Georgia Driver’s License: Format, Designations, and Renewal

A Georgia driver’s license is a polycarbonate ID card issued by the Department of Driver Services (DDS) that authorizes you to drive and serves as your primary proof of identity. Every card issued after 2012 is REAL ID compliant, marked by a star in the upper-right corner, and can be used to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities. Georgia now issues a digital version for your phone as well, though you’re still expected to carry the physical card while driving.

What the Card Looks Like

The card is made from polycarbonate, a rigid plastic that resists bending and surface tampering better than the older laminated designs. The front shows your photo, full legal name, date of birth, residential address, license number, and the issue and expiration dates. A gold or black star sits in the upper-right corner. The color is cosmetic only. Both stars mean the same thing under federal rules, and there is no need to visit a DDS center to swap one for the other.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. Security features are layered so that no single one carries the weight of authenticating the card. There’s a ghost image (a smaller secondary copy of your photograph), a holographic overlay with state symbols, and microprinting that looks like a solid line to the naked eye but reveals tiny text under magnification. Ultraviolet ink becomes visible under UV light. Laser engraving embeds text directly into the card material, so any attempt to alter it damages the card visibly.

The back carries a PDF417 two-dimensional barcode that encodes your name, date of birth, license number, address, gender, and expiration date in a format used across all U.S. jurisdictions. Scanners compare the encoded data against what’s printed on the front, and a mismatch flags a possible forgery.

What You Can Do With It

If your Georgia license shows a gold or black star, you can use it to board domestic commercial flights and enter certain federal facilities without additional identification.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia REAL ID Information If you arrive at a TSA checkpoint without a REAL ID–compliant license or an alternative like a U.S. passport or Global Entry card, TSA ConfirmID is a fallback: a $45 fee covers a 10-day window, and you fill out a form at TSA.gov/ConfirmID beforehand and show the payment receipt with any government-issued ID at the checkpoint. Verification isn’t guaranteed, so it’s a last resort.3Transportation Security Administration. Digital Driver’s License

Georgia now issues a digital version of the license that lives in your smartphone or smartwatch’s digital wallet. As of late 2025, the Georgia Department of Revenue’s Alcohol and Tobacco Division confirmed that digital licenses are a valid form of ID for age-restricted purchases at participating retailers, though acceptance is at each business’s discretion.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Digital Driver’s Licenses Can Now Be Accepted for Age-Restricted Purchases The digital license supplements the physical card rather than replacing it. You still need the physical card behind the wheel.

Optional Designations on the Card

Georgia lets you add several designations that change what’s printed on the license.

Veteran

Residents who served on honorable active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, or completed 20 years in the National Guard, can add a veteran designation. Activation for training alone does not qualify. You’ll need to present your DD-214 separation papers or a Certificate of Eligibility (DS-516B) approved by the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, along with the standard identity and residency documents.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Organ Donor

You can register as an organ donor when you apply for or renew your license, and a donor symbol will appear on the card. You can also register separately through Donate Life Georgia’s website. Telling your family about your decision matters too, since medical teams work more smoothly when the family already knows.

Limited-Term (Non-Citizens)

Non-citizens lawfully present in the United States, including permanent residents, international students, temporary workers, and their dependents, can get a Georgia license printed with the words “LIMITED-TERM.” The card is valid for the holder’s approved length of stay, up to five years. It carries the same driving privileges and security features as a standard license and should be accepted for everyday activities like banking and car rental. A limited-term card cannot be used to verify citizenship for voting, and an expired one does not by itself mean the holder is in the country unlawfully.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. How to Get a Georgia License

DDS requires three categories of documentation: proof of identity, proof of Georgia residency, and a Social Security number. For identity, bring one document such as a certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Certificate of Naturalization. For residency, bring two documents dated within the last six months showing your name and street address; utility bills, bank statements, a lease, or a voter registration card all work. Your SSN is entered on the online License/ID/Permit Form. If it fails to verify electronically, bring a Social Security card, W-2, or other document showing your full number.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID Documents (For U.S. Citizens)

Teen Drivers Under TADRA

Georgia’s Teenage and Adult Driver Responsibility Act (TADRA) creates a three-step graduated licensing process for drivers aged 15 through 17. It starts with an instructional permit (Class CP) available at 15 after passing a knowledge exam. After holding the permit for at least 12 months and one day without any major traffic violations, a 16- or 17-year-old can apply for a provisional license (Class D) by passing a road skills test.8Georgia Department of Driver Services. The driver education requirement depends on age. Sixteen-year-olds must complete an approved course with at least 30 hours of classroom or online instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, plus 40 total hours of supervised driving including 6 hours at night. Seventeen-year-olds need only the 40 hours of supervised driving; the formal course is recommended but not required for them.9Georgia Department of Driver Services. TADRA Final

Renewing or Replacing Your License

You can renew a Georgia license up to 150 days before its expiration date and as late as two years after it expires.10Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewals FAQs Renewal is available online, through the DDS 2 GO mobile app, in person at a Customer Service Center, or by mail if you fall into certain categories: full-time students attending school outside Georgia, U.S. citizens working overseas, active-duty military and their dependents, and drivers over age 64.11Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renew License or ID

The renewal fee for a standard eight-year license is $32, with a $5 discount if you complete the transaction online. If you renew in person, expect a new photograph. A replacement for a lost, stolen, or damaged card costs $10; if the card was lost in the mail after a renewal, DDS will replace it at no charge.12Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms One thing to watch for: if your license is suspended in any state, not just Georgia, DDS will not renew it until the suspension is cleared.10Georgia Department of Driver Services. Suspension and Reinstatement Fees

Getting a suspended license back involves paying a reinstatement fee, and the amount varies by the reason for the suspension. Common fees include:

  • DUI (first offense, age 21+): $210 in person, $200 by mail
  • Points violation (first offense): $210 in person, $200 by mail
  • No proof of insurance (first offense): $210 in person, $200 by mail
  • Failure to appear: $100 in person, $90 by mail
  • Super Speeder: $200 Super Speeder fee plus a separate reinstatement fee
  • Child support non-compliance: $35 in person, $25 by mail

Paying by mail or online consistently costs $10 less than paying at a Customer Service Center. Partial payments aren’t accepted, and you’ll need to resolve any additional requirements tied to the suspension, such as a DUI risk-reduction program, before DDS reinstates your record.13Georgia Department of Driver Services. Penalties for Misuse and Fraud

Georgia treats license-related offenses along a spectrum from misdemeanor to serious felony, and the distinctions matter.

Lending your license to someone else, using another person’s license as your own, or displaying a canceled, revoked, or suspended license are misdemeanors, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.14Justia Law. Georgia Code 17-10-3 – Punishment for Misdemeanors Making false statements on a license application is a separate offense for false statements to a government agency.15Georgia Code. Georgia Code Section 40-5-125 – Fraudulent Drivers License or Identification Card; False Statements in Applications

Actually forging or counterfeiting a license is far more serious. First-degree forgery is a felony punishable by one to 15 years in prison, and second-degree forgery carries one to five years.16Justia Law. Georgia Code 16-9-2 – Penalties for Forgery Identity fraud, meaning use of someone else’s personal information without consent, falls under a separate statute and also carries felony penalties.17Georgia Department of Driver Services.
