Georgia car inspection requirements are narrower than in most states: there is no safety inspection for passenger vehicles anywhere in Georgia, and an annual emissions test is only required if you register your car in one of 13 metro Atlanta counties. Outside those counties, nothing is required. Inside them, you need a passing emissions test before you can renew your registration each year.
The 13 Counties That Require Emissions Testing
The emissions program applies only to vehicles registered in Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale counties.1Environmental Protection Division. Which Vehicles Need a Test
For the 2026 registration period, the program covers gasoline-powered cars and light-duty trucks from model years 2002 through 2023 with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less.2Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Several categories are exempt even inside the 13 counties:
- The three most recent model years. For 2026 registration, that means 2024 and newer.
- Vehicles 25 model years old or older. For 2026, that’s 2001 and earlier.
- Diesel vehicles, regardless of age or weight.
- Motorcycles, RVs, and motor homes.
- Vehicles over 8,500 pounds GVWR.
- Fully electric vehicles and those running exclusively on hydrogen, natural gas, or propane.
The model-year window shifts every year, so a car that was exempt as “too new” last cycle can move into the testing range this cycle.3Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Before You Test
Hybrids Still Have to Test
Hybrids catch people out. A Prius, Insight, or Escape Hybrid still has a gasoline engine, so it goes through the standard test.4Georgia’s Clean Air Force. When to Get Tested
Registration renewals in Georgia are due during your birthday month.5Georgia.gov. Renew Vehicle Registration Georgia’s Clean Air Force recommends testing four to six weeks ahead of that deadline.3Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Before You Test The buffer matters. If the vehicle fails, you need room to get repairs done and retest before the registration lapses.

What the Test Checks and What It Costs
The inspection is quick. Every vehicle gets three checks: an OBD-II scan, where the inspector plugs into the car’s diagnostic port and reads the emissions history from the computer; a fuel cap check, since a missing or cracked cap can fail the test on its own; and a visual look at the catalytic converter to confirm it hasn’t been removed or tampered with.3Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Nothing else is inspected. Brakes, tires, lights, steering — none of that is part of any state check, because Georgia doesn’t run a safety inspection program for passenger cars.
Stations set their own price within a state-capped range of $10 to $25 and must post the fee on an approved sign.7Georgia Secretary of State. If Your Vehicle Fails
A failure isn’t the end of the road. You get one free retest at the same station within 30 calendar days of the original test, counting the test day itself.8Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Repair Waiver for Expensive Fixes
Some failures require costly work. Georgia offers a one-year repair waiver for vehicles that still can’t pass after real money has gone into them. For the 2026 registration period, you may qualify if you’ve spent $1,176 or more on emissions-related repairs, the vehicle shows improvement in every area it originally failed, and it still passes the areas it passed before.8Georgia’s Clean Air Force. To apply, take the vehicle, the original failing report, every subsequent inspection report, and all repair receipts to a Georgia’s Clean Air Force Service Center. The waiver lets you register for the current year, but you’ll need to sort out the underlying problem before your next renewal.
What Happens If You Skip It
Without a passing emissions result in the state’s system, you cannot renew your registration in the 13 counties. Driving on an expired registration is a misdemeanor in Georgia,10Justia. Late renewal also adds a $5 penalty on the registration fee plus a 10 percent penalty on any ad valorem tax owed.12Georgia Department of Revenue.
