You can get married at the Fresno County Clerk’s office at 1250 Van Ness Avenue for $21 on top of your marriage license, with the clerk providing both an officiant and witnesses if you need them. A public license costs $58 and a confidential one costs $69, and California has no waiting period, so a Fresno County marriage ceremony can happen the same day you pick up the license. Appointments are booked online only.
Booking the Appointment
All marriage license and ceremony appointments are scheduled through the clerk’s online portal. The office does not take appointment requests by phone.1Fresno County Clerk. Online Scheduling When you book, choose the “Marriage License and Ceremony” option if you want the clerk’s office to perform the ceremony that same visit, or just the license option if someone else will officiate later.
Slots fill up around holidays and popular wedding dates, so book a few weeks ahead. Appointments run during standard business hours on weekdays only. You’ll get an online confirmation once your time is set.
What to Bring
Both of you must appear together with valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. You’ll need to give your full legal names, dates of birth, birthplaces, and the full birth names and birthplaces of both sets of parents. Both parties must be at least 18.
Payment is cash or credit/debit card only. The office does not accept checks or $100 bills. Fill the application out carefully the first time, because correcting a registered marriage certificate after the fact is limited to fixing clerical errors.
Public or Confidential License
The public license is the standard option at $58. It requires at least one witness (up to two) to attend the ceremony and sign the license, and the resulting marriage record is public, meaning anyone can request a copy.2Justia Law. California Code Family Code 350-360
The confidential license costs $69 and is available to couples who are both at least 18 and already living together as spouses.3California Legislative Information. California Code Family Code 500 No witness is required, and once the certificate is registered, only the two spouses can obtain copies without a court order.4County of Fresno. Marriage License – County of Fresno The marriage itself is legally identical either way; the difference is privacy and witnesses.
Whichever you choose, the license expires after 90 days. If the ceremony hasn’t happened by then, you’ll have to apply and pay for a new one.5California Department of Public Health. California Marriage License General Information
The Ceremony Itself
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time for paperwork and identity verification.4County of Fresno. Marriage License – County of Fresno The ceremony is brief and takes place in a dedicated ceremony room. You can bring up to six guests, not counting the two of you.
The clerk provides the officiant, and staff can serve as witnesses for a public license at no extra charge. The $21 ceremony fee is paid by cash or card.
A few practical rules: no rice, confetti, or flower petals, and no food or drinks in the ceremony area. The office is a working government building with other customers conducting business nearby, so keep the volume reasonable.
Changing a Name at the Same Time
If you plan to change your middle or last name through the marriage, you have to put it on the license application itself. Under California’s Name Equality Act, either or both spouses can select a new middle or last name drawn from either spouse’s current or birth name, or a combination or hyphenation of those names. First names cannot be changed through this process. Once the certificate is registered with the county recorder, you cannot go back and add or modify a name choice, so decide before you sign.6California Legislative Information. California Code Family Code 306.5 A certified copy of the marriage certificate then serves as your legal proof when you update your driver’s license, Social Security card, and other records.
Getting Certified Copies Afterward
Once the completed license is filed with the Fresno County Recorder, it becomes your marriage certificate. Certified copies are $15 each and can be requested in person or by mail through the Recorder’s office.7County of Fresno. Marriage Certificate – County of Fresno
Mail-in requests take four to six weeks. For in-person pickup, call the Recorder’s office at 559-600-3471 first to confirm the certificate has been registered; otherwise you’ll be turned away. Order at least two copies up front. The Social Security Administration will want one for a name change, and your bank, employer, or passport application will each likely want their own original rather than a photocopy.
If You’d Rather Use Your Own Officiant
You don’t have to use the clerk’s ceremony. California authorizes judges, commissioners, retired judges, and clergy of any religious denomination to solemnize a marriage, and the state also allows anyone to be deputized for a day as a Deputy Commissioner of Marriage so a friend or family member can officiate. Either way, you still have to get your license from the Fresno County Clerk first, and whoever officiates must complete the solemnization section and return the license to the county recorder within 10 days. That return is what makes the marriage official on paper.
