The Georgia HOPE Grant pays part of your tuition if you’re a Georgia resident enrolled in a certificate, diploma, or qualifying associate degree program at a Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) school. For the 2025–2026 award year, it pays a flat $107 per credit hour, up to 15 hours per term, which comes to $1,605 for a full-time student in a given term.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. FY 2026 HOPE Award Amounts Unlike the HOPE Scholarship for bachelor’s students, this grant is built for workforce training and has no high school GPA requirement to start.
Who Qualifies
You need to be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen under federal Title IV rules as of the first day of classes, and a legal resident of Georgia.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. HOPE Grant Program Regulations 2025-20263GAfutures. Eligibility for the HOPE Grant Your financial aid office will usually ask for a Georgia driver’s license or state ID, a Georgia tax return, or an active Georgia voter registration to confirm residency.
You also need to be enrolled in a certificate or diploma program at a TCSG or University System of Georgia school. Associate degree programs at TCSG institutions qualify too. Bachelor’s coursework does not, and if you already hold a bachelor’s degree from any institution, including a foreign one, you are permanently ineligible.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. Male applicants must be registered with the U.S. Selective Service to receive any Georgia state aid.4GAfutures. Selective Service State Requirements Registration closes at age 26. If you’re past that age and never registered, you can ask the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) for a Selective Service Exemption by showing the failure to register wasn’t knowing and willful. Without a registration or an approved exemption, your college cannot award state aid.5GAfutures. Selective Service Requirement for Males Age 26 or Older
Two other disqualifiers trip people up. If you’re in default on a federal or Georgia student loan, grant, or scholarship, or you owe a refund on a Georgia program, you have to clear that balance before the grant can be awarded. And under the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, a felony conviction involving marijuana, controlled substances, or dangerous drugs makes you ineligible from the date of conviction through the end of the following school term.3GAfutures. How Much It Pays
For fiscal year 2026 the rate is $107 per credit hour at every TCSG institution, capped at 15 hours per term.1Georgia Student Finance Commission. FY 2026 HOPE Award Amounts The grant covers standard tuition only. It does not pay mandatory student fees, textbooks, supplies, or any other costs, so plan on some out-of-pocket expense even when the grant is in place. Rates are set each year by GSFC and can change, so check the current award chart before each term.
How to Apply
You apply by completing either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Georgia Student Finance Application (GSFAPP). Both are on the GAfutures website.6GAfutures. Application Procedure and Deadline for the HOPE Grant Have your Social Security number, your legal name as it appears on government documents, the school code for your college, and, if applicable, your Selective Service registration number. The FAFSA has to be completed every year.
The official deadline is the last day of the school term or your withdrawal date, whichever comes first.6GAfutures. Application Procedure and Deadline for the HOPE Grant File well before that. Your college still has to process your application and build your award, and many schools set their own earlier internal deadlines. Waiting until the final week of the term often means your funding isn’t confirmed by the tuition due date. After you submit, you can log back into GAfutures to track status and upload anything the aid office requests.
Keeping the Grant: GPA Checkpoints and Hour Limits
The grant doesn’t check your GPA every term. It checks at two specific credit-hour marks, and the rules are strict.
The first checkpoint is at 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of paid credits. At the end of that term, your calculated HOPE GPA must be at least 2.0. Learning Support coursework is excluded from the calculation. If you fall below 2.0, you lose the grant.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. HOPE Grant Program Regulations 2025-2026 You then get one chance to earn it back: bring your HOPE GPA to 2.0 or higher by the time you’ve accumulated 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours). You pay out of pocket during the gap, but the hours you self-funded don’t count against your lifetime cap. The stretch between 30 and 60 hours is where retaking a weak course or two is almost always cheaper than losing the grant.
The second checkpoint is at 60 semester hours (or 90 quarter hours). The same 2.0 threshold applies, and this time there’s no second chance. If your HOPE GPA is below 2.0 at that mark, the loss is permanent.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. HOPE Grant Program Regulations 2025-2026
There are also hour caps. The HOPE Grant has a lifetime limit of 63 semester hours (or 95 quarter hours) of paid credits, including any hours paid while you were in high school through dual enrollment.2Georgia Student Finance Commission. HOPE Grant Program Regulations 2025-2026 On top of that, Georgia applies a combined cap of 127 semester hours (or 190 quarter hours) across all HOPE and Zell Miller programs together. If you used HOPE Scholarship hours for a prior degree, those count against this combined cap. Most single certificate or diploma programs need far fewer than 63 hours, so these limits matter most for students stacking multiple credentials.
Extra Money for Certain Students
If your cumulative GPA in your certificate or diploma program reaches 3.5, the state automatically evaluates you for the Zell Miller Grant, which pays full standard tuition rather than the fixed $107 per hour.7Georgia Student Finance Commission. GSFC Program Descriptions You don’t apply separately. If your GPA later drops below 3.5 but stays at 2.0 or above, you move back to the standard HOPE Grant instead of losing aid.
Students enrolled in specific workforce-shortage programs can also receive the HOPE Career Grant on top of the standard grant. Qualifying fields include healthcare, commercial truck driving, cybersecurity, welding, construction trades, early childhood education, law enforcement, aviation, and precision manufacturing, among others.8Georgia Senate. HOPE Career Grant Programs of Study For most qualifying programs, the Career Grant pays $125 for 1–2 credit hours, $250 for 3–8 hours, and $500 for 9 or more hours per term. Commercial truck driving and basic law enforcement programs have their own higher per-term amounts with lifetime caps of $1,100 and $3,750 respectively for the whole program.9GAfutures.
