Georgia Motorcycle Permit Test: Eligibility, Topics, and Restrictions

The Georgia motorcycle permit test is two written exams taken back-to-back at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) customer service center: a Road Signs test and a Road Rules test, each with 20 multiple-choice questions, and you need at least 15 correct on each to pass.¹ You take it after submitting your application online and clearing a vision screening in person. Passing earns you a Class MP instructional permit.

Who Can Take the Test

Under O.C.G.A. § 40-5-24(c), you must be at least 17 years old to apply for a Georgia motorcycle instructional permit. If you’ve completed a driver education course, the minimum drops to 16.² This is not the same threshold as a regular car learner’s permit.

If you’re under 18, a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult has to come with you to the DDS center and sign your application, bringing paperwork that shows their relationship to you. Minors also need to provide proof of school enrollment, an acceptable document with your first and last name on it.³

What To Bring and Do Before You Arrive

Georgia follows Real ID standards, so your document package has to be complete before the DDS will process your application. You need:

One proof of identity, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal, an unexpired U.S. passport, or a Certificate of Naturalization.
Your Social Security number. You’ll enter the full number on the online application; if the automated verification fails, bring your Social Security card or other proof.
Two proofs of Georgia residency from separate sources, dated within the past six months, showing your name and residential street address. P.O. boxes do not count. Utility bills and bank statements are typical.

These are the standard DDS Real ID documents.⁴ Before your visit, submit the online License/ID/Permit Form through the DDS website, or complete the DS23 application through the DDS 2 GO mobile app.⁵ Your submitted information stays on file for 60 days; miss that window and you’ll fill it out again.

The permit fee is $10.00.⁶

What the Knowledge Test Covers

Both parts of the exam are taken on the same visit. The Road Signs test checks whether you can identify traffic signs, signals, and warning markers. The Road Rules test covers traffic laws, lane positioning, and defensive riding techniques specific to motorcycles. Each part has 20 multiple-choice questions with a passing score of 15.¹

Pre-ride inspection using the T-CLOCS checklist: Tires and Wheels, Controls, Lights and Electrics, Oil and Other Fluids, Chassis, and Stands. Know what to check in each category before every ride.
Braking technique. The manual separates front-brake use, rear-brake use, and combined braking, and questions often turn on when to favor one over the other.
Lane positioning. There are three lane positions, and the test asks which one is preferred depending on traffic, road conditions, and visibility.
Obstacle avoidance and swerving at speed, including handling debris, animals, and sudden hazards.

Road Rules is where most failures happen. The signs are largely the same ones you saw for a car permit; the motorcycle-specific material around cornering, group riding, and carrying passengers is new ground.

What Happens on Test Day

Book an appointment through the DDS website. Walk-ins can wait significantly longer. Check in at the kiosk, which links your pre-submitted online application to your visit.

The first step is a vision screening. You need at least 20/60 acuity in one eye (with or without corrective lenses) and a minimum 140-degree field of vision.⁷ Fail the field-of-vision portion and you’ll need a licensed eye doctor to complete a Vision Report Form (DDS-MR-274) before you can go further.

After clearing vision, you move to a computer station for the two knowledge exams. Check-in, screening, testing, photo, and payment usually run between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the center’s volume. You leave with a temporary paper permit that day; the permanent card comes by mail.

If You Fail

Missing 15 out of 20 on either section means you can retake the failed portion. The DDS does not publish a specific mandatory waiting period between attempts, though some centers may ask you to come back on a different day. You pay the permit fee again for each new attempt.

Watch the clock. Your knowledge exam scores are only valid for one year. If you don’t pass the on-cycle skills test within that year, you have to retake and pass the written exam again before you can schedule the skills test.⁸

What the Permit Lets You Do

Passing the test gets you a Class MP instructional permit, which comes with three restrictions written into the statute: no riding at night, no passengers, and no limited-access highways or interstates.² Violating them can bring a traffic citation and put your path to a full license at risk.

One thing that isn’t on the list: supervision. Unlike a regular car learner’s permit, no licensed rider needs to accompany you. You ride alone from day one.

How Long the Permit Lasts

Your permit is valid for six months from the date it’s issued.² You’re allowed one renewal, which can extend permit-level riding up to a full year.⁸ Because knowledge exam scores expire after one year regardless, letting the full year lapse without passing a skills test means starting over on the written exam.

Six months goes fast if you only ride on weekends or in good weather. Plan a timeline that puts your skills test or safety course well before your permit expiration, not right against it.
