The Georgia DDS road test is a scored, examiner-administered driving exam you must pass to get a Class D license, and you need at least 75% to clear it.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information The appointment has two parts: a set of low-speed maneuvers and a stretch of on-road driving in traffic. You bring your own vehicle, a licensed adult passenger, and the documents DDS uses to verify who you are. Show up missing any one of those pieces and the test does not happen.
What to Bring on Test Day
Four things have to travel with you to the Customer Service Center: your learner’s permit, your identity and residency documents, a qualifying vehicle, and a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. That adult rides in the car during the test, and no one else is permitted in the vehicle besides you and the examiner.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Road Test Appointments
For a REAL ID–compliant license, DDS asks for one proof of identity (a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or certificate of citizenship), your Social Security number, and two proofs of Georgia residency dated within the past six months. Residency documents can include a utility bill, bank statement, lease, mortgage statement, voter registration card, or vehicle registration, each showing your name and current address. P.O. boxes do not qualify.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID Documents (For US Citizens) If your current legal name differs from the name on your identity document, bring the paperwork that bridges the two, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
The license application itself is completed online through the DDS website or the DDS 2 GO mobile app before you arrive.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. DDS Forms If the system cannot electronically verify your SSN, bring a Social Security card, W-2, SSA-1099, or paystub showing your full number.
When you reach the Customer Service Center, check in at the kiosk or counter, then go back to your car in the testing lane and wait for the examiner.
Vehicle Condition Checklist
The examiner inspects your car before the test starts. A failure on any of these items ends the appointment before you drive a foot:
- Working turn signals, brake lights, headlights, and four-way flashers
- A functional horn
- A clean, uncracked windshield and working wipers
- Intact, clean, properly adjusted mirrors
- Tires with sufficient tread depth
The car must also carry valid Georgia liability insurance and a current registration.6Georgia Department of Revenue. IRP Insurance Requirements A borrowed vehicle is fine if it meets those standards. Most rental companies prohibit using their cars for driving tests, so that is usually not a workable option. If your car has a manual transmission, be ready to shift smoothly throughout the test; borrowing a stick-shift when you learned on an automatic rarely goes well.
Who Needs Joshua’s Law Before Testing
Applicants who are 16 or 17 cannot be tested for a Class D license without proof that they have completed an approved driver education course under Joshua’s Law. The requirement combines 30 hours of classroom or online instruction with 40 hours of supervised driving (at least 6 at night), either paired with 6 hours at a certified driving school or parent-taught using the DDS Parent/Teen Driving Guide.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Joshua’s Law Requirements Show up at 16 without that proof and the examiner will not test you.
You also must have held a Class CP instruction permit for at least one year and one day with a clean record — no convictions during that time for DUI, hit and run, racing, reckless driving, fleeing an officer, or any offense carrying four or more points.8Justia. What the Examiner Scores
The test runs in two phases. First come low-speed maneuvers in or near the testing facility. Then you leave the lot and drive in traffic while the examiner gives directions and marks a score sheet.
Low-Speed Maneuvers
- Parallel parking between two markers, ending less than 18 inches from the curb without hitting a marker
- Backing in a straight line for roughly 50 feet at a controlled speed, with your head turned and looking back the whole way
- A turnabout in a narrow space using a two-point, three-point, or five-point turn, with signals and traffic checks at every direction change
On-Road Driving
On the road, scored behaviors include approaching stop signs and signals in the correct lane with the proper signal and stopping before the crosswalk; yielding to pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists who are already in the intersection; entering the correct lane and signaling well before each turn; checking ahead and behind before passing; and keeping a safe following distance. The examiner uses a simple gauge for the last one: when the car ahead passes a fixed landmark like a telephone pole, you should be able to count “one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two” before you reach the same spot. Keep both hands on the wheel, do not rest your elbow on the window, and do not try to chat with the examiner.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information
Passing Score and Automatic Failures
You need 75% to pass. Small deductions accumulate quickly: forgetting a signal, drifting out of your lane, stopping past a crosswalk, missing mirror checks, taking a wide turn. A handful of those together is enough to push you below the line.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Test and Exams Information
Some errors end the test immediately no matter what your score looks like at that moment. Causing an accident or committing a traffic violation during the test, whether the examiner issues a ticket or not, is an automatic failure and triggers a 30-day waiting period before you can try again.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. After the Test
Back in the parking space, the examiner walks you through the score sheet and tells you the result. If you passed, you go inside to finalize your records and pay the licensing fee, which Georgia law caps at $32 for an eight-year Class D noncommercial license.9Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-25 – Applications; Fees; Provisions for Voluntary Participation in Various Programs You leave with a temporary paper document; the permanent card arrives in the mail within 45 days.10Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewals FAQs
If you did not pass, the retake clock depends on how many attempts you have made:
- One day after the first failure
- Seven days after the second failure
- Seven days after the third failure
- Full reapplication after the fourth failure
The 30-day wait applies instead whenever an accident or traffic violation caused the failure, regardless of attempt number.1Georgia Department of Driver Services.
