Georgia license plate codes are the serial numbers, county decals, and weight-class markings the state prints on every plate so that law enforcement, tag offices, and other drivers can identify the vehicle’s registration category at a glance. The Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division controls the design under Title 40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, and the coding varies by plate type: standard passenger, military, organizational, prestige, and commercial plates each follow their own rules.1Justia. What’s on a Standard Georgia Plate
A standard plate shows the state name, the month and year the registration expires, and a serial number in a three-letter, three-number pattern such as ABC 1234. The state generates these serials automatically so no two active plates carry the same combination. The plate also includes weight-class markings that tell an officer whether the vehicle matches its registered category.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-31 – License Plate Design; Revalidation and County Decals
Below the serial number sits a reflective adhesive decal with the name of the county where the vehicle is registered. The county tax commissioner’s office issues this decal, and it gives officers immediate jurisdictional context during a stop.1Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-31 – License Plate Design; Revalidation and County Decals If you’d rather not display your county, Georgia offers a free “In God We Trust” decal that goes in the same space. The Department of Revenue provides it at no charge on request.2Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-9 – Space for County Name Decal; Display of “In God We Trust” Decal in Lieu of County Name Decal
Military and Veteran Plate Codes
Georgia issues distinctive plates for veterans, medal recipients, and families of service members killed in action. The plates carry branch insignias and service-related abbreviations rather than the standard three-and-three serial format. Under O.C.G.A. 40-2-85.1, eligibility runs to former members of the U.S. armed forces discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, medal recipients, and those who served in active combat. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans can also receive the plates as long as they have not remarried.3Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-85.1 – License Plates for Certain Veterans
Veterans who qualify as totally disabled receive their plate free, with no registration fee. You submit a letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs proving your rating. If the disability isn’t classified as permanent, you resubmit proof each year at renewal.4Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-69 – License Plates for Veterans Qualifying as Totally Disabled
Gold Star Family plates go to close relatives of service members killed in action: spouses, parents, siblings, and children. Eligibility is confirmed through Department of Defense documentation, either a DEERS report dated before the service member’s death or a DD-1300 form listing the family member.5Justia. Organizational, University, and Cause Plates
Two statutes control the specialty plates you see supporting nonprofits, universities, and state programs, and each uses its own coding on the plate face.
Under O.C.G.A. 40-2-86, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit can sponsor a plate design. The organization works with the commissioner on the artwork, and a portion of the fees collected feeds back to the group’s programs.7Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-86 – License Plates Promoting or Supporting Certain Agencies, Funds, or Nonprofit Corporations With Proceeds Disbursed to the General Fund and the Agency, Fund, or Nonprofit Corporation O.C.G.A. 40-2-60.1 creates a parallel process for special group plates aimed at particular categories of people or vehicles, with a $25 manufacturing fee, a $35 plate fee at issuance, and a $35 annual renewal fee on top of standard registration costs.8Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-60.1 – Standardized Administrative Process for Special License Plates; Designs; Fees; Application Process
Both categories share the same production thresholds. Georgia won’t manufacture a new specialty plate until it receives at least 1,000 prepaid applications with manufacturing fees. If active registrations later fall below 500 during a renewal cycle, the sponsoring organization has to gather another 1,000 prepaid applications to keep the plate in production.7Justia. Prestige (Personalized) Plates
If you want to choose the code on your own plate, Georgia’s prestige plate program lets you request a custom combination of letters and numbers. Prestige plates cost $35 on top of your regular registration fee when first issued, plus a $35 annual renewal fee for as long as you keep the plate.9Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-60 – Prestige License Plates
Standard passenger vehicles get up to seven characters in any combination of letters and numbers. Motorcycle prestige plates are capped at six. Your requested combination can’t duplicate an existing plate number or contain offensive language. You submit the request through the Department of Revenue; if it’s rejected, you can appeal or try a different combination.
Commercial Plate Codes
Commercial vehicles weighing 10,001 pounds or more use a separate registration and coding system, and the plate itself carries weight-class indicators that reflect the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating. That lets inspection officers verify a truck’s actual load against its registered class.10Georgia Department of Revenue. Commercial Vehicle Registration
Where you register depends on weight and operating range:
- Under 26,000 pounds, Georgia-only operation: register at your county tag office, similar to a passenger vehicle.
- 26,001 pounds or more, or operating across state lines: register through the Georgia Trucking Portal under the International Registration Plan and International Fuel Tax Agreement.
- 55,000 pounds or more: file IRS Form 2290 for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, both when first adding the vehicle and at each annual renewal.
Fees Tied to Plate Type
The base annual registration fee for a passenger vehicle or motorcycle is $20.11Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-151 – Annual License Fees for Operation of Vehicles; Fee for Permanent Licensing of Certain Trailers; Fee for New Passenger Car With Paid Title Ad Valorem Taxes Specialty and prestige plates add their own fees on top of that. Renewing late triggers a penalty of 10% of the ad valorem tax due plus 25% of the license plate fee, with a minimum ad valorem penalty of $5.12Georgia Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties
Your plate belongs to you, not the vehicle. When you sell a car, you keep the plate; the buyer can’t use it. You can transfer the plate to another vehicle you own in the same weight class by filing an application and paying a $5 transfer fee.13Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-42 – Transfer of License Plates and Revalidation Decals If you buy a vehicle and need a new registration, you have seven business days from acquiring the vehicle to complete the process, with a possible 30-day extension if the seller hasn’t delivered the title.14Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-29 – Registration and License Plate Required
Penalties for Altering, Misusing, or Covering a Plate
Deliberately changing, concealing, or damaging any part of a plate, including the serial number, county decal, or expiration markings, is a misdemeanor under O.C.G.A. 40-2-6. The same charge applies to knowingly driving a vehicle with a tampered plate.15Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-6 – Alteration of License Plates; Operation of Vehicle With Altered or Improperly Transferred Plate A standard Georgia misdemeanor carries a fine of up to $1,000, up to 12 months in jail, or both.16Justia. Georgia Code 17-10-3 – Punishment for Misdemeanors
Buying, possessing, or displaying a plate that wasn’t issued for the vehicle it’s on is a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature, a step up from the standard grade. The minimum fine is $500, with up to 12 months of confinement possible.17Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-5 – Unlawful Actions Relating to License Plate; Use of Expired Prestige License Plate
Plate covers and frames trip up drivers who don’t realize they’re breaking the law. Georgia prohibits covering a plate with any material that isn’t colorless and transparent, and bans any device that obstructs the plate’s legibility. A tinted cover, a frame that blocks the county name, or even caked-on dirt that makes the plate unreadable can all draw a misdemeanor citation.18Justia. Georgia Code 40-2-41 – Display of License Plates A basic frame that doesn’t cover any text or decal is fine; if there’s any chance yours touches the county decal or expiration sticker, skip it.
