Georgia REAL ID Driver’s License: Documents, DDS Visit, and Alternatives

If your Georgia driver’s license was issued or renewed anytime since 2012, it is almost certainly a Georgia Real ID already. Look at the upper right corner of the card: a gold or black star means it meets federal standards and will be accepted at TSA checkpoints and federal buildings. No star means you need to visit a Department of Driver Services Customer Service Center with original identity, Social Security, and Georgia residency documents and pay the standard $32 license fee. Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025.

Check Your Current License First

Georgia started issuing Real ID-compliant cards in 2012, well ahead of most states. The marker is a star in the upper right corner of the license or ID. Gold and black stars mean the same thing; the color has no functional difference.1Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID

If your card has no star, it will not get you through airport security or into most federal facilities. There is no separate Real ID application to file. The upgrade happens as part of a normal license issuance or renewal, and the fee is the same $32 for an eight-year card you would pay anyway.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms

What to Bring to DDS

This is where most visits go sideways. You need original or certified documents across three categories, plus name-change paperwork if your legal name has changed. Photocopies and digital images are not accepted.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. SAVE

Proof of Identity (one document)

  • Certified U.S. birth certificate (the hospital keepsake version does not count)
  • Valid U.S. passport, or one expired no more than 10 years
  • Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad from the U.S. Department of State
  • Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551)

If your current legal name does not match the name on your identity document, bring the full chain of legal name-change records connecting the two: marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court orders.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Secure ID Brochure

Social Security Number

DDS verifies your full Social Security number electronically. If the automated check fails, bring a document showing all nine digits: your Social Security card, a W-2, a paycheck with the full number, an SSA-1099 or non-SSA-1099, or a denial letter from the Social Security Administration.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia Residency (two documents)

Two separate documents, each showing your name and Georgia street address. Mortgage statements, property tax bills, health insurance statements, paychecks or W-2s, school records, or a Georgia tax return for the current or prior year all qualify. Utility bills, bank statements, and rental agreements work if dated within the last two years. A valid Georgia license or ID can count as one of the two.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. At the DDS Office

Appointments are not required. DDS Customer Service Centers accept walk-ins for license renewals and Real ID upgrades; the appointment system is reserved for road tests.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. Appointments A representative reviews and scans your original documents, takes a new photo, and collects the $32 fee. That fee is the same across standard Class C, motorcycle, and commercial license types.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms

You leave with a temporary paper permit that works for driving. The permanent card with the star arrives by mail. DDS allows up to 45 days from the interim document, though most people receive it in two to three weeks.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renewals FAQs One important limit: TSA does not accept the temporary paper permit as valid identification for air travel.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you have a flight coming up, plan around the mail time.

If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

Georgia law requires DDS to verify every non-citizen’s immigration documents through the federal SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) system before issuing a license or ID.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. SAVE What you bring depends on your status:

  • Permanent residents: Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551, the green card)
  • Work authorization holders: Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766)
  • Visa holders: valid foreign passport with your I-94 arrival record
  • Refugees, asylees, and TPS holders: the relevant federal documentation for your status

A license issued to a non-citizen is valid only for the duration of the holder’s authorized stay or five years, whichever is shorter.8Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-5-21.1 – Temporary Licenses, Permits, or Special Identification Cards If SAVE cannot verify your status automatically, DDS triggers a manual review with USCIS. As of March 2026, that additional verification takes roughly 20 federal workdays, and complex cases run longer.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. SAVE Verification Response Time Data-entry mistakes such as misspelled names or transposed birth dates are the most common cause of delays, so check that your application matches your immigration documents exactly.

If your Georgia license is about to expire and you have filed for an immigration status extension that has not come through, DDS can issue a 120-day temporary driving permit while you wait, provided you bring proof the extension application was filed.8Justia Law. When You Actually Need a Real ID

Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies require a Real ID-compliant license (or another acceptable federal ID) at three main checkpoints:

  • Domestic flights: TSA requires compliant identification at airport security for adults 18 and older.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
  • Federal buildings: most federal facilities now require compliant ID for entry, though procedures vary by building.11U.S. Department of Homeland Security. ID Requirements for Federal Facilities
  • Military installations: civilians and contractors entering a base need a compliant ID.12USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel

You do not need a Real ID to drive in Georgia, vote in Georgia elections, or access medical care. It is a federal access credential, not a general-purpose upgrade.

Alternatives If You Do Not Have One

A Real ID is not the only identification TSA accepts. Any of the following also works:

  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • U.S. military ID, including dependent cards
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI)
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Foreign passport
  • Tribal ID cards from federally recognized nations
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential

TSA also accepts certain digital IDs at participating airports, including Apple Digital ID, Clear ID, and Google ID pass.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint

Showing up to the airport with no compliant ID is not an automatic turn-away. Starting February 1, 2026, TSA offers ConfirmID, an identity verification process that lets you proceed through security for a $45 fee.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint It is an expensive backup, not a substitute for upgrading your license.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Real ID

A lost or stolen Real ID is replaced at a DDS Customer Service Center. The replacement fee is $32 for a new eight-year card.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees and Terms DDS already has your identity documents on file, but the agency advises bringing originals every time you visit in case something needs to be reverified.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. SAVE If your identity has been compromised, ask DDS about assigning a new license number.

A Note on Children

Children under 18 do not need a Real ID or any identification to fly domestically. TSA’s ID rule applies only to adults 18 and older.7Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If a minor needs a Georgia license or ID for other reasons, a parent or legal guardian signs and verifies the application. When no parent or guardian is available, a responsible adult who is 18 or older and has personal knowledge of the applicant can sign, and DDS may require an affidavit explaining the circumstances. Minors who are legally married, on active military duty, or emancipated by court order are exempt from the parental signature requirement.
