Georgia Driver Safety Course: Points, Insurance, and Enrollment

A Georgia defensive driving course is a six-hour, in-person class from a school certified by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). Finish one and you can knock up to seven points off your driving record, and you’ll qualify for at least a 10 percent discount on your auto insurance if everyone named on the policy meets the state’s requirements. The course costs up to $95, and you can use it for point reduction only once every five years.1Justia. What the Course Does for Your Points

Georgia suspends your license automatically once you hit 15 points in any 24-month window. Points add up fast: aggressive driving is six points, reckless driving is four, and most ordinary moving violations run two or three.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Points and Points Reduction Two aggressive driving tickets plus a single three-point violation is enough to trigger suspension.

Completing a DDS-certified defensive driving course removes up to seven points from your record, down to a floor of zero. The catch is the five-year rule: you can only use the course for point reduction once every five years, measured from the date of your last course taken for that purpose.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-86 – Reduction of Point Count Upon Completion of Course

That five-year limit is worth thinking about before you sign up. If you’re only carrying three or four points, burning your one chance now leaves you unprotected if you pick up a serious violation later. Save it for when you actually need the cushion.

What the Course Does for Your Insurance

Georgia law requires insurers to offer at least a 10 percent discount on liability, first-party medical, and collision coverage when the drivers on the policy meet certain conditions. The requirements split by age.4Justia. Georgia Code 33-9-42 – Reduction in Premiums for Motor Vehicle Liability, First-Party Medical, and Collision Coverages for Certain Named Drivers

Drivers 25 and Older

Every named driver on the policy who is 25 or older must have had no traffic offenses and no at-fault insurance claims in the prior three years, and each must complete a six-hour defensive driving course from a DDS-certified school. Courses offered by nonprofits such as AARP, AAA, and the National Safety Council also qualify, along with employer-sponsored programs that meet DDS standards.4Justia. Georgia Code 33-9-42 – Reduction in Premiums for Motor Vehicle Liability, First-Party Medical, and Collision Coverages for Certain Named Drivers

Drivers Under 25

Named drivers under 25 face the same clean-record requirement, but the course is different. They must complete a full preparatory driver education course of at least 30 classroom hours plus six hours of behind-the-wheel training, delivered by a DDS-certified school or an accredited educational institution.4Justia. Georgia Code 33-9-42 – Reduction in Premiums for Motor Vehicle Liability, First-Party Medical, and Collision Coverages for Certain Named Drivers

The discount attaches to the policy, not to individual drivers. Every named driver has to qualify. One person on the policy with a recent ticket or no completed course, and the discount doesn’t apply to anyone.

Cost, Format, and Why There’s No Online Option

The price is capped by DDS. When you’re taking the course for license reinstatement, point reduction, or a court order, certified clinics must charge exactly $95. When you’re taking it voluntarily for an insurance discount or your own education, clinics can charge up to $95 but no more.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Defensive Driving Program FAQs

The course runs six hours. Schools can deliver it in a single sitting or split it across sessions. Content is set by the DDS commissioner and typically covers Georgia traffic law, the point system, hazard recognition, and the consequences of distracted and aggressive driving.5Justia. Georgia Code 40-5-83 – Approval and Operation of Driver Improvement Clinics You have to meet the full attendance requirement and pass a final exam to receive your certificate.

One rule catches a lot of people off guard: Georgia DDS does not accept online defensive driving courses for anything tied to your license. Point reduction, license reinstatement, a court requirement, all of it requires in-person attendance at a certified location. Online courses marketed to Georgia drivers may be fine for personal review, but they won’t produce a certificate the state will honor.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Finding a Certified School and Enrolling

DDS keeps a directory of certified schools on its website, and you should start there. A course from a school not on that list cannot produce a valid certificate, and DDS will reject it for every license-related purpose.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Driver Training

When you sign up, bring your full legal name as it appears on your government ID and your Georgia driver’s license number. If a court ordered the course, bring the case number and the name of the issuing court so the school can note it correctly on your certificate. Many schools let you register online, but the class itself still has to happen in person.

Submitting Your Certificate After You Finish

For Point Reduction

You can either walk your original certificate into any DDS Customer Service Center or mail it to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, P.O. Box 80447, Conyers, Georgia 30013.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Points and Points Reduction DDS needs the original, not a copy. Make a photocopy for yourself before you send it; if the original disappears in the mail, you’ll have to go back to the school for a replacement. Processing runs anywhere from a few business days to about two weeks.

For the Insurance Discount

Send a copy of your certificate to your insurer, either through your agent or the company’s online portal. Most carriers apply the discount within one billing cycle. Remember the whole-policy rule: your certificate alone won’t trigger the reduction if another named driver hasn’t qualified.

Confirming the Points Came Off

Once you’ve given processing time to catch up, order a driving history report through the DDS website to verify. A three-year report is $6, and a seven-year or lifetime report is $8.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. If You Were Ordered to Take a Course After a DUI

The defensive driving course is not the same thing as Georgia’s DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program. The DUI program is longer and more expensive, with an assessment and at least 20 hours of therapeutic education and group counseling. Fees are set by statute at $100 for the assessment and $235 for the intervention, plus a $25 materials fee, for a total of $360.8Georgia Secretary of State. Georgia Code 40-5-83 – Approval and Operation of Driver Improvement Clinics If a court or DDS told you to complete a DUI Risk Reduction program, a defensive driving certificate will not satisfy that requirement. Check your paperwork before you enroll in anything.
