To meet Georgia’s Real ID requirements, you need one document proving your identity and lawful presence, your Social Security number, and two documents showing your current Georgia residential address, all presented in person at a Department of Driver Services (DDS) Customer Service Center. Check Your Current License First
Georgia started issuing Real ID–compliant credentials in 2012 and moved most residents onto the new format during routine renewals.2Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgians in Compliance with Real ID Ahead of Due Date If your card was issued or renewed after that year with full identity documents, you almost certainly have the star. Gold and black carry identical weight; there’s no reason to swap one for the other.
The residents who typically lack the star are those holding very old cards that haven’t been renewed in years, or those who received a limited credential before the program launched. Non-U.S. citizens with lawful presence receive a card printed with “LIMITED-TERM” on the face; it shares the same security features as a standard Georgia license but expires when the holder’s approved period of stay ends, up to five years.3Georgia Department of Driver Services. Documents You Need to Bring
Georgia’s Real ID program (the state calls it Secure ID) asks for documents in three categories.4Georgia Department of Driver Services. Georgia REAL ID Information Everything must be original or certified. Copies won’t be accepted.
One Identity Document
You need one document that establishes both your identity and your lawful presence in the United States. The commonly used options are:
- An original or certified U.S. birth certificate with a raised seal, issued by a Bureau of Vital Statistics or State Board of Health
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
- A Certificate of Naturalization
- A Certificate of Citizenship
- A Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Social Security Number
You have to provide your full Social Security number. DDS verifies it electronically against Social Security Administration records, and your name and date of birth have to match exactly.6Georgia Department of Driver Services. Two Proofs of Georgia Residence
You need two separate documents showing your name and current Georgia residential address, each dated within the past six months. P.O. boxes do not count.5Georgia Department of Driver Services. REAL ID Documents (For U.S. Citizens) Common options include:
- Utility bills for water, gas, electric, phone, or cable
- Bank or credit card statements
- A residential lease or rental agreement
- A mortgage statement or deed
The two documents have to come from different sources or different accounts. A gas bill plus an electric bill from separate utilities works; two statements from the same bank account does not.7Georgia Department of Driver Services. Update License
Name-Change Documents (If Your Name Has Changed)
If your current legal name is different from the name on your identity document, bring certified paperwork connecting the two. Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, adoption papers, and court-ordered name changes all qualify. Existing Georgia license holders generally only need the most recent name-change document. Extra Rules for Non-U.S. Citizens
Non-citizens follow the same three-category structure but must present valid, original immigration documents at a DDS Customer Service Center each time they apply or renew. If you have DHS work authorization, you’re required to apply for a Social Security number. Non-citizens without work authorization who can’t get an SSN must present a Certification of Social Security Denial Status (Form DDS-351) instead. If your immigration status has lapsed but you have a pending renewal, an original I-797C Notice of Action combined with expired immigration documents can qualify you for a one-time 120-day extension of your license.9Georgia Department of Driver Services. How to Apply at a DDS Customer Service Center
Before you go, fill out the Online Connection Card on the DDS website. It lets you pre-enter your personal information and select the documents you plan to bring, then generates a barcode that speeds up intake at the counter. It also flags document gaps before you leave the house.
Many DDS locations accept walk-ins, but scheduling an appointment online cuts your wait considerably during peak hours. When you arrive, an examiner inspects your originals, verifies their authenticity, and scans them into the state’s secure database. A new photograph is taken at your visit; DDS requires a clear image showing your face from the crown of your head to the base of your chin, ear to ear, with no shadows.10Georgia Department of Driver Services. Fees
A standard Georgia driver’s license costs $32 and is valid for eight years. A Georgia ID card is also $32 for eight years.11Georgia Department of Driver Services. After Your Visit
Once everything is processed, you’ll leave with an interim paper license that acts as your valid credential while the permanent card is manufactured.13Georgia Department of Driver Services. Renew a License or ID The permanent card is mailed to your home. DDS advises allowing up to 45 days for delivery. Confirm your mailing address before leaving the office; a wrong address means a lost card and a return trip.
Why the Deadline Matters and What Works Instead
The Department of Homeland Security began enforcing Real ID at TSA checkpoints on May 7, 2025.14Transportation Security Administration. A Real ID isn’t the only credential that gets you through. TSA accepts several other IDs:
- A U.S. passport or passport card
- A U.S. military ID
- A Permanent Resident Card
- A DHS Trusted Traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI)
- A federally recognized tribal photo ID
- A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
If your U.S. passport is current, your non-compliant Georgia license isn’t a problem at the airport. Travelers who show up with no acceptable ID at all can pay a $45 fee through TSA ConfirmID, prepaying online at Pay.gov and presenting the receipt at the checkpoint. TSA then attempts to verify your identity, but there’s no guarantee, and you could still miss your flight.17Transportation Security Administration.
