Fulton County Driver’s License Renewal: DDS Centers, Fees, and Documents

If you live in Fulton County, you renew your driver’s license through the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), which handles licensing for the whole state. A standard renewal costs $32 and covers eight years, and you can start as early as 150 days before your expiration date.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms Most drivers can finish the whole thing online or through the DDS 2 GO mobile app in a few minutes. Some have to show up in person at one of the two DDS Customer Service Centers in the county.

Which Renewal Method You Can Use

Three paths are available: online, the DDS 2 GO app, or in person. A mail-in option exists for a narrow group of people living outside the state. Which one you use depends on your citizenship, your current card, and whether anything about you has changed since last time.

Online or Mobile App

You can renew online or through the DDS 2 GO app only if all of these are true:

  • You are a U.S. citizen and Georgia resident, 18 or older.
  • Your current license is REAL ID-compliant, meaning it has a gold or black star in the upper right corner.
  • You are not renewing for the first time.
  • You don’t need to change your name, photo, height, weight, or remove a restriction code such as corrective lenses.
  • If you are 64 or older, you have uploaded an approved Vision Report before starting the renewal.

If you qualify, log in or create an account at the DDS Online Services portal or open DDS 2 GO, confirm your information, and pay the fee.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renew a License or ID

In Person

You have to visit a DDS Customer Service Center if you are renewing for the first time, your license is not REAL ID-compliant and you want to upgrade, your legal name has changed, you need a new photo or updated identifying information, or you are not a U.S. citizen. At the center, you check in at a kiosk and then wait for a service window.3Georgia.gov. Renew a Georgia Driver’s License

Mail

Mail renewal is open only to U.S. citizens who are stationed, working, or attending school outside Georgia, and to dependents living with them. Students and out-of-state workers get one mail renewal, ever. Military members and their dependents are not held to that one-time limit. You request a Mail-In Renewal Packet from DDS and return the completed forms.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Mail-In Renewals

The Two Fulton County DDS Centers

Fulton County has two DDS Customer Service Centers, each with a self-service kiosk on-site:

  • Atlanta: 400 Whitehall Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30303
  • Alpharetta: 11575 Maxwell Road, Alpharetta, GA 30009

Both handle standard renewals and REAL ID upgrades. You can check wait times and schedule an appointment on the DDS website before you go.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Find a Location

Fee and Payment

A regular renewal (Class A, B, C, E, F, or M) is $32 for eight years.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms DDS Customer Service Centers take cash and Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. They do not take checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks. Online and app renewals accept the same card brands.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees/Payments FAQs

Qualified veterans can be exempt from the renewal fee entirely with an approved Certificate of Eligibility (DS-516B) from the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Veteran License

Documents to Bring if You’re Renewing in Person

If you already have a REAL ID-compliant card and nothing has changed, an online or app renewal usually does not require you to present documents again. For an in-person renewal or a first-time REAL ID upgrade, Georgia wants original or certified documents in three categories.8Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID

One proof of identity: an original or certified U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal, an unexpired U.S. passport or passport card, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship.

Proof of your Social Security number. DDS verifies it electronically. If that fails, bring your Social Security card, a W-2 or 1099, a pay stub, or a federal or state tax return showing the full number.

Two proofs of Georgia residency from separate sources showing your name and current residential address. P.O. boxes don’t count. Accepted documents include a mortgage statement, lease, property tax bill, utility bill, bank statement, postmarked U.S. mail from the last six months, a voter registration card, or a tax return.

Everyone visiting a DDS center also has to complete the License/ID/Permit Form in advance through DDS Online Services or DDS 2 GO. It is not available on paper at the centers. The form collects your full legal name, address, emergency contacts, and organ donor preference, and the name and address must match your supporting documents exactly.9Georgia Department of Driver Services. Vision Rule for Drivers 64 and Older

If you are 64 or older, Georgia requires an approved vision report on file before you can renew. Renewing online means uploading a completed Vision Report Form (DDS-MR-274) through your DDS Online Services account before the system will process the renewal. A licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist has to complete the form, and it must be dated within the last two years. If you renew in person, the vision screening happens at the center during your visit.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID: Why It Matters at Renewal

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable federal ID (passport, passport card, military ID) is required to board domestic commercial flights and enter certain federal facilities.10Transportation Security Administration. TSA to Highlight REAL ID Enforcement Deadline of May 7, 2025 Check your current card. If there’s a gold or black star in the upper right corner, you’re already compliant and your renewal can be done online if you otherwise qualify. If there’s no star, the next renewal is the time to upgrade, and that upgrade has to be done in person with the identity, SSN, and residency documents above.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. What You Drive On While You Wait

Once you finish the renewal, you get a temporary license. In person, you walk out with a paper interim. Online or through the app, you can download and print a temporary from your DDS Online Services account. Your permanent card arrives by mail, and DDS says to allow up to 45 days.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renew a License or ID If it hasn’t shown up after that, contact DDS. Keep the temporary with you while driving. One caution if you plan to fly: TSA does not accept temporary paper licenses at airport security, so travel with a passport or other accepted federal ID until the card arrives.

If You Let It Expire

Georgia offers a narrow safety net. If your license has been expired fewer than 31 days and you appear in court holding a license that would have been valid at the time of the stop, you are not guilty of the offense.11Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-20 – License Required; Surrender of Prior Licenses; Local Licenses Prohibited You still get pulled over, cited, and put through a court date.

Past 31 days, driving on an expired license is a misdemeanor. A first conviction within five years carries two days to twelve months in jail and a $500 to $1,000 fine. A second or third conviction within five years is a high and aggravated misdemeanor with ten days to twelve months in jail and a $1,000 to $2,500 fine. A fourth or later conviction is a felony with one to five years in prison and a $2,500 to $5,000 fine.12Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-121 – Driving While License Suspended

Let it go two years or more and you cannot simply renew. DDS will require you to retake the road signs test, the road rules knowledge exam, the road skills driving test, and a vision exam before issuing a new license.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renew a License or ID

Non-Citizens

Non-citizens cannot renew online or by mail. Every renewal has to be done in person at a DDS Customer Service Center. If your limited-term license has expired or will expire within 30 days and you have applied for but not yet received an extension of your immigration status, DDS can issue a temporary driving permit valid for 120 days. No further permits are issued after that window closes.13Legal Information Institute. Ga. Comp. R. and Regs. R. 375-3-2-.01 – Term of Drivers License, Permit, and Identification Card

Military and Veterans

Active-duty service members whose Georgia license expired while stationed outside the state get a six-month grace period after discharge or reassignment back to Georgia. During those six months, you can legally drive on the expired license, as long as you carry a copy of your official military orders or a written verification from your commanding officer.14Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-37 – Expiration of Active Duty Service

Military members and their dependents stationed outside Georgia can also renew by mail through the DDS Mail-In Renewal Packet, with no one-time limit.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Mail-In Renewals Veterans with honorable or medical discharges can apply for a veteran designation on their license using their DD-214 (Member Copy 4) or an approved DS-516B from the Georgia Department of Veterans Service. Those with an approved DS-516B may receive their license and renewals at no cost.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Veteran License
