPM also runs free live webinars through its UC Ag Experts Talk series. Whether a given session carries DPR CE credit varies, so check the event listing before you commit.
Trade Shows and Conferences
Regional and statewide pest control conferences often include DPR-approved sessions. The conference itself may charge admission, but exhibitor-sponsored sessions inside the event are sometimes free and still carry credit. These opportunities tend to cluster in fall and winter, and they’ll appear in the DPR database when they do.
Keep Your Own Records
DPR does not keep a running tally of your hours. After each approved course, get a certificate of completion or verification of attendance from the provider, and keep it. California regulations require you to hold onto those records for at least three years from the course completion date.8Legal Information Institute. California Code of Regulations 3-6513 – Records of Continuing Education Courses
At renewal, you’ll submit Form LIC-141, the Continuing Education Record Renewal Summary, with your renewal application. It asks for each course’s title, sponsor, completion date, and DPR course identification number.4California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Continuing Education Record Renewal Summary A simple spreadsheet kept as you go beats reconstructing two years of attendance from memory.
What Happens If You Fall Short
All required CE hours must be completed by December 31 of your expiration year. There is no grace period.9California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Individual License/Certificate Renewal Application Packet Come up short and you cannot renew. You’ll have to re-examine in laws and regulations and in each category you want to keep, meaning you retest as a new applicant while your license sits expired. That is reason enough to start the free-course search months before the deadline rather than weeks.
